This is the second time Linda has qualified for the national event and making her win even more special, she is the only female competitor from Marlborough to qualify.

She says from this point on there will be a lot of practice as she prepares herself.

“There’s a lot of hard work to do to catch up to the Canterbury guys, they make it look so easy.

“Some of those guys plough 25 matches a year so they are very experienced, but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to,” she says.

From a spectator’s seat ploughing might look fairly easy and repetitive, but Linda says there’s a huge amount involved.

“It’s quite physical and testing. You are working levers, adjusting the plough, on and off the tractor constantly...It’s great exercise.

“The judging is very involved and you need to be consistent in the way you plough. There’s certainly a lot to it and I’m hoping to get some coaching tips and plenty of practice before the national finals,” she says.

The 2016 Plough Qualifying Event was held near Renwick over Saturday and Sunday, attracting a good number of people to watch, Marlborough Ploughing Association president Allan Gifford says.

“The Clydesdales are always a hit and great to watch, but we did see a lot of people out watching the tractor ploughing. A number of people were asking questions about the judging and showing a good interest in ploughing which is great to see.

“Ploughing is not as common as it used to be so to have an event like this is great for people to watch and learn

Huge number of submissions for plan

By Cathie Bell More than one thousand submissions have been lodged on the revised Marlborough Envi ron ment Pla n, t he Marlborough District Council says.

The draft plan consolidates the region’s resource management documents into a single plan to guide growth and development in the region while protecting natural and physical resources.

Submissions closed last week and council planning staff now have the job of summaris-

ing the decisions requested for a Hearings Panel to consider.

Council’s environmental

policy manager Pere Hawes says until that’s completed it won’t be clear which parts

of the plan have attracted the most interest.

“One thousand and thirty three submissions have come in. That includes some people making multiple submissions and two pro forma-type contributions where many individuals have submitted a standardised submission.”

A summary of the submissions will be published, setting out all the requests from those who have made submissions.

The public will have the opportunity to give feedback on the points raised in submis-

sions through further submissions before the Hearings Panel makes its decisions on the final content of the Marlborough Environment Plan.

Submitters and further submitters may present in person to the Hearings Panel prior to decisions being made.

The provisions of the plans relating to marine farming in Marlborough are being reviewed separately and councillors decided that a broad representative working group be set up to do this.

Hayden Paddon makes appearance at Hanmer Rally

By Celeste Alexander Havelock boys Taylor and Conor Clark were absolutely thrilled to meet their rally hero at the weekend, Hayden Paddon.

Hayden, New Zealand rally driver and World Rally Championship champion was attending a rally event in Hanmer while on an unexpected break after the China rally was cancelled due to flood damage of the rally route.

What made it special to Hayden was the fact that the Hamner Rally was the scene of his first ever rally in 2002 and first event victory in 2005.

He says it was “great to see how strong the local rally scene is and just how many young upcoming drivers are in the pipeline”.

For Taylor and Conor it was very exciting to meet Hayden in person.

The brothers, along with their parents, were at the airport earlier in the year to greet Hayden’s co-driver John Kennard when he returned home for a visit.

John lives in Blenheim when he is not helping Hayden navigate rallies around the world.

Their parents Jason and Tracy Clark are rally drivers themselves and were taking part in the event.

Unfortunately the couple experienced electrical problems but managed to rejoin.

The Hanmer Rally saw eight teams from the Marlborough Car Club make the trip for some great forestry stages around Hanmer.

The field started at 63 and there were just 11 non finishers.

Richard Bateman and Sharisse Guckert, as well as Regan Ross and Blair Bartels, placed in the top 10.

Dave Gee and Liam Gee were 12th, Lloyd Owen and Jonty Brenssell were 26th, Steve Cattermole and Mark Clemens were 30th, Allan Kermeen and Sarah Faulkner were 37th and David Taylor and Pania Huntley placed 38th.

Tractors on tour Massey Fergusson tractors like those used by Sir Edmund Hillary in Antarctica are passing through Picton and Blenheim as part of a fundraising effort to preserve the huts he used in Antarctica.

The Expedition South team arrive in Picton today and will be at the Picton Marina between 5.30pm and 6.30pm today, and in Blenheim tomorrow at Allan Scott Family Wines between 4 and 6pm.

Blooming beautiful display for camellia Spring Show Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Walking around the garden of Blenheim man Harvey Howard it’s obvious that he is passionate about growing camellias.

