Mark Boucher often had an unorthodox, but wholehearted, approach. This is back in 1998, in the second of the Texaco Trophy one-day games, and he’s doing his darnedest to run out Alec Stewart. On this occasion, he didn’t get his man, but for the next 14 years, Boucher was his athletic and acrobatic self – until that dreadful accident at Taunton ended his career. You can tell from the lack of shadows the light wasn’t great and, looking back now, I’m slightly surprised I was using colour film, not black and white. To be technical for a moment, it was impossible to get a decent transparency film faster than 400 ASA, which meant motion blur was a real danger in this sort of light. From a photographer’s point of view, run-outs are often tricky: batsmen can run as wide as they like as they dive for the crease, and the last thing you want is half a person at the side of the frame!
