Prior to this appointment, he was the senior national correspondent for CBS News, reporting for CBS This Morning, the CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning, and other CBS News broadcasts and platforms. “Jim is an amazing ambassador for Bloomfield College and we couldn’t be more proud to have him on our team,” shared Nicole Quinn, Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “He deserves all the recognition and success. The Gala honored his friend and colleague, Bill Whitaker, of 60 Minutes, and raised over $600,000. “The unique magic of Bloomfield College took a hold of me and never let go,” Axelrod shared last year. “I became a fast advocate, a proud one at that. I often refer to the College as an ‘on ramp.’ The entire mission of Bloomfield College is to provide access to people who aren’t starting out at the same place as some more fortunate. Bloomfield College nursing and health science majors have great potential for high incomes and high job satisfaction levels. The College has been ranked 4th in New Jersey and 52nd nationally out of 679 institutions that offer four-year health science and nursing degrees, according to Payscale.com's 2019-20 College Salary Report. The College landed nationally in the top 8% of those ranked for this particular sector.
“Student success is the number one priority of Bloomfield College, and not just while they are enrolled,” said Dr. Marcheta P. Evans, College President. “Our rankings in the PayScale survey are just one more indication from a nationally-known rating service that Bloomfield College is successful in preparing our students for the workforce in their respective fields.” PayScale’s College Salary Report is based on a comprehensive database, with its sample size growing larger every year. The rankings were determined based on alumni salary data of 3.5 million respondents, representing more than 4,000 colleges and universities across the U.S. The report indicates early-career and mid-career pay numbers for alumni. This report is regularly used by prospective students as they research schools, majors, and careers.
“To see our alumni excelling on state and national levels in health science and nursing fields means a great deal to Bloomfield College,” said Dr. Maureen Grant, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. “This is a reflection of both the dedicated faculty and staff who strive to provide the absolute best for our students, and the perseverance and aptitude of our graduates.”

On Wednesday, December 4, New Jersey’s Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. spoke on C-Span about the benefits of Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Rep. Payne Jr. has been the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 10th congressional district, which includes Essex County, since 2012. “HBCU’s, at times, are criticized in this country for their necessity, but the creation of HBCU’s comes out of the inability for the larger population to accept minority students at colleges that were already established,” expressed Rep. Payne, Jr. “It is disingenuous to criticize HBCU’s for remedying a problem of inequality that still exists in this nation.”
In his remarks, he praised Bloomfield College, the only Predominately Black Institution (PBI) of higher education in New Jersey, as well as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), for its demonstrated success in the social mobility of its graduates, saying, “Bloomfield College does this at rates that far exceeds other universities.”
“In New Jersey we do not have HBCU’s, but we have many Minority Serving Institutions, take Bloomfield College, for instance,” he said. “Bloomfield College steps in and addresses more than its students’ academic needs…in other words, they solve several social problems at once.”
He was speaking in support of the Future Act and Minority Serving Institutions. He began his time at the podium saying, “MSI’s serve a critical role in our society,” noting that MSI’s have proven their importance, as studies have shown that minority students feel more supported when they are surrounded by their culture and receive better grades in those classrooms. He also shared that students at MSI’s display fewer behavioral problems and their upward mobility skyrockets.
“[Minority Serving Institutions] keep today’s low income students on a path to success,” said Rep. Payne, Jr. “They help close the wealth gap…and they provide hope and a future to a segment of America that needs it to so much. In closing, we will continue to advocate for these institutions. We need them to continue to do their service.” n Bloomfield College Gets Praised on C-Span O

