Matt Cain begins his fourth year with the PC football program and the second as the quarterbacks coach after having spent the previous three seasons as an offensive graduate assistant at Vanderbilt under his father, offensive coordinator Ted Cain. In his first year under the direction of Cain, the wide receivers led the Big South Conference in several statistical categories. In total receiving, the Blue Hose tallied 3,191 total yards to lead the conference. Seven student-athletes caught touchdowns on the year, totaling 17, which was also first in the conference. In total receptions, senior receiver Brandon Clark led the squad with 62 catches (second in the Big South) while senior Terrence Butler also finished in the top 10 in Big South statistics at 49 (sixth). On the year, at least five different wide receivers had receptions in 10 of the 12 competitions. During his time with Vanderbilt, Cain worked with current National Football League quarterback Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears while he was the signal caller for the Commodores. He also helped in the development of Vanderbilt wide receiver Earl Bennett, who earned all-SEC and All-America honors. Cain is a graduate of Furman University where he was a reserve quarterback behind Tennessee Titans’ reserve quarterback and former Paladin great Ingle Martin. He was a part of three NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff teams at Furman (2001, 2002 and 2004). A walk-on with the Paladins, Cain earned a scholarship for his senior season. He was a two-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll recipient. Cain graduated from Furman in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in geology. He also earned his master’s in secondary education from Vanderbilt’s prestigious Peabody College.
