Bill Gilroy ‘65 writes that he came out of retirement once again and accepted an offer to be the Assistant Varsity Tennis Coach at Severn School. Severn was playing its first year in the MIAA “A” Conference and ended the regular season undefeated. During the campaign the Admirals defeated longtime tennis power Gilman, a perennial “A” Conference champion contender. Severn’s #1 singles player finished the regular season and the end of year tournament undefeated, and its #1 doubles team finished the regular season undefeated before losing for the first time in the tournament finals, s to Gilman. Bill’s grandson, Aiden, a sophomore at Severn, was on the #1 doubles team, and his father, Bill, is BL Class of 1992. Bill ’65 writes, “It was a remarkable accomplishment for a team that had just moved up from the “B” Conference to the “A” Conference to finish undefeated and the #1 seed for the tournament. When I was asked to coach tennis for the first time a few years ago, I was reluctant since I had only coached lacrosse and basketball in the past. But I was encouraged by Severn’s head coach to do so, and it has been quite a unique experience... [I] hope to coach again next year since we are only losing one senior from the team and anticipate being able to do well in the A Conference again!”
