The Salabarria family created Oaks Senior Living in 1998 to provide person-centered care to elders who can no longer live safely at home. The family operated executive team has been faithfully providing senior living in Georgia and South Carolina. Oaks at West Cobb, an Oaks Senior Living managed community, embodies the values set in place to create the best home for your loved one. Located in Marietta, GA and only a short drive from Atlanta, Oaks at West Cobb features luxury assisted living and memory care apartments with various care service options tailored to fit your needs.

The Thriving Day in the Life of an Oaks at West Cobb Memory Care Resident

At Oaks at West Cobb, each resident’s community experience is tailored to their individual needs and desires. The flow of one resident’s day may not be the same as another, being individual care needs vary per resident. Take a few moments to join the journey of a typical day in the life of an Oaks at West Cobb memory care resident.

Many of our residents begin their day with a freshly prepared meal by our Executive Chef and dining team, with the option of having specialized meals or alternate dining choices depending on dietary need. Meals continue to be prepared for lunch and dinner; however, residents have the option to eat at any point during the day as they would in their own home due to our all-day dining service. These meals are wonderful opportunities for our residents to enjoy time with their neighbors.

After enjoying breakfast, residents have the option to get active with some yoga or chair exercises lead by our creative lifestyle directors. In addition to exercise-based activities, our lifestyle directors incorporate activities into daily routines that honor the resident’s history, personal preferences, and abilities to enable the highest quality of life possible. Our daily activities create freedom of choice for residents, so each day has new possibilities!

While dining and activities are fundamental parts of the Oaks Senior Living mission, person-centered care is our main priority. Each day, the resident is always the focus. Our management team works together to provide the exact care plan that you need to create the most abundant life possible. Residents will have 24-hour access to care partners with care services optimized by our professional nursing team. Our nursing team has been specifically trained in person-centered memory care so that compassionate, dignified, and professional care can be provided to all memory care residents. Partnering with EmpowerMe Wellness, residents can receive onsite physical therapy and have access to diagnostics for non-blood products creating quick turnaround times of results and treatments. This relationship starts upon the resident moving in, and if there is no immediate need for therapeutic treatment, EmpowerMe Wellness will continue to collaborate with our team to ensure that treatment will be available if it is needed.

“Living here has been a pleasure. The staff and residents are very friendly, the community is beautiful, and it just feels good calling this place home.” ~ Oaks at West Cobb Resident

Come be a part of our family!

Each part of a resident’s day is created to honor the life, desires, and needs of the resident all while providing a sense of purpose. Come take look and see everything that is available for you and your loved one at Oaks at West Cobb.

A Dynasty at the Battery?

When one talks about a “dynasty” in professional sports or bigtime college athletics it’s obviously meant for the elite of the elite. The incredible run with Tom Brady and the Patriots as well as Joe Montana and the 49ers come to mind. As for college, certainly the University of Georgia has trended towards that description after years of Alabama showing such dominance. Many would describe the Lakers and Celtics of the 1980’s and Michael Jordan and the Bulls of the 90’s on the hardwoods as just that. With seemingly more parity in baseball and the way the sport is structured it’s harder to pick out examples to that extreme but of course the Yankees and their 27 World Championships as a whole seem to at least have some cache above the rest.

Let’s dive into our hometown Atlanta Braves and take a look at what we are currently in the midst of. I think it’s fair to say that what Alex Anthopoulos has built is the current gold standard in Major League Baseball. And with another World Championship or two dare I say there is the potential for that d word?

The Bravos, here in 2023, just won their sixth straight division title. Certainly, that pales in comparison to the 14 straight of the 1990’s and early 2000’s but something special is brewing down at the Battery. As well chronicled here in OTM, Brian Snitker’s club won the 2021 World Series which already equaled the number of Championships from that previous run. And there just appears to be no let up as Anthopoulos has been a miracle worker tying up the core of this franchise to very team friendly contracts.

