Scientist inspires

There’s some ground breaking medical research taking place in New Zealand which is proving that the immune system can be used and manipulated naturally to change disease outcomes, and at the helm is Blenheim born Scientist, Graham Le Gros.

Graham visited the region last week as part of a function organised and sponsored by Grant Baxter of Bayleys. Speaking to the Sun, Graham shared his memories of growing up in Blenheim and a teacher who inspired him to pursue science as a career.

Leading the way in science Growing up in Blenheim, Graham attended Mayfield School, Bohally Intermediate and Marlborough Boys’ College. He even stayed at the former colleges’ boarding house, Innes House, for a period of time.

During his youth he was naturally drawn towards marine science “thanks to the famous Jacques Cousteau”, he says.

“That was my first interest, but I always had a strong overall interest in science.”

During his time at MBC he says there were a number of “inspiring” teachers.

“Mr Stringer was my science teacher… he was a special teacher,” he says.

“There was a chemist too. I can’t remember his name, but I remember he used to make some great explosions,” Graham laughs. “I had a great life in Marlborough.”

After high school Graham explored a number of study options before heading over to the United States and training at the National Institute of Health in Washington DC. “I decided I really wanted to make an impact so I joined a large pharmaceutical company and worked on an anti-allergy drug,” he says.

He met h is wi fe, Fra nca Ronchese, a scientist specialising in the cancer immunology and allergy fields, and they went on to have two children.

Eventually Graham was enticed back to NZ by the directors of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and he and his wife now spearhead the asthma and allergy research programmes, finding new ways to treat and cure allergic disease.

Graham also leads an active

biomedical research programme in allergic and parasitic diseases.

However, the subject that Graham spoke about during his visit to Blenheim last week was particularly exciting - and a global first.

The Malaghan Institute, in partnership with Wellington Zhaotai Therapies, is developing and trialling a ‘third generation’ CAR T-cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell).

The therapy works by redirecting a patient’s own immune cells (T-cells) in the laboratory, to directly identify and attack cancer cells. These modified T-cells are then returned to the patient where they can attack and destroy cancer cells.

“It’s amazing new technology,” Graham says. “It’s like trying to drive a Ferrari and unleashing awesome power. You just have to watch you don’t hurt someone.

“This is why trials are so important and it can take years and lots of checking and testing.

“It’s an exciting time to be a scientist and I want to see more young people join the sciences.

It’s about getting talented young NZers, putting their skills into science and seeing them become leaders.

“I’d love to see kids in Marlborough think of the same career path… it’s a great life! When I’m asked what motivated me to become a scientist, I have to say it was curiosity.

“I will say you have to have some spirit, resilience, self-confidence and a genuine interest in science too,” he says.

Also speaking alongside Graham last week was a man who received CAR T-cell therapy and was cured.

was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer in January 2017. Despite chemotherapy treatment his condition became terminal.

He was accepted into a clinical trial in the US which was ultimately successful and as of two weeks ago,

he is completely cured.

David is now an advocate for the Malaghan Institute which is using this technology to create its own next generation CAR T-cell therapies to one day treat a range of cancers.

Cat companion missing

Crash claims local man

Where would we be without our pets? These animals share our homes.

They are companions, friends, part of our families - the thought of anything happening to them is unthinkable.

Therefore, we can all feel for Wayne and Sue Greenstreet, whose beloved cat, Bugsy, has been missing since last Sunday.

Bugsy is a pure-bred Birman. Wayne and Sue have had him for two and a half years, ever since he was a kitten.

Wayne has been “in ill health for the last six-years” so Bugsy was purchased to be a companion for him at home, while Sue is at work.

“We got him because we know the cancer I’ve got is aggressive,” says Wayne. “He’s been my buddy.”

Bugsy is “a creature of habit.” While he often wandered his home of the Harakeke life-style estate, he always returned back to Wayne and Sue. Being a “very friendly” cat, the neighbours all knew and recognised him. Therefore, Wayne and Sue were immediately worried when

he didn’t return Sunday night.

A week later, all they want is for Bugsy to come home. In addition to this, Bugsy has not been given his shots, meaning he could get very sick soon.

“If someone has got him, he’s in urgent need of his vaccinations,” Wayne says.

“He needs to be taken to the vet. You can take him to Vets on Alabama, Vet Marlborough, or Springlands Vet. They will give him his shots, no questions asked.”

Bugsy has been an immense source of love and joy for Wayne and Sue. They are devastated with his disappearance, and are waiting anxiously, hoping for news.

All they want is their beloved cat back.

“He’s my wee mate,” says Wayne. “You can see how much he means to us.”