Giving Thanks and Taking Care of Each Other
On Thursday, November 21, Bloomfield College hosted two special Thanksgiving dinners on its campus.
An all-student Thanksgiving dinner was held in the Dining Hall. Faculty and staff, alongside President Marcheta P. Evans and William H. Turner, Board Chair, assisted Gourmet Dining in serving the meal. They took orders, plated food, delivered it to the tables, and refilled drink orders, all with smiles on their faces.
Over 300 students were served salad, oven roasted turkey, cranberry glazed ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, homemade cornbread, and dessert.
“I can’t say strongly enough how much I believe in positive programming for our students - events that excite them to want to participate more, and in bringing pride to this community,” said Michael St. Blancard, Director of Dining Services. “This was an event that not only showcased our students, but also shined a light on the strength and dedication of Bloomfield College’s faculty and staff. It was a great source of pride to work beside them that evening, and witness such to the students.” That same evening, an International students’ (ITPS) Thanksgiving dinner was hosted by President Evans and Peter Jeong, Vice President for Global Programs and Professional Studies, in Westminster Hall, Room 110. Also catered by Gourmet Dining, the evening consisted of a similar menu and a number of festive performances that showcased the visiting students’ heritage and culture. Over 15 countries were represented in the over 100 guests. A true coming-together-moment came when Bloomfield College students showed the visiting students how to do the Bloomfield Shuffle, the College’s signature dance.

HOMECOMING AND REUNION ON THE QUAD
Bloomfield College hosted its annual Homecoming and Reunion on Saturday, October 12. Over 225 alumni and friends reunited on the main quad of campus to celebrate — from new alumni members to Newcombe Scholars to a member of the class of 1952. The day couldn't have been better, as it was 70 degrees and sunny. There was a live band, a lovely BBQ buffet, dancing, and a lot of memory sharing and catching up with one another. Deacon the Bear stopped over for pictures and campus tours led by the College's student ambassadors were offered to guests. The classes of 2009, 1994, and 1969 received class pins directly from Dr. Marcheta P. Evans in honor of their milestone years.
SPEAKER SERIES RECAP

Bloomfield College wrapped up its latest run of its Speaker Series in November. The fall semester welcomed Jeremy Farrell, Legal Advisor and Head of Government Affairs and Corporate Citizenship at LeFrak; Tai Cooper, Vice President for Policy and Communication with New Jersey Economic Development Authority; and Jonathan Simon, Executive Director, Head of Student Strategy Advancing Black Leaders, at JP Morgan Chase & Co.
The series began through Student Affairs in the spring of 2018 after Matthew Frankel was introduced to the College by Trustee Hank Uberoi. Frankel, who acts as moderator for the series, is the former Press Secretary and Press Aide for House Democratic Leader Richard A. Gephardt, Congresswoman Debbie Stabenow, the Democratic Leadership Council, and a variety of national and local political and advocacy campaigns across the country. He is currently consulting on the College’s Strategic Plan.
The mission of the Speaker Series is to connect Bloomfield College students with successful professionals, promote the intellectual environment of the College, and to facilitate discussion of important issues facing students today as they transition from college life to their careers.
First Gen and Proud

Bloomfield College celebrated its third annual First Generation College Day on November 5. The national observance of this day is November 8. The day was launched in 2017 by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Center for First-generation Student Success.
More than half of the student body at Bloomfield College are the first in their families to attend college and work toward a bachelor’s degree.
Run on campus by TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), First Generation Day welcomed not just the College’s first-gen students, but also any faculty and staff who identify as the first in their families to attend college. The mixer ran from 2:00 through 4:00 p.m. and was held in Westminster Arts Center.
“The third annual First-Generation Day Celebration was a huge success,” said Yannett Bagçe, Director of TRIO Student Support Services. “As a first-generation student myself, I know the importance of students and staff having a shared space to discuss their journeys and shared experiences through higher education.”
President Marcheta P. Evans gave opening remarks, there was a raffle, and Da’John Graves ‘21 was announced as the winner of the first generation t-shirt design contest. The event was sponsored by nine departments and organizations within the College including TRIO SSS, TRIO McNair Scholars, CSLE, Residence Life, Office of Institutional Advancement, Holley Program in Applied Ethics, Bloomfield College Alumni Association, EOF, and the First Year Seminar program.

