By Damian George Picton Museum is celebrating a century since the iconic Perano whaling company took to the Marlborough waters, by extending its whaling display throughout July and August, and posssibly longer. This month marks exactly 100 years since J.A. Perano and Company, founded by Perano brothers Joseph and Charles, captured its first whale in Tory Channel, after it had begun whaling in May, 1911. The family business continued until 1964, when it was being run by ‘Joe’s’ sons Gilbert and namesake Joseph. Picton Museum president Mike Taylor says he came across the milestone while rummaging through the museum’s archives recently. “And I thought ‘well, there’s Picton Museum secretary Angela Scott points to new additions to the museum’s whaling exhibit. a good move’ [to extend the display]. The Red Devils were consigned to defence for much of the game as the enterprising Japanese made most of the play, though they squandered several try-scoring opportunities. Scores: Japan A 22 (Tomoaki Taniguchi 2, Taiki Koyanagi tries, Ayumi Goromaru 2 con, pen) Marlborough 8 (Daniel Hawkins try, pen). Halftime: Japan A 15-3.

Method For every cup of Arborio rice you will need at least 3 cups of liquid. Heat the stock and wine in a saucepan bring to a light boil, turn the heat down. In a big based pan, sauté the onion in the olive oil until transparent. Add the rice and sauté until the grains go white don’t let them brown. Add 1/3 of the mushrooms and one ladle of liquid in with the rice and stir through until liquid is absorbed by the rice. Keep ladling the liquid into the rice repeating the
earlier process adding the mushrooms as you go. Staggering the addition of the mushrooms will give the risotto a different texture. You can add them in one lot if you prefer. Continue adding the liquid until the rice is just soft and is going creamy, if you run out of liquid use hot water and salt and pepper to taste. Cold water won’t absorb the same way and the risotto won’t become creamy. When the rice is cooked through, turn off the heat and sprinkle through the blue cheese. Serve, Top with parsley.
