ou ended your days laughing at his jokes and watching his hysterical interviews for years, now Jay Leno is coming to Belk Theater this May. Leno caught the national spotlight when he was awarded the coveted hosting position on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” replacing the legendary late-night host Johnny Carson.

Leno owns approximately 286 vehicles (169 automobiles and 117 motorcycles), making him quite the collector. They’re housed in three separate warehouses, each the size of a football field His collection includes a sedan and a roadster that were owned by Howard Hughes and one of nine remaining 1963 Chrysler Turbine Jay Leno cars.

Get to know Leno a little better with these fi e fun facts:

He was born James Douglas Muir Leno on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, NY. He is of Scottish and Italian descent.

He was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the Kennedy Center this year, one of the highest accolades for any comedian. No stranger to awards, Leno has won three Emmys and a People’s Choice Award, and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His fifth g ade teacher wrote on a report card, “If Jay spent as much time studying as he does trying to be a comedian, he'd be a big star.”

The title of his 1996 autobiography is “Leading With My Chin.” Leno has a prominent jaw, also described as mandibular prognathism. He knows surgery could fix it but do sn’t want to suffer through the long healing time with his jaw wired shut. The Funx

Behind the Designs for Kinky Boots

design process, one plus one doesn’t equal two, it equals four or fi e.” Barnes concurs, adding that the director did a lot of research on the real shoe factory in Northampton, where Kinky Boots takes place: “I have to tip my hat to Jerry Mitchell – he’s really good about doing his homework.” Mitchell provided Rockwell and Barnes photos and stories, which they incorporated in their designs. For a show as joyous as Kinky Boots, it’s surprising that its primary setting is a factory, but Rockwell wanted to create a realistic world for the storytelling. “I was inspired by the kind of romance of late 18th/19th century factories, and ours is an abstractive collage,” says Rockwell. He created upper windows which are tinted in slight colors, to “create a place that can be very optimistic when it’s back-lit or very atmospheric when it’s saturated in darker colors.” Jerry Mitchell also came up with the idea of using conveyor belts, which are used as part of the workday setting, and turning them into treadmills, which the cast dances on for the raucous fi st act final , “Everybody Say Yeah.” Rockwell says it “took eight or nine months of R&D to get right,” adding that it’s his favorite moment in the show. “It is magical, because it enables Jerry and the cast to take something that you bought into … as a conveyor belt for making shoes, and turning it into this unbelievable production number.” Barnes’ biggest challenge turned out to be those thigh-high boots with six inch stiletto heels. “What’s really funny about our experience with Kinky Boots is that my team, and the cobblers who made the boots, we had the exact same story as in the musical,” explains Barnes. “Everything

n a show called Kinky Boots, “you’ve gotta get the boots right,” says Gregg Barnes, costume and footwear designer for the Tony Award-winning musical. The show, based on a real story and independent film about a ailing English shoe factory that turned its fortunes around by niche-marketing sturdy boots for drag artists, has become a sold-out Broadway phenomenon. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and a Tony-winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots relies heavily on its visual designs, both fabulous and gritty; sets by David Rockwell and costumes by Barnes. Both creators credit Jerry Mitchell, the director and Tony-winning choreographer of the show, for pushing them to come up with creative solutions to difficult asks; in Rockwell’s case, creating a realistic factory setting, which could also become a nightclub in London and a runway in Milan, and in Barnes’ case, making everyday clothing for factory workers, fantastical frocks for drag performers and, of course, those boots. “This is my seventh collaboration with Jerry,” says Rockwell. “We just get together and play and respect each other’s opinions and listen. I try to come back with what he asked for, plus some sort of surprise. I think in a good

the original production,” jokes Barnes. “I don’t know if that’s always true, but you learn so much.” Barnes is taking the opportunity to redesign and improve many of the outfi s. And Rockwell has worked to maintain the real quality of the set while making it lighter. That way it’s easier to assemble, take down and fit in o the six trucks that will accompany the cast and crew on their cross-country journey. Certain elements have changed, but Rockwell says “none of those are things that an audience member looking at New York and looking at the tour will discern.” Both men say they enjoy the enthusiasm audiences have shown for Kinky Boots. “You know, it’s amazing,” says Barnes. “I feel the same way. You can feel it walking into that theater. I think the audience comes so primed to have this joyous experience, and it always rewards that.”