He has several different varieties, including ones he has created himself, as well as a number of colourful showstoppers capable of impressing those who walk by.

For those who like the thought of being surrounded by colourful blooms, the annual ‘Spring Show’ is being held this Saturday by the Marlborough Branch of the New Zealand Camellia Society.

This annual event has been running for 48 years in Marlborough and has its own panel of local judges.

Harvey is the organiser of this year’s show which is being held at the St Christophers Anglican Church in Redwoodtown.

The show will not only feature camellias but also daffodils providing a ‘festivity of colour’, Harvey says.

The show will be open to the public on Saturday between 9am and 4:30pm, and the cost of entry is a gold coin donation.

A category for novices has been included in this year’s lineup which will allow people passionate about their flowers to see how theirs stack up against the competition.

This winter, 32 ground frosts were recorded compared with 41 last year, 31 in 2014 and 35 in 2013.

Overall, this year recorded a below average number of frosts, the data shows.

Housing tool launched

By Cathie Bell A new tool has been developed to help older people make the best choice about housing for them, and it was presented in Marlborough last week.

The Centre for Research, Evaluation, and Social Assessment has coordinated research on housing changes in older people as part of a wide-ranging look at housing in New Zealand. Some of the research was carried out in Marlborough.

Marlborough-based research director Kay Saville-Smith says downsizing is not always the best option for people and it does not always free up as much equity as people anticipate.

There are other options than home ownership for people, such as a licence to occupy or renting, and these should be considered too, she says.

The tool sets out the options in great detail and helps people work through what works best for them. It is available online and in hard copy, from the centre.

Kay says it doesn’t provide the solution for people, but it helps them clarify what they want and options to help them achieve that.

The tool was launched at the seminar on Friday afternoon, along with presentations on the research gathered by the centre and its partners.

Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman opened the seminar, saying housing presented lots of challenges.

Downsizing is easy to recommend to people, but smaller houses are hard to find, and people aren’t building many of them, he says.

“It’s key to make sure housing is fit for purpose.”

Food friendships Story and photo by Joanne Holden Students at Marlborough Boys’ College had no issues with the language barrier while teaching Japanese exchange students to make kiwi burgers and smoothies.

‘It’s pretty easy,’ student Kaleb Wyatt says.

‘And it’s easy to get along with them.’

Thirty-three teenagers from Jissen Gakuen, sister school to the college, arrived last Wednesday in an exchange that has been going between the two institutions for 18 years.

A chunk of their Friday was spent making food using ingredients that are simple to find around the Marlborough region.

Food technology teacher Carolyn Brown says that, although the visiting students

know minimal English, the act of cooking is understood in every language.

A practical learning activity allows local and Japanese students to work and socialise together without difficulty, Carolyn says.

The Blenheim students were also able to hone their abilities through helping their sister school.

‘It’s a good opportunity for the year 11 hospitality students to practise their organisation and teaching skills,’ Carolyn says.

Some of the local guys involved with the cooking are hosting a Japanese student at their home - like Billy Powel, who describes the exchange group as ‘really kind’.

The designers of these signs maybe very ‘Smart’ and well ‘Connected’, but their work put forward is lacking practicality and common sense.

These creations would be just another disaster as so many other “bloopers” (what rate payers have to pay for) created by the outgoing council.

This kind of folly reminds me strongly of the bus shelter on SH 1 with the glass roof sloping the wrong way which was erected by this Council at a cost of $250,000.

Fab helpers Dear Ed, One can’t help noticing, whenever there are collections on in town, (take such as Daffodil Day) and there are photos in the paper, there never seems to be a mention of all the people behind the scenes who do all the making of food or serving food. etc.

As mentioned, the people behind the scenes who work for hours doing the good job feeding the collectors and preparing food never seem to get a mention.

Theatre kitchen Damage devastating Dear Ed, How distressing it is to hear of the Cancer Society’s gorgeous display on the banks of the Taylor River being wrecked by some hoon on a mobility scooter.

The hours and hours of work that went into that display by young citizens of Marlborough and their many supporters who made it happen, they must be so upset.

I passed that display often since it was put up and just loved its happy, positive display.

Shame on that miscreant!

Learning to be encouraged

By Cathie Bell Graduates of the Marlborough public libraries’ Stepping Up technology courses have been awarded their certificates this week.

