THE BLUE

OUT OF A pop singer with serious soul, Bluey Robinson is a rising star in the music world. Born in Sweden and raised in London, the 23 year-old is a captivating, charismatic debut act whose song writing encapsulates a throwback feel with a futuristic twist. With over 6 million views on his YouTube channel and over 10,000 downloads in the first 24 hours of his free LP ‘The Late Shift’, the reception of Bluey’s music has been incredible. Having collaborated with Labrinth and toured with the likes of Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys, D’Angelo, Trey Songz and recently just completing his own sell-out headline tour in the UK, Bluey is someone to keep your eyes and ears on. An incredible young talent whose songwriting influences range from old classics such as The Jackson 5 and Otis Redding to more modern propositions like Cee-Lo Green and Bruno Mars. In his youth, Bluey explored his acting and theatrical talents, landing the lead role of Simba in the West End production of The Lion King. This led to further roles alongside Jessie J in Whistle Down The Wind. He also briefly featured in the hit UK TV show Eastenders as Billy Jackson. Currently Bluey has just renewed his contract at MTV for another year, presenting the biggest tabloid news stories of the day, interviewing stars from the world of music and entertainment and reporting on lifestyle and fashion events.

% 4

Do you find it hard to balance your social life and work?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Who has been your favourite interviewee so far?

Somewhere comfortable, still doing music and being happy.

Will and Jaden Smith. Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman were cool too. Ah, Mila.

No, not really. They usually seem to intertwine.

Can you give us a run down of your normal day? Sure, if it's an MTV week, I'd usually get up around 9.30am. Put on Guns n Roses 'Welcome 2 The Jungle' and listen to that while I'm getting ready. Head off to MTV for a few hours. Film the news bulletins for the day with my team then head back home to move my car so I don't get a parking ticket. I then usually either record/write music at home or go to the studio where I'll spend the next 8 or 9 hours. Get home around 12am. Catch some jokes with whichever friends are in my house, eat something, watch something, then sleep and repeat.

Where do you hang out with your friends? Usually just at mine. People tend to treat our house like a college common room.

Best hidden Gem in London, be it a restaurant, bar, club, shop, etc Wellington Club is cool.

What is your career highlight? Opening the main stage for Jay-Z at Wireless Festival or going on a European tour as support act for Justin Bieber. Both were severely surreal and dope.

Who would you like to do a collaboration with? Pharrell Williams

Who inspires you? Hard-workers. People who believe in themselves no matter what and have the goods to back it up. Muhammed Ali, Bruce Lee, Kanye.

Who is your celebrity crush? Zoe Kravitz is cute. Literally just looked at the tv screen and she was on.

How did you get your job at MTV? Got called in for an interview. Wasn't really sure what it was for but went along, intrigued. They told me all about the position and how they wanted to bring a new element to their brand and audience. Sounded interesting but I had never considered being a presenter before. They asked if I'd do a quick screen test either way, so thought I'd give it a go. A few weeks later I was in front of a camera every other week reading news bulletins, wondering what had just happened. I'm still doing that.

Tell us the funniest interviews you’ve had at MTV? I went and interviewed Will and Jaden Smith for their movie 'After Earth.' Was funny because I had already met them on the Bieber tour a year before and knew them a fair amount. I literally walked in and they went "Heyyy, Bluey, what are you doing here!?"

Who would be your ultimate celebrity to interview? Andre 3000

Why do you like wearing streetwear? It's just how I've grown up. I'm a London kid. Streetwear is usually casual, comfortable and generally looks dope!

What is your favourite thing to wear? Either a beanie, vest or some baggy Harem pants.

What is your favourite Mossimo piece from the collection? I like the vests. That will be me this Summer.

How does it feel to be the face of a fashion brand? Strange, exciting, kinda' nerve-wracking.

Why did you choose Mossimo? It was a mutual thing I guess, they seemed to like what I did etc. and their stuff is dope and fits with who I am.

What was your highlight of the shoot? I liked riding the penny skateboard although we didn't end up using it. Also the people were real cool.