The superstar corner infielders in Austin Riley and Matt Olson are already under contract to be Braves through 2029 (Olson) and 2032 (Riley). Second baseman and fan favorite Ozzie Albies is signed through 2026, as is shortstop Orlando Arcia. Catcher Sean Murphy, who came in with a bang in this, his first season in Atlanta, should be here through 2028.

The outfield appears to be just as healthy. Ronald Acuna, Jr., also known as quite possibly the best player in the game today, is signed through 2027 and his running mate in center-field, Michael Harris II, is tied up through 2031.

Pitching is obviously of ultra importance in the game today and right on cue one of the best in the business in Spencer Strider is locked up until the year 2029. Add in closer, Raisel Iglesias, who is expected to call Atlanta home through 2025, and you can see how well off this team and franchise as a whole appears to be.

One name not mentioned above is star pitcher Max Fried whose contract runs out after this 2023 season. Certainly, many suitors will line up for the left-hander as he is that good and the Bravos may lose him in free agency as they did with Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson. But, with or without Fried, the nucleus is going to be here for years to come and all in all this franchise is as locked and loaded as any in the game today. A little luck is always needed in winning it all but if the chips fall as they could (meaning a few more parade’s down Peachtree) we may not only continue to be considered the game’s “gold standard” but an eventual outright dynasty!

“My Mom has been living at Holbrook since November and we are thrilled with everything about this amazing, family-owned company. Especially because my Mom has improved so much, in so many different ways, since she moved in. They do so many "little" things to make my Mom and my family feel special. I live in Philadelphia and came down to see my Mom for 4 days and stayed at one of the apartments on site. It was wonderful! I can't recommend Holbrook more highly. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.”

The Law Firm of Diaz & Gaeta is a fully bilingual firm where everyone is welcomed. As activists and sons of immigrants, Giovanni and Zach built their law firm with the goal to serve the community and treat each other like family, with honesty, respect and equality.

OTM caught up with the pair and learned all about this growing and flourishing practice, located near Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta.

OTM: Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Tell us a little bit about the history of your firm and what you specialize in.

GD: Well, we started on our own in a tiny office in 2014 at Windy Hill.

Fast forward, the practice has grown tremendously, and the firm now has 25 team members, including five attorneys and employees who have been part of the team for six to seven years. We help clients with Personal Injury, Immigration, Criminal Defense, and the LGBTQ+ community.

We have developed a reputation for winning complex cases by helping wrongfully deported clients. Attorney Gaeta has helped clients recover over one million dollars in car accident settlements, helped reunite families (Mother and son reunited after six years that the Father took the child away from the mother), won wrongful DUI cases, and dismissed street race cases for lack of evidence.

We built this law firm to serve the community and treat each client like family. Our motivation was never to become rich attorneys but to help to advocate for the community. The Partners truly advocate for clients because they believe in their causes. In our decade of litigating, we’ve accumulated more court experience than other attorneys who have been in practice for more than 30 years.

OTM: There definitely is a grass roots feel to you both and the practice as a whole. It’s tough to get that with the super big law firms. You really do seem extremely community oriented and active for the people.

GD: Yes, for sure. We are very active in the community, always sponsoring organizations that help kids with education and sports. In fact, we are always looking for opportunities to serve. Our attorneys are open to participating with non-profit and community organizations to help inform the public on various subjects related to immigration, personal injury and criminal law.

Our main mission is to never create a barrier between clients and attorneys. Even though we are a relatively successful firm we’re constantly in contact with our clients about their cases on a regular basis. We want to remain grass roots talking to clients and representing them in court. We are passionate about helping others and I think it shows in our many 5-star testimonials!

OTM: You have already expanded multiple times over from that first day back in 2014. What is the goal for the future?

GD: We want to copy our model and multiply our formula, hire more attorneys and employees to continue to provide great service to Cobb County and the Georgia community.

Both of us will always believe that everyone deserves exceptional legal representation at reasonable prices, and for that reason, we always offer a free initial consultation which will be directly with the attorney.

The bottom line is that we are committed to each case and each client’s needs. As you can read on our website, we have a reputation for making the unthinkable happen. Our firm has taken and won cases that had been turned down by other attorneys. We always find a way to bring justice to our client’s cases!