Staff at the libraries in Picton and Blenheim run the courses each year to help people, particularly older people, learn to use different sorts of computer programmes, working with REAP, the rural education activities programme.

The libraries are used by different people in the community and provide free Wifi and public computers through the APNK network and so they are ideal locations to offer computer classes, librarian Jane Robinson says.

The Stepping Up courses have become more popular since they were first offered two years ago and now eight staff in Blenheim

and Picton teach three classes a week, almost all year round.

In the past financial year, they have delivered 83 courses to 434 people.

This week is Adult Learning Week and REAP’s community education organiser Ailsa Carey says it is ‘fabulous’ to see people still learning.

“That’s what this week is all about, that’s what Stepping Up courses are all about.”

The courses are provided with the 2020 Trust, and product manager Sue Kini says everyone needs to have a digital footprint these days, and Stepping Up courses help people with that.

“There’s a group though in part of our community who aren’t familiar with computers or digital technology, there’s a gap.”

Thirty years and counting

By Joanne Holden Elizabeth Winter has been volunteering at the local Citizens Advice Bureau for three-and-a-half hours a week for the past 30 years.

“Don’t ask me to add that up,” she says.

Elizabeth began at the bureau in 1986, only seven years after the Blenheim branch opened, and has no plans to leave anytime soon.

“I wouldn’t do voluntary work unless I enjoyed it, and I’m still enjoying the work.

“It’s interesting, it’s varied,

so why not go on?,” she says.

Elizabeth is responsible for updating the database, but she has had many jobs during her time at the bureau includ-

ing chairman, secretary, and trainer for volunteers coming in.

She says the work is ‘very satisfying’ and as a result volunteers do not often leave, but there is always room for more.

“We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers who want to give their time,” she says.

The bureau only has two training courses a year, but prospective volunteers can still be trained at alternate times.

Renee brings the music back Award-winning former Picton singer-songwriter Renee Maurice is returning to Marlborough for a charity concert next month, she tells Glenise Dreaver about that and the international recognition she’s received for her work.

Two gold medals and three bronze.

That’s the medal tally won by former Picton singer-songwriter Renee Maurice in the annual World Championships of Performing Arts in Long Beach California in early July.

It’s like the Olympics of the performing arts,” she says of the contest, which attracted 1500 contestants from 50 countries.

“But my score can’t compare with Michael Phelps,” she adds, comparing her medal tally to that of her hero.

The winner of New Zealand’s Got Talent in 2013, Renee was one of 19 in the New Zealand team.

She and husband Joe, also formerly of Picton (who adopted Renee’s surname on their marriage) stayed at the luxury hotel the Western for two weeks, but at their own expense.

One gold was for the best original song, the title song for the Picton production ‘Warchild’ in 2007.

“That was judged best in the world,” she said.

“And it was created and performed first in Marlborough. That’s so cool.”

Needless to say it’s on the concert programme.

The other gold was for her performance of the pop number ‘Say Something’.

Her three bronzes were in jazz ‘Angel Eyes’, for a Broadway number ‘Children of Eden’ and the third for her acting a scene about the wet towel treatment from her own musical ‘Seacliff’.

The writing and staging of ‘Seacliff’, was inspired by the treatment of mental illness there in the 1950s.

“People know about the electrical shock therapy, but not so many know about the

insulin therapy. Patients were injected with huge doses of insulin, rendering them helpless. They couldn’t even walk.”

Renee wrote the musical, which was staged in Dunedin, and produced it from scratch.

“I auditioned local performers, went down every weekend for rehearsals and organised everything – publicity, ticket sales, the lot.”

The successful musical recouped much of the tens of thousands it had cost and winning New Zealand’s Got Talent had enabled the project, she says. She is planning to stage it in Wellington in 2017.

Renee has a long association with the national Starjam organisation, empowering young people with disabilities to achieve their full potential through music and performance.

Her next project is also to support the disabled, in a homecoming charity concert ‘Wicked and Wonderful’ to be held in Blenheim on October 7.

She and Wellington soprano Tania Parker will indulge their sense of fun and a shared passion for music.

They will sing across a wide range of styles from pop to opera, on the ‘Wicked and Wonderful’ theme, including some duets.

Some of the music with which Renee has won her multiple awards, including her own compositions, will also be featured at the event.

Both singers have strong family associations with the Papatuanuku Independency Trust Inc of Waikawa, for which the concert is being staged.