East Coast Attitude Meets West Coast STYLE

From Bowie to Blondie, The Strokes to SBTRKT - fashion is important in music. The best artists have always been the ones who look effortlessly cool, say the right things in interviews and of course, write life-changing songs. It's a package deal in a way and as a music journalist I'm always looking for the band who has the complete picture. While that's undoubtedly a rare thing to find, when you do stumble across it, it's ten times more exciting. My job at NME is to check out all the new bands who are coming through – the kind of acts who are so new they might not have released anything yet and probably won't have signed a record deal or even got a manager. It's fascinating to watch a band like that take shape, from playing their first ever gig to going on to get an NME cover – and even more fascinating when you find someone who makes a big splash worldwide. In recent years we've seen the likes of Haim, Odd Future, Palma Violets, Grimes, Merchandise, St. Vincent and Parquet Courts all break through with the right aesthetic. None of them sound remotely alike, but they all have a shared vision when it comes to how they are perceived in public: they aren't sell outs, they take the way they look and what they say seriously, they work tirelessly to get their point across and they want to be huge – and all for the right reasons. The Best New Band category at the 2014 NME Awards with Austin, Texas is presented by Mossimo and aims to crown the next of these hopefuls. We've got a shortlist of six of the most exciting new acts in the world all vying for the title, which in the past has been won by everyone from Arctic Monkeys and Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Oasis, The Smiths and The Specials. A great thing about our Awards is that everything is voted for by the public – there's no shady panel of judges choosing the winners, just a webpage and a load of bands to pick from (even the shortlist is generated by a public vote). So the Awards really are an indication of who matters in music right now and what our readers are listening to. This year, the acts nominated are as wide-ranging as ever and I think it's too close to call in terms of who the overall winner will be. You can find out for yourself on February 26, when the Awards take place at O2 Academy Brixton and are streamed online at NME.COM. First up in the nominations are Drenge, the two-piece Derby band made up of the bestnamed brothers in rock, Eoin and Rory Loveless. If you haven't heard their blistering self-titled debut album then you're missing out - it recalls The White Stripes most rocking moments, but also has the melodic charm that saw acts like Ash do so well in the ‘90s. Drenge are also playing live on the night at the Awards ceremony, so will no doubt be in the mood to win. Birmingham four-piece Swim Deep also get a nomination, which is no surprise – their debut album 'Where The Heaven Are We' gatecrashed the UK albums chart Top 20 last August.

% 14

Coming from the same scene as best mates Peace, they're one of the UK's most exciting new bands and in frontman Austin Williams they have a genuine indie hero in waiting. Next up are Chvrches: perhaps the most well-known of all the nominees judging by the huge crowds they played to at festivals last summer. What's more, the Glasgow trio are also doing us Brits proud abroad - having had considerable success across the pond in America. Their debut album, 'The Bones Of What You Believe' entered the UK charts at Number Nine in September and was one of the year’s most critically acclaimed. I think that part of what makes them so great is the individual bandmembers' personalities – frontwoman Lauren Mayberry is easily the coolest singer Scotland has produced since Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and Iain Cook and Martin Doherty give Chvrches an air of Pet Shop Boys-esque pop genius. Perhaps the polar opposite to Lauren & co are Jagwar Ma – apparently Noel Gallagher's favourite new band. The Australian two-piece first came to my attention a couple of years ago with their brilliant demo track 'Come Save Me'. It was an instant classic and sounded like a long-lost Phil Spector track. But it didn't really give away the whole picture of what Jagwar Ma were really about. Here was a band obsessed with recapturing the sound, aesthetic and feel of acid house, who on their debut album 'Howlin'' incorporated a dizzy mix of Andrew Weatherall, early ‘90s Primal Scream and day-glo imagery. Their live shows are a blast too and drenched in trippy visuals. Maybe that's why, when they played at Glastonbury, a who's who of rock'n'roll royalty turned out to watch them? That should be proof enough of why they're fully worth your time too... Closer to home are Camden-based Wolf Alice, led by perhaps the UK's greatest frontwoman in waiting, Ellie Roswell. Previously a folk singer until she teamed up with the rest of the band to make more of an indie racket, Ellie's got more charisma than most and even though Wolf Alice haven't even released an album yet – they only signed their record deal in January – they have one of the strongest fan bases in the UK. Expect big things of them in the near future. Finally, but by no means least, we have Courtney Barnett – another Aussie who's making amazing music but this time from a more DIY perspective. Her brilliant song 'Avant Gardener' made it to NME's Tracks Of The Year in 2013 and is surely going to be a future classic – five minutes of three-chord, groove-laden rock'n'roll with the sharpest, funniest lyrics in ages. She's a lo-fi hero who'll appeal to anyone who ever fell for the charms of Evan Dando, Elliot Smith and their slacker-singer-songwriter ilk. All in all, it's a fine bunch – and one we're proud to be shouting about. Check out who wins on February 26! Matt Wilkinson, NME