OTM: Thanks to both Zach and Giovanni for the time.

AGE IN PLACE

At Varenita, residents can “age in place” comfortably and securely. One of the main benefits of choosing Varenita of West Cobb is that residents can stay in the same community and, in many cases, the same “living area” even as their health care requirements change. This means that once you or your loved one moves into our beautiful community, it’s home. No matter how much needs to change over time.

ASSISTED LIVING

The perfect option for independent seniors who want support with daily tasks and personal care.

Varenita of West Cobb’s personalized assisted living care is designed for primarily independent seniors looking for a rich and rewarding lifestyle with an enhanced level of support. Guided by compassion and clinical expertise, our highly trained team members offer residents the gentle, individually focused support they need to flourish while retaining their independence.

Personalized Care for All Stages of Aging

ASSISTED PLUS

This specialized program is ideal for those living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early memory loss. Our industry-leading transitional care program is built around an inclusive “open campus” model. It is specifically designed for residents experiencing the early symptoms of memory loss or MCI but may not require the full attention or secure environment of a traditional memory program. Residents who are appropriate for transitional care continue to reside in the Assisted Living area of the community while receiving additional support with daily activities.

MEMORY CARE

An enriching and supportive program designed for those living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.

Based on the latest research, Varenita’s memory care program offers a truly compassionate approach to care designed for those residents living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. This living option combines an engaging, secure memory care neighborhood with a stimulating, person-centered lifestyle often missing from other cognitive care programs.

ON-SITE THERAPY SERVICES

Unlike many other senior living communities, Varenita offers comprehensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy services for all our residents without the hassel of having to leave the community.

FIVE-STAR RESTAURANT-STYLE DINING

Varenita offers residents and their families an impressive mix of delicious cuisine and rich dining experiences. Our accomplished chef and culinary team create an ever-changing menu of delicious entrees made with organic, locally sourced ingredients across three beautiful dining venues. These include vegetarian, gluten-free, and specially designed dishes for residents with specific dietary needs. In addition, we have a registered dietitian available to help with residents’ nutritional needs.

CHECK YOUR PASSPORTS!

f you have travel coming up in the next nine months, this is your friendly reminder that now is the time to check your passports.

There is no worse feeling than realizing your passport needs to be renewed at the last minute - and I speak from personal experience. I recently realized I didn’t have enough blank pages left in mine for my upcoming travel this fall and had to get a same-day passport. It was an incredibly stressful experience, so here’s how to ensure you don’t find yourself in the same situation.

Before you book your next vacation, you want to make sure that your passport is going to be valid for travel and if not, that you have enough time to get either a new passport or a renewal. Generally speaking, passports need to be valid for at least six months from the date you will reenter the United States and you need to have at least two blank back-to-back Visa pages in your passport per country you are visiting. The blank pages are incredibly important because you will be denied entry to countries you are visiting without enough blank pages.

It’s also important to note that even if the country you are traveling to requires less than six months of passport validity, the airline that you are flying on will often have a sixmonth requirement and they will deny you boarding without six months remaining on your passport.

Clients often ask me why there is a requirement to have six months remaining on your passport, which is a great question. Countries want you to have at least six months validity to make sure your passport won’t expire while you are in travel if you have something happen that delays your return to the United States. Common delays include medical emergencies and natural disasters. You won’t be allowed to reenter the United States with an expired passport, and the simplest way to avoid this is to have ample time remaining on your passport when you travel. It is also important to note that passports for ages 16 and up are valid for ten years and passports for children ages 15 and under are valid for only five years. I often have clients who are ready to book a vacation only to realize that their child’s passport is expired because they weren’t aware of the difference in the length of validity for children over and under 16 years old.

If your passport has expired, doesn’t have enough time remaining on it to take your vacation, you don’t have enough blank pages, or if you don’t yet have a passport, you will need to apply for a new or renewed passport. Passport processing times are still incredibly long – regular passport processing is taking up to 13 weeks and expedited processing is taking up to 9 weeks. In-person appointments for same day processing are incredibly difficult to get even if you have a life-or-death emergency so you need to plan for long processing times.