The trust’s commitment to caring for and main streaming their residents, who live with intellectual disability, will be carried through with a free coffee and cakes supper.

NeillyRich to play Nashville classic

By Cathie Bell Count r y music duo NeillyRich are to play in Nashville for the first time ever this month, fulfilling a dream long held by the couple.

Matthew McNeilly, previously from Blenheim, and his wife Amelia Richards are based in Australia and will be visiting Nashville, the home of country music as part of a Sounds Australia contingent, artists who were hand-picked to perform as part of the annual event.

Matthew says the big show for the couple will be playing at the Bluebird Café, a famous venue.

“It’s obviously a dream come true,” he says.

“The Bluebird is definitely a big deal. It’s where a lot of artists had their lucky break. It’s a real staple of the Nashville experience if you’re going there for country music.

“I can’t wait.”

Business flourishes Pete and Maryann James decided to take on the Think Water Franchise in 2014 after previously trading as Waterworks Marlborough Limited since 1996.

Craft fair now a regular event

Welcome to the WELCOME TO THE SOCIETY CancerCANCER Society MARLBOROUGH Marlborough

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Knitting, children’s accessories, baking and more will be lovingly handcrafted and sold at an up and coming event organised by the Riversdale Community House in Blenheim.

The Handcraft Fair will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 11am - 3pm at its Budge Street location.

The fair was introduced earlier this year as a new initiative and has been so well received that it’s becoming a regular fixture on the house’s calendar.

House administrator Sue Houghton says those who took part and attended at the previous fair thought it was a “great idea”.

“We thought we would run two more this year, one this month and another in November.

“It’s an opportunity for locals to showcase their crafts.

It’s not expensive to have a stall and is an enjoyable day for all,” she says.

There will be everything from knitting through to jewellery, beads, wood and pebble art and even mosaics.

To have a stall costs $5. You can book by contacting the Riversdale Community House.

With the help of volunteers we work with local health professionals and community groups to ensure that information about living well, cancer treatment and support, and survivorship, is available to anyone who needs it; free or with minimal charges. Kings and Queens’ outings diverse

By Joanne Holden The events hosted by the Kings and Queens section of the Clubs of Marlborough are as diverse as its members.

The oldest member is 82 while the youngest is the two-month-old daughter of another member, and they and everybody in between come together once a month for a social outing that differs each time.

Next up is croquet.

Events are decided at the annual

general meeting, which often has a turnout of 40 members.

“We let the people come along to that and let us know what they would like to do, that’s how we get our different things,” club president Ray Barrett says.

If an event is popular, it becomes a staple for the group.

Mini golf, small bore shooting, and a trip to Kaikoura for the horse racing are all annual events.

Club secretary Deana Quissy says joining the group is an op-

portunity to try activities you would never do on your own and to meet new people.

“All we’re aiming for is fun and friendship,” she says.

People interested in joining or finding out more about the club can contact Deana at The Clubs of Marlborough.

River planting workshop on More tree plantings are to be put in along the Taylor River Reserve this weekend as part of Conservation Week.

Organisers say this is the third annual planting day for the Taylor River project, organised by the Marlborough Landscape Group.

This year the focus is on trees of the world, as part of the Ralph Ballinger Arboretum (collection of trees) to celebrate Marlborough’s diverse population and links around the world.

“Anyone who walks, cycles or takes their dog along the Taylor River pathway will have seen the progress as the plantings have grown over the past few years.

“Now’s your chance to plant a tree and contribute to this great community project.”

People are encouraged to meet at the Monro Street at 10am on Sunday with a spade and sturdy boots. The planting will run until noon.

If it is wet, the event will be postponed until Sunday September 18.

Leisure marchers clothing sale Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Kon Tiki Leisure Marchers will be busy this week sorting through bags upon bags of clothing donated to them for fundraising.

The team will be holding a big Preloved Clothing Sale this Saturday where they will be selling clothing, accessories, jewellery, shoes and more at “really cheap prices”, team coach Vicky Stuart says.

“We are just astounded at the amount and quality of the clothing that has been donated to us. Some of it still has tags on and has never been

The team is fundraising to help cover travel expenses for when they attend the National Leisure Marching Days in Wellington next year.

The idea to hold this sale came from team member Gloria Carberry. She says she was planning to clean her drawers out and thought; “Why not get all the girls to do it and have a big sale”.

“It has just escalated from there.