What advice would you give to anyone entering the art world & setting up their own screen printing business like you did? Stay realistic! It’s only art at the end of the day, it's not gonna change the world, if you wanna do that become a politician. Don’t fall into the trap of creating ‘big-brand ashing’ subversive art for ‘armchair activists’. Would you agree that Street art/graffiti art has become almost acceptable now due to its popularity, Is it right to see street art in a gallery space? I’ve gotta admit, I struggle to define the parameters of ‘street art’, is it art made using ‘street’ techniques (ie: stencil, spray paint, wheat paste), or does ‘street’ denote the attitude

% 34

and tone of the work. I dunno – the Hackney Riots spawned thousands of viral images on the internet, kids with mediocre Photoshop skills and a sense of humour; if any one of these images had gone through an analogue process (ie: screenprinting) would that be deemed as ‘street art’? Does it belong in a gallery? If the public want to see it – why not? Should a polar bear be in the zoo? Maybe not, but plenty of people pay good money to see him pacing up and down. If you are a purist then take your chances at the North Pole. Lots of people accuse Banksy & Sheperd Fairey of 'selling out'. When does success outweigh artist integrity? Then I guess ‘lots of people’ are jealous and bitter. I don’t think that Banksy or Sheperd Fairey lose any sleep about it. Their ‘success’ has afforded them amazing opportunities and allowed them to meet and work with some inspiring people. Art isn’t a service industry, where we should slave to the consumer requirements and live up to their stereo-typical expectations of struggling artists living and working in cold, cramped studios, drinking Absinthe to stay warm. Finally, describe your creative space for us. What gets those creative juices flowing? Sitting around cold, cramped studios drinking Absinthe!

Spring/Summer 2014

What artists inspire you today? I tend to work in a bit of a vacuum – and not allow myself to follow or be influenced by any contemporaries, otherwise you‘re always chasing something or being inadvertently influenced by a thing that you’ve seen before. Saying that, I run a screenprinting studio and can’t help getting inspired by the many artists that come through our doors and use the service, when I’m problem solving for a client – little offshoot ideas are often generated, techniques that I can then use with my own work, so I guess recently I’ve been inspired by Pablo Delgado, Sweet Toof, Eelus and Mysterious Al.

How violently competitive do you and Noel Fielding get about your Buzzcocks outfits? I'm only trying to impress Noel. How did your recent show, Nonsense Overdrive go? Very well. Surprisingly good considering the "material" was a bit bonkers. Though it had a couple normal bits. Have you considered a career change to, say, a rodeo clown? Been there and done it. Well… Youth streetwear vs. braces, striped red polo-necks. discuss. You are always out of date with braces and therefore you are always/never caught out/looking good. Should we be working neckerchiefs into our upcoming collections? No. That's my thing. I have a cold neck. You’ve made references to your previous dance career & seem upset about no longer pursuing dance. Yet curiously

there is no evidence documenting this pre-Viking phase. Can you explain this lost period of your life? The government covered up my time as a dancer. Night Dancerwas too dangerous. Society wasn't ready for it. Canadians seem quite hardcore fans of the Winter Olympics; what would be your chosen sport if you were to participate? I am a citizen of Earth so I'd definitely do Luge. Fellow Canadian Justin Bieber is having a tough time at the moment. what would be your advice to him at this time? I don't know who that is. Who do you think is to blame for all the recent flooding? Humans. Corporations MAN!!!! Your Indian/African elephant in a bar joke seems to change from show to show; is this intentional or do you frequently improvise (or forget!) your material? Oh they all change until I get a final version that I’m happy with. But yes. They always change a bit. A painting is never finished yo. How long have you been growing your beard? Always. Always have to shave the bloody thing.

danish Giraffes or Scottish Pandas? Labels are so limiting. You’re very good at replying to people on Twitter; is this just to support the constant monotonous cycle of self-publicity or do you enjoy talking to your fans? It feels rude not to say thank you to someone who's been kind. Plus I attract a nice bunch. I'm very lucky. What’s happening next for you? Going to write another new show between now and August. So there will be lots of experimenting and thus quite a few shambolic preview shows. Plus my current show is doing a final load of performances in London at the Udderbelly Festival in April. Is this the best interview you’ve ever had? No it's not. But that's 'cause I'm typing it. Mind you, if we talked it would be too waffle–y. I bang on a bit. Tony Law Nonsense Overdrive plays London’s Udderbelly Festival at Southbank Centre April 15 to 19 See www.mrtonylaw.com for details.