I highly recommend choosing expedited processing for all passport applications. You will also want to pay extra for expedited shipping of your completed passport. By choosing this option you can possibly reduce the time it takes to receive your passport by several weeks.

There’s nothing worse than the feeling of having your vacation booked only to realize that your passport isn’t valid - so go check yours now!

umpkin season is in full swing and if you’re a fan of pumpkin flavored treats but are looking for something

Fall Recipes

This recipe which will surely become one of your fall favorites! These festive little Pumpkin Pie Energy

Bites are the perfect thing to pop in your mouth when you need a hit of energy and fl avor. They also happen to be good for you with a variety of ingredients that provide healthy omega-3 fat, fiber, protein and plenty of vitamins including A, B and C. Even better, they’re super easy throw together.

Pumpkin Pie Energy Bites

1. Combine the following in a food processor or bowl of a stand mixer:

Here’s how…

- 1/2 cup almond butter

- 1/2 cup almond flour

- 1/3 cup canned pumpkin

- 2 Tbsp. Maple syrup

- 2 Tbsp. flax meal

- 1/4 cup pecans

- 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

- 2 Tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut

2. Pulse or mix until thoroughly combined. Roll into 1 inch balls (should make about 20) and place on a baking sheet or plate lined with parchment or foil. Chill for 20 minutes.

- 1 tsp cinnamon

3. Place an additional 2-3 Tbsp. Shredded coconut in a shallow bowl and roll each pumpkin bite to coat. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Pumpkin Spice Muffins

These muffins are on regular rotation in our house in the fall/winter season! One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it only uses one big bowl, so clean up is a breeze!

INGREDIENTS

- 1 3/4 cups whole wheat pastry flour

- 1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice

- 1/2 tsp cinnamon

- 1/4 tsp baking powder

- 1 tsp baking soda

- 2 eggs (lightly beaten)

- 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup

- 1/4 cup melted butter

- 1 1/4 cups pumpkin puree

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degree. Line a muffin pan with liners or coat with butter, avocado oil or coconut oil spray.

3. Add wet ingredients and stir until combined.

2. Whisk dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center.

4. Distribute batter into muffin pan and bake for 20 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Makes 12 regular muffins or 24 mini muffins.

Emotional Wellness

October is Emotional Wellness month and for a good reason. The seasons are changing, and holidays are around the corner. It is key to prioritize our emotional well-being during these times of increased stress and busyness. We have talked in past articles about our physical health, which we all know is so important, but somehow our mental health gets pushed aside. Mental and emotional stress can translate into physical symptoms. Every single person has something going on in their lives, every day we feel emotions, whether good or bad, and stress is inevitable. During this month, let us explore various activities aimed at enhancing emotional health, reducing stress, and fostering resilience.

Some reading this may be thinking, I don’t know where to start. That’s ok! Being in the present moment takes practice, especially with all the constant distractions. One way to practice being present is to check in with the five senses; this awareness can bring you into the present moment. A good place to start is to plan a time each day to stop and close your eyes and pay attention to your thoughts and the sensations you feel in your body. What are you doing in that moment: washing dishes, playing a game with little ones? Where is your attention in that moment? Are you fully present in that moment or are you replaying something that happened at work or an argument you had earlier in the day? Take a moment to write these thoughts and feelings down. Do this in a non-judg-

mental way and change can occur. Self-criticism can hinder progress. Understand that everyone has moments where their minds wander, or they feel stressed, this is human nature.

Regulating these emotions that you may be feeling during that check in is also part of emotional wellness. Learning to sit with the distress you may be feeling and self-soothing in a healthy way is important. We can best regulate these emotions when we use healthy coping in our daily living. Healthy coping looks like; taking time for yourself, meditation, a walk or walking meditation, journaling, eating well, drinking water, and taking time away from electronics. Notice automatic thoughts that occur that add to distress. When we notice these thoughts, write them down and reframe them.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Automatic thought: Everything happening is bad. Reframe: That was a challenging situation, and I am in control of how I respond.