In September, students, faculty, and staff joined Dr. Evans on the Quad to celebrate their Bloomfield College pride. All were decked out in Bloomfield College gear for the first official Bloomfield College Spirit Day under the new President. The turnout was truly something to see, and everyone who was there was able to learn the “Bloomfield Shuffle” dance thanks to our students!
Annual Fall Open House

High school and transfer students got acquainted with Bloomfield College at Fall Open House on Sunday, November 10. Hosted in the College’s gym, the annual Open House was an opportunity for over 200 prospective students and their families to tour campus and attend information sessions on Athletics, Career Services, Support Services (EOF and CITEL), and Financial Aid.
“This was my first Open House with Bloomfield College and it was wonderful to see the College community come together in support of such an important event,” said Kevin Cavanagh, who joined the College as Vice President for Enrollment Management early last winter. “The families that were in attendance got to see the best of Bloomfield College and all it has to offer them as they take the next step on their educational journey.”
Rose Mitchell, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs; alumnus Adrian Smart ’19; and Nicole Cibelli, Director of Admissions also provided remarks, sharing tips and encouragement to guests.
All seven academic divisions were represented, alongside support offices including Advising, Honors, CSLE, Admission, Disability Services, TRIO SSS, Residence Life, the Bloomfield College Alumni Association, McNair, the Wellness Center, PBI Grant, Greek Council, and numerous other clubs and organizations. n

Student Spotlight on Milka and Michael

Milka Ramos-Gallo ’21, a student employee at the College’s media center, began a project nearly one year ago that will preserve a special part of Bloomfield College’s history. Ramos-Gallo started to accession and transcribe correspondence dated between the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, during the time the College was a seminary. The letters are from missionaries who traveled to Africa to set up religious schools and paint a vivid picture of what life was like separated by continents.
Ramos-Gallo became fascinated with reading the letters, finding it interesting that the messages were being mailed to local towns like Orange and Glen Ridge, NJ. She took the time to educate herself on the College’s storied 151-year history in order to possibly match the letters to certain moments in the College’s timeline.
This was made possible with a grant from the SWEP, the Summer Work Experience Program. “I was able to learn so much about the College’s history! I was able to see how Bloomfield College has grown since it was a small seminary and how, in Africa, the missionaries were opening their own school and did their best to educate local students,” shared Ramos-Gallo. “I also got a glimpse into how different our lives are compared to how these people lived. It opened my eyes and I was really impressed with how the missionaries navigated their world at that time.”
The next stage of this undertaking was to scan the letters and make them available online, along with transcriptions and summaries, as the documents have faded and penmanship is sometimes hard to decipher. The high-quality scanner was donated by the Bloomfield College Alumni Association. Ramos-Gallo began the next phase of work once she returned from Europe, where she spent the semester studying abroad. M
An award ceremony for Essex County Cops 4 Kids was held on December 19 at Barringer High School in Newark. According to its website, Essex County Cops 4 Kids is a nonprofit that provides activities and one-on-one, hands-on mentorship for young people ages 10 to 20 who have an interest in learning more about careers in Law Enforcement.
One of the award recipients was Michael Giordano, a rising sophomore at Bloomfield College. Giordano, who is currently studying computer programming at the College, received one award (Explorer A.I.D of the Year) and two certificates (Stop The Bleed training and CPR training) during the ceremony, and served as leader of the honor guard. “Essex County Cops 4 Kids is a second home to me; a place where I know if I have a problem I can talk to my advisors or fellow members about what’s going on,” said Giordano, who noted that the Organization’s Executive Director, Essex County Sheriff Armando Aviles, filled the father-figure void in his life. “It was the first place where nobody judged me for being different because the program is highly diverse and inclusive.” Giordano became a part of the program when he was 15, after his mother learned about Essex County Cops 4 Kids. He aspires to work in cyber security one day. The Organization has over 140 members. If you are interested in learning more about the program, Giordano encourages you to visit the official website.
“I feel indebted to help out anyway I can,” said Giordano. “I know it’s some teens’ dreams to just go hang out with friends and party, but all I plan on doing is helping out our future generation.” n A