Team members, family and friends have all gathered heaps of bags of clothing for the sale.

“Because of how much we have

accumulated we have had to change venue too. We were planning to have it at the Red Cross Rooms but now we’ll be at the Waterlea Racecourse Hall,” Gloria says.

The team will be pricing the clothing for no more than $3 per item, and shoes will be $3 to $5.

“We want to keep it all as cheap as possible,” Vicky says.

The Preloved Clothing Sale will be held this Saturday, September 10 between 10am and 2pm.

Entry is by gold coin and people are asked to come in off the Linton Street entrance (via Hutcheson Street).

Josh Gwynne still hitting tennis highs

By Cathie Bell Former Blenheim teenager Josh Gwynne is having success with his tennis career.

Josh was in town on a mid-term break from his Wellington secondary school, but popped in to the Sun office to thank people for their continued interest in his sporting career.

The teenager says he appreciates the backing he’s had from many Marlborough people, particularly Mike Pero agent

He recently won an Auckland tennis tournament, which he describes as ‘a laidback event’, and says he is still ‘really enjoying’ the tennis.

The year 12 student moved to Wellington at the start of this year to develop in the Scots College sports programme.

Josh has a shoulder injury which has stopped him playing for about four weeks, but he hopes to be hitting the courts again

soon.

His school is entering him in several International Tennis Federation tournaments in Auckland and Hamilton later in the year against international competitors.

Sportspeople to be honoured Nine people will be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame and 29 added to the Sports Roll of Honour at the annual ceremony this month.

Sport Tasman says the awards function and mayoral reception at the Marlborough District Council on September 23 will see at least 38 nominees inducted, although this may be boosted by some last-minute nominations.

Those nominated for the Hall of Fame must have been selected to represent New Zealand at full senior level or at an international event, while Roll of Honour nominees must have represented New Zealand at

age group level or as a member of a special national team.

Sport Tasman community sport advisor Terri Willcocks, who organises the awards, says the number of nominations shows the strength and depth of sport in the district, particularly in rowing, yachting and volleyball which has most nominations.

She says it’s important to record and honour the achievements of Marlborough sportsmen, women, coaches and officials who through their efforts, dedication and talent have gained recognition at national and international level.

“The (Sports Hall of Fame) Book

of Recognition gets bigger and bigger every year and shows how well Marlborough does on the national stage.”

The book, which is held at the Blenheim library, was established in 1933.

Meanwhile, Terri is urging sports groups and clubs to submit their nominations for the annual Marlborough Sports Awards, which will be held on November 21 at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, September 9, a month earlier than usual because of the local body elections.

Olympic rower spends day at Renwick School

By Celeste Alexander Renwick School was lucky enough to have a visit from Tom Murray, Olympic rower in the eights, who attended the school’s Spring Games event last Thursday.

Tom officially opened the games and spent time with students and signed autographs.

In a talk he gave to the school, he shared his Olympic journey, saying that it all began while he was at Renwick School through his participation in school events such as cross country and athletics.

The event was planned, developed and managed by the year seven and eight students and included the whole school over a day.

The school represented the Olympics with its own set of events and rewards including games such as dodgeball, relays, hula hoop and various other ball games.

Teacher Jeanette Lammas says the school was lucky to have Tom attend and he was ‘amazing’.

“He opened the games and stayed at the school for the whole day. He joined the kids in lots of their events, talked to them about his Olympic experiences and generally got involved enthusiastically in all that was going on,” Jeanette says.

Mini-motorcross success

By Cathie Bell Six year-old Blenheim boy Cruz Graham was a winner at last weekend’s minimotorcross event.

The event was a great success, organisers say, with 60 children between five and 11 entered and people travelled from Christchurch and Nelson and as far as Methven to take part.

Local rider Cruz Graham who’s just turned six was a ‘standout performer’ in the small 50cc race class, his mother Michelle Graham says.

“He won five out of six races and came home with the first place trophy,” she says.

“He has been riding since he was three years old and is known for having great style.”

Another standout performer from Blenheim was Leyland Fisher who got first place in the five to eight years trail riding section.

Organiser Ross Davis says it was a great

event and organisers are feeling ‘pretty overwhelmed’ by the positive response, especially from the people who came from out of town.

“There’s a strong indication that people want us to run the event again.”

The biggest thing on the event was that there were about 20 new riders, Ross says, which was of huge benefit to the sport.
