SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES NEW CLASSICS SEASON Maria Canals. Long absent from Classics concerts, instrumental music by J.S. Bach will be performed on two programs this season: the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in November and the Orchestral Suite No. 1 in April. Classics 8 celebrates the music of Tchaikovsky as part of a month-long Tchaikovsky Festival, presented in collaboration with Opera Carolina and the North Carolina Dance Theatre. In addition to the Classics concerts, festival performances throughout the month of March include Opera Carolina’s production of Eugene Onegin, ballet with NCDT, and a special KnightSounds series concert by the Charlotte Symphony. “When I moved to Charlotte, it was a treat to discover the presence of the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Opera Carolina in the city,” says Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. “I saw the opportunity for the Symphony to collaborate with both of these wonderful arts organizations to showcase the talent of Charlotte. The Tchaikovsky Festival in March 2012 promises to be an exciting partnership." The 2011-2012 season comes to a magnificent conclusion in May with Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, performed with the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. In addition to the Symphony’s 80th year, this season also marks the 60th anniversary of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. Missa Solemnis is one of Beethoven’s greatest achievements, contemporaneous with his famous Symphony No. 9.

A NOTE ON THE TEXT Most of the poems comprising Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats (1939) have been set to music complete and in their originally published form; a few have been subject to a minor revision of tense or pronoun, and eight lines have been added to “The Song of the Jellicles.” However, some of our lyrics, notably the story of “Grizabella,” were discovered among the unpublished writings of Eliot. The prologue is based on ideas and incorporates lines from another unpublished poem, entitled “Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats.” “Memory” includes lines from and is suggested by “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” and other poems of the Prufrock period. All other words in the show are taken from The Collected Poems. 13B

SUMMER DANCE

N

orth Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance is once again offering a summer full of dance camps, classes and workshops. Summer offerings range from fairytale dance camps for young children, to intensive dance training for the more advanced student. “The summer is a great time for new students to join the School of Dance,” said School Principal Ayisha McMillan. “Dance classes are an ideal way to stay active during the summer break.” For young students ages 3 to 6, the School offers week long fairytale dance camps including Cinderella and the Prince, The Nutcracker Suite, and the Little Mermaid. Students explore the enchanting fairytales through movement, dramatic play, dress-up and crafts, and each camp culminates with students presenting a grand finale performance. A variety of classes are offered for children ages 3 to 13 during the summer including Creative Movement, Ballet, Jazz, Musical Theatre Dance and Modern. Students ages 9 to

13 planning to audition for the NC Dance Theatre Summer Intensive Program in the future are encouraged to join the Summer Intensive Preparatory Workshop. The Workshop prepares students for the more rigorous Summer Intensive Program by focusing on developing solid technique in classical ballet, modern and jazz. Special attention is given to pointe work for female dancers and to strength, jumps and turns for the male dancers. The School’s Open Division classes are for ages 14 and up, with a focus on adult students. “The Open Division classes are ideal for beginners as well as former dancers,” said Open Division instructor Gretchen Jax. “The classes offer an artistic outlet, while also helping students achieve a healthy lifestyle.” Summer classes are currently enrolling and will go from June 27 to July 30, 2011. “We hope students use the summer to explore new dance classes, improve their technique and have fun,” said McMillan.