Automatic thought: Everything is out of control.

Reframe: I can control what I consume. Consume means things such as food, drink, interactions, TV shows, etc.

Some resources used in this article and recommended for those seeking personal growth and self-awareness are; How to Meet Your Self the Workbook for Self-Discovery by Dr. Nicole Lepera and Self Observation: The Awakening of Conscience: An Owner’s Manual by Red Hawk.

Take this month to focus on self-care, practice mindfulness, seek support if needed and raise awareness about the importance of emotional wellness. Remember, taking care of your mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s a proactive step toward living a fulfilling and balanced life.

Here are some great things to do in the Fall to improve your Yard!

Ijust love the look of a pristine front and back yard, so you might be thankful that fall is finally here. After the scorching summer, the fall weather is a welcome relief, especially for your lawn. You will no longer have to battle with brown heat spots in your grass but there are other areas of maintenance to consider.

You might have thought your lawn care days are slowly over as summer is ending, but there are some things to complete this fall to ensure a healthy lawn throughout the colder months. Taking steps like this will set your lawn up for being healthy during the dormant winter months and on into the spring growing season.

AERATE THE SOIL

The Fall season is your opportunity to prepare your lawn before it gets too cold. The first thing you should do to prepare your lawn for fall is aerate the soil. Aeration basically means letting the soil breathe, because over time soil gets compacted and hard, which has a negative impact on the overall health of your lawn. Compacted soil stops or slows down the moisture and nutrients from properly sinking into the soil. There are many ways to aerate your soil, one of the most common ways is done through poking holes directly into your lawn with a spading fork. Talk to your local nursery about the best way that will work for you based on the type of lawn you have. Or do an online search to get a better idea aerating ideas.

OVERSEEDING

Overseeding works perfectly with aerating your lawn, be sure to follow through with this step to ensure you’re maximizing the health of your lawn. Yes, aerating is great, but without overseeding, you’re only doing part the job. Overseeding is essentially evenly spreading grass seed across the yard which can help to fill in gaps and build a thicker, more resilient turf. Doing it in the fall takes advantage of the cooler temperatures, giving those seeds the perfect environment to grow. It will also help to support the health of your lawn through the colder months and ensure a lush thick lawn when spring arrives. To effectively overseed, mow your lawn as low as you can, then aerate, then use a spreader to evenly distribute the grass seed. Remember to water lightly and regularly until the new grass establishes.

FERTILIZE

During the hot summer experts generally advise against using fertilizer, especially when dealing with damaged, or browning and yellowing grass which is one of the biggest summer lawn mistakes so now in the fall is the time to use it. The lawn needs essential nutrients to prepare for the cold winter and will grow back strong in the spring. Keep in mind that if your weather is still particularly hot, then avoid using chemical fertilizers as this could damage your lawn. Check with the local nursery about using chemical fertilizers. It’s also not a bad idea to use a slow-release granular fertilizer with high levels of phosphorus for root growth 4-6 weeks before your location’s first frost date. This will ensure your lawn is fighting fit to deal with the cold harsh winter.

MULCH

It’s a great idea to add mulch to flower beds and around trees to help retain moisture which enriches the soil and prevents weeds. The mulch creates a nice contrast to the overall look of your house and yard. The mulch can also act as a protective layer against the cold in the winter months. Mulch provides extra nutrients to your lawn to grow thick and healthy. The decomposing substance releases nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus which is vital for your lawn’s growth. Remember to be responsive to your individual conditions and lawn needs. If the sun is still blazing throughout September, hold off for a little longer. Every lawn is different, conditions like your local climate and soil type can influence the best practices for your specific situation.

These guidelines offer a basis for what you should be thinking about in terms of lawn care going into fall. Just think of how rewarding it is to have your lawn POP in March when Spring is in the air. I think you might get “YARD OF THE MONTH” Plus if you are thinking of selling, then your curb appeal will be already in place.