Y SAY LOU LOU

Y FRYARS

A repeat appearance on any ‘Who to watch in 2014’ list, Jillian Banks hails from LA. Her music is an original mix of RnB and London Underground, resulting in a very chilled but slightly eerie feel.

Cool looking, sultry sounding; ‘Say Lou Lou’ are twins from Australia with Swedish roots. Already a brilliant support act, they’ve gained a cult following and we’re sure the fans will multiply in 2014.

Londoner Ben Garrett’s 2014 releases are even stronger than his previous work; his cool electronica vibe is backed up by some great music videos.

Y THE FAMILY RAIN

Y Lo-Fang

These brothers have been on the festival scene for a couple of years now and have supported the likes of Jake Bugg & Miles Kane. 2014 promises more from these guys.

You're going to be seeing a lot more of versatile musician Lo-Fang in 2014 with the release of his debut album. Impressively, he sings all the vocals and plays all the instruments (of which there are many) on each of the tracks. Soon to be touring with Lorde, we're expecting big things.

2013 produced some great musicians AS WELL AS some we’d rather forget. Looking forward, here’s who to watch out for in the coming months.

An Indian restaurant in Waterloo Station, which lets customers select booths on two different levels, requiring them to climb up scaffolding and ladders to reach their table like an old Indian express train. 103 Waterloo Rd, London SE1 8UL

With swordfish steaks on the menu, an eclectic mix of bird cages, awesome prints & secret bookcase entrances, this is an awesome place to chill. We love the upturned flower pots - very 'Through The Looking Glass'. 8 Bennett's Hill, Birmingham, West Midlands, B2 5RS

On Old Compton Street you’ll find many illuminated ‘adult’ shops, but behind one of them lurks a stunning underground Mexican restaurant inspired in part by the Day of the Dead; reservations required! 16 Moor St, London W1D 5NH

It has a river running through it! With a bridge! Enough said. 24 Central Road, Leeds LS1 6DE

www.flat01.co.uk It looks like your gran’s house with vintage decor & furniture except I bet she doesn’t have resident DJs. Although she might have the supermarket booze (their beer of the week is whatever Tesco has on special offer) 162 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4SQ

4Y Clink78,

This new fast food restaurant in Athens has an awesome circus design with a ‘rotational’ concept; from circular tables and merrygo-round horses to the meat rotisserie, this restaurant puts the humble doner kebab to shame. Posidonos 79, Athens

www.clinkhostels.com One picture doesn’t do this uber-cool hostel justice as every room has some kind of highend design element. The bunk-bed step ladders are particularly clever. 78 King's Cross Road, London WC1X 9QG

www.hollywoodapartmentsliverpool.co.uk In the town of Jinan, waiters are replaced by a variety of crude robotic workers. If that wasn’t cool enough, they work for free so you don’t have to tip!

Hollywood Barges have created bespoke living quarters on the water with these themed boats; Check out The Yellow Submarine. Albert Dock, Liverpool, Merseyside, L3 4AS

SPIRIT STORY BOx This app tells you what nearby ghosts are thinking. You’d think the newsflash would be that it tells you that there are ghosts around you in the first place - but apparently that's a given.

LEFTOVER SWAP We all know that one person at the restaurant who says, ‘I’ll finish that’. What if they’re not with you when you need them!? Basically this app messages friends to say what the other couldn’t manage to finish. Downloading now.

Hold On The purpose of this app is to see how long you can hold on to a button on your touchscreen and see if you can better yourself each time. Think ‘The Button’ in Lost - but even more dull.

TAXI HOLD 'EM Puts a massive ‘Taxi’ logo on your phone so you can hail with ease. Essentially does what a hand can do. Except confuses a taxi driver more.

straight to voicemail Need to call someone but don’t really want to get dragged into a long conversation with them? Well this app automatically patches you to their voicemail without it ever ringing. Clever, but grow a pair and just don’t call them!