they talk about, in terms of reinforcing the heel and all of that stuff, we had the same learning curve!” And those boots need to be durable to support the 6-foot dancers doing elaborate routines. Says Barnes: “We’re asking them to do slam splits and dancing and quick changes, being carted up and down stairs in baskets. And we have to make them look as if they’re brand new every night, yet survive eight shows a week.” Barnes adds, after lots of experimentation and broken heels, they ultimately came up with designs that are so reliable, they’ve barely had to replace any boots in the musical’s Broadway run of over a year. As for this touring production, Rockwell and Barnes promise it will be very much the same show as on Broadway. “We always say that the tour looks better than

portion of the proceeds from the sale of tickets to tonight’s performance by Audra McDonald will benefit The Choir School at St. Peter’s, an auditioned youth community choir whose mission is to enrich young lives through excellent, rigorous music education and choral performance. For more than 20 years, the school has been a musical home for talented young people who come together from diverse backgrounds to study, rehearse, perform and grow. Originally conceived as a boys’ choir in the classic European tradition, the school has grown to include fi e distinct choirs whose members range in age from 7 to 18. The Town Choirs are training choirs where young boys and girls who enjoy singing begin to develop music and vocal skills. In the Tour Choirs, older students begin to master advanced vocal skills, music theory and performance. The MasterSingers of The Choir School

are a mixed-voice ensemble made up of teenagers from across the region. They perform for a wide variety of audiences and travel each summer to perform in the United States or abroad. In July 2015, they will serve as choir-in-residence at Salisbury Cathedral in Salisbury, England. The Choir School offers a foundation that includes vocal skills, musicianship and language skills, as well as practical skills like teamwork, self-discipline and leadership. GLEN HANSARD

len Hansard is an Academy Awardwinning singer-songwriter, and principal vocalist/guitarist for the bands The Frames and The Swell Season. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Hansard quit school at age 13 to begin “busking” around town. During these early years, he honed his craft on the street during the day and refined it or the stage at bars and pubs at night. At 17, Hansard was signed to Island Records. He also was chosen to play Outspan Foster in the hugely successful Alan Parker film The Commitments. Hansard later gathered some busking friends, christened them The Frames, and recorded their debut, “Another Love Song.” Now charting over 20 years as a band, having released six full-length records and logged countless miles, The Frames have established themselves as a dynamic and powerful live band. The Swell Season was born out of Hansard being asked to write music for a film his friend and ormer band mate Jon Carney was making, originally titled “Busker.” Rechristened Once, the movie

T

tells the story of a guy and girl who meet, fall in love, make a record and go their separate ways. Hansard, along with Marketa Irglova, not only scored the movie, but also starred in the film as “guy” and “girl.” Together in 2008, they won the Academy Award for “Falling Slowly” in the best original song category. Following the success of Once, The Swell Season released a follow up record, "Strict Joy," and has done several worldwide tours. In June 2012, Hansard released his debut release, "Rhythm and Repose," that was more than 20 years in the making. That same month, ONCE the musical, which had debuted on Broadway in March of the same year, won eight Tony Awards, including best new musical. The musical enjoyed a three-year run on Broadway, closing in January 2015. A touring production began in 2014 and is expected to run through 2016 throughout North America and the world. Hansard is currently finishing ork on the follow up to his debut with an expected fall 2015 release date planned.

THE LOST BROTHERS

he Lost Brothers' fourth album, "New Songs of Dawn and Dust," is the start of something new for the Irish duo of Mark McCausland and Oisin Leech. Their previous release, 2012’s “The Passing of the Night,” was the closing chapter in a trilogy of records that started with their debut album “Trails of the Lonely” in 2008. Since forming in Liverpool in 2007, the songwriting duo have collaborated with other artists on each album, so it’s somehow fitting that the and returned to Liverpool to record the fi st of a new trilogy with Bill Ryder-Jones – solo artist and former guitarist of local heroes The Coral – at the production helm. October 2012 saw The Lost Brothers complete an extensive U.S. tour with Glen Hansard and in March 2013 they played the legendary Midnight Ramble at the Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, followed by the Midnight Ramble Concert

For Levon in Texas. The band's musical influen es range from Chuck Berry to Harry Nilsson to Beck; from Ennio Morricone to Jack Nitzsche; from Sweeney’s Men to Van Morrison; from Bob Dylan to Lou Reed and Nick Cave. “This new album steps away from the strictly folk/americana thing and opens up a new door for us,” says Oisin. 17F

Spot the Differences

B

ack by popular demand, the Olivier Award nominated Potted Potter – The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff is written and performed by former BBC hosts Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner. The play takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing, or “potting,” all seven Harry Potter books into 70 madcap minutes, aided only by multiple costume changes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic. The show also invites audiences to engage with a real life game of Quidditch, but according to Clarkson and Turner’s unique set of rules. Whether you camped outside a bookstore for three days awaiting the release of the "Deathly Hallows" or you don’t know the difference between a horcrux and a Hufflepuf , the comedy, magic and mayhem of Potted Potter makes for an entertaining and hilarious visit to the theater. The fast-paced show, which has made audiences ages 6 to Dumbledore (who is very old indeed) roar with laughter all over the world, is perfect for the entire family! Think you know every detail about Harry Potter? Maybe you will be able to spot the differences in this fun picture challenge

above. See if you can identify the four things that are different in these two photos. Don’t miss this hilarious show when it comes to McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square April 14-19.

ANSWERS: 1: Missing wand. 2: Missing shirt collar of guy on right, 3:Extra letters in "Spooky," 4: Spider is on the left of the coffin in tead of right.