2013 ALUMNA ESTABLISHES FIRST SCHOLARSHIP

Growing up, Danielle Patterson’s parents, Charles and Donna Patterson, ingrained in her the importance of giving back. Since graduating from Bloomfield College, Patterson has donated much of her time to the College, traveling from where she lives in Maryland to New Jersey to participate on panels and speak at events hosted by the College. Now, just six years after earning her degree, Patterson has established The Danielle C. Patterson ‘13 G.A.P Scholarship. “Six years ago, Danielle was handpicked by faculty to speak at the annual President's Dinner, which is held the evening before Commencement. Even back then, she talked about her plans to give back to the College by creating a scholarship,” recalled Nicole Quinn, Interim Vice President for Advancement. “We are happy that she achieved her goal to help current students. She is an inspiration to all of us.”
“G.A.P” in the title takes on two meanings. For one, it will provide gap funding, serving as a retention scholarship open to all majors, based on financial need and academic merit. “G.A.P” also stands for “God Appointed.”
Though the scholarship itself is not religiously affiliated with Christianity, Patterson said, “God has blessed me and now I am in a position where I can be a blessing to others. I would hate for someone’s greatness to be delayed, because their education stalled due entirely to lack of funding.”
Patterson recalled a time during her high school years when a generous donor, whom she never met, provided her a scholarship which enabled her to compete in the National Level for the Health Occupation Students of America Competition, which ultimately led to Bloomfield College, graduate school, and her current job.
“I hope people realize that you do not need to be a billionaire to give back and that someone that doesn’t even know you personally wants you to succeed,” she said. “I hope my scholarship provides stress relief to students so they can focus on what really matters — their degree.”
Patterson graduated with a degree in biology from Bloomfield College and is currently a Clinical Histotechnologist at John Hopkins School of Medicine & Chesapeake Urology. She is also enrolled in the Master of Science in Biotechnology program with a concentration in Biodefense at Hopkins and is expected to graduate in August 2020.
She hopes to one day become a manager for Hopkins’ Anatomical Pathology Department and expand her cleaning business. n G

OOne of Bloomfield College’s greatest strengths is its alumni. On Tuesday, November 12, the College held its largest alumni panel to date. Fourteen alumni returned to their alma mater to take part in the panel, “What I Know Now, That I didn’t Know Then.” Hosted by the Bloomfield College Alumni Association (BCAA), current students had the opportunity to get tips and insights into preparing for job fairs, dressing for success, and other important topics regarding career readiness.
“This was a really great event for our students,” said John Murdock ’73, Bloomfield College Alumni Association President. “It was wonderful to see alumni spanning many graduation years come together to pass on advice and answer questions about what to do to prepare for life after college.”
With expertise ranging from finance to higher education to community relations to STEM, the panelists discussed their experiences at Bloomfield College and how they obtained their first job and ultimately landed in their current employment. “I had a great time sitting on a panel with alumni who helped me along my journey, others who I helped, and others I had the pleasure of meeting,” reflected Shavon Ford ’07. “Every time I return to campus it evokes nostalgia; Bloomfield College changed my life. There were many first generation students in attendance who are student leaders. The panel mirrored the students, I remember being in their shoes. I believe the night provided the students with a greater sense of purpose, reassurance and direction.” n Alumni Career Panel Gives Students Perspectives on Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities

New Year greetings from Bloomfield College!
We are very fortunate to have many dedicated alumni who invest their time, talents, and resources in the viability of the College. If it has been a while since you engaged with the College, as President of the Bloomfield College Alumni Association, I invite you to reconnect with us. The BCAA often has a front row seat to the best college events and is “in the know” about exciting college updates before the masses! Most importantly, we engage with current students — the future alumni of our college — like no other external group. This past December we even had a joint holiday celebration! We are here for them, to help guide them through graduation and beyond.
There are over 10,000 alumni living throughout the United States and internationally, excelling in every type of profession imaginable. We hope to expand our efforts in reconnecting with alumni from all decades with more networking opportunities and gatherings. I personally hope to see you at the next one!
Sincerely,

Peralta ’17 started her own events company, “Midnight Market.” She co-founded this company with her best friend after they took note of the influx of people moving from New York City to New Jersey who were looking for fun things to do. Midnight Market became the area’s first 21+ nightlife market. It is an indoor festival that features over 20 local food vendors selling tapas-styled bites, with an on-site bar and DJ. Their goal was to create an affordable, indoor night market where guests did not have to go into the City to have a great time and vendors can continue to work throughout the winter months. She has recently founded “Jersey City Night Market” which has seen great success. Pictured with her co-founder, Alysis Vasquez.