Scammers take advantage The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing increased cyber security concern with people having to work from home, and industry experts urge people to take steps to better protect their IT devices.

This applies to people using IT devices at home and using a network not directly controlled by their business.

The COVID-19 outbreak has seen an increase of opportunistic cyber scam campaigns, such as emails being received purporting to have extremely important information to keep safe and include a link or attachment for more information to be accessed.

Police can now name the man who died following the serious crash on SH1, in Koromiko, South of Picton last Friday. Emergency services attended the scene at around 2pm.

He was 74-year-old Gary Kenny. The accident was a collision between a car and an SUV. Mr Kenny was flown to Wellington Hospital but died a short time later.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Mayor ‘rescued’ in demonstration Last Thursday at 6pm, Mayor John Leggett was rescued from the second floor of a building

by Marlborough’s Emergency Management Response Team. No need to worry, as it was merely a demonstration, with John playing the casualty needing to be rescued.

The scenario practiced was one where the casualty needed to be removed from a second level of a building with no stairs. In addition to this, the casualty needed to be kept level due to a hypothetical broken femur.

This led to John being gently lowered to the ground in a stretcher, in a manoeuvre called a ladder-hinge.

Large drug seizure

St Mary’s boys reunite after 60 years

There were hugs and handshakes aplenty when the St Mary’s Boys School forms 1 and 2 students from 1960 gathered together for a special reunion on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

According to reunion attendee, Mark Peters, 38 of the 46 students from the classes came along to the reunion, with many bringing their wives or partners.

“There were about 62 there, with 40 from out of town,” Mark says.

“Unfortunately, eight of the original 46 students have died, so not everybody could make it.”

He says the reunion was “really great” and “very fun”; all of the attendees were “pretty thrilled” to be there.

“It feels like barely any years have gone by,” Mark exclaims with a smile.

“The only difference is that we’ve all got grey hair now!”

Reunion activities included the group meeting for a dinner at the Clubs of Marlborough, making anecdotal speeches, going for a tour of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, and attending the current St Mary’s Church for Sunday mass.

One of the most positive things Mark recalls about the men’s time in forms 1 and 2 was that they were all “mates”.

“Nobody cared about what social class you were in or how much money your parents made,” he says.

“We were all equal.

“Once we went to college, [with some going to Marlborough Boys’ College and the rest going to other colleges in Christchurch and Wellington, etc,] we were divided into streams and categorised. “[Our time at St Mary’s] was cer-

tainly an idyllic kind of schooling.”

Since their school days, the men have gone on to do some amazing things.

Some have succeeded in top fields of research; one man became one of NZ’s top political reporters; some have done well in law, accounting, and in other areas of business.

Many of them have done a lot of travelling.

A number of the men, who Mark has seen a lot of over the years, even stayed in Marlborough and married local girls.

“There was so much to catch up on with people,” Mark says.

“Unfortunately there were too many of us at the reunion to really talk in depth with everybody.”

Most plan on returning to Blenheim in two years to celebrate St Mary’s School’s 150 year anniversary and getting together once more.

Last week the Police executed two search warrants in Marlborough that netted a significant quantity of cannabis that was being grown in commercial quantities.

A search of a rural property west of Havelock resulted in the seizure of 38 mature cannabis plants and 139 grams of dried cannabis plant material. Firearms were also seized and Police are continuing to investigate and consider charges in relation to the occupant of this property.

Police also executed a search warrant at a rural property in Queen Charlotte Drive. A total of 124 mostly mature cannabis plants were located in a series of indoor grow rooms with sophisticated filtration and lighting systems. A firearm was also seized.

Police are still investigating but are considering laying charges against two individuals occupying the property.

Police know that those who grow cannabis commercially do business with organised crime groups and the sale of their crops contributes to crime by helping to fund criminal activity. As a consequence Police will act whenever there is evidence of illicit activity relating to cannabis and any other illegal drug possession, cultivation, dealing, manufacture or use.

Unlawful Firearm Unlawful firearms in the hands of criminals continues to be of concern to Police and a risk to the public. Catch a ride on new shuttle

A handy solution may well have just presented itself for those who live in Havelock, often have odd jobs to do in Blenheim, and struggle to find transport between the two places.

Marlborough District Council, the Gallery Havelock, Port Marlborough and Havelock Vision 2020 have generously collaborated to fund a free weekly community shuttle from Havelock to Blenheim, which commenced yesterday and will continue to be offered every Tuesday from now onwards.

According to Havelock local, Jim Baillie, who fathered the idea and organised the project, the shuttle can be “used for anything that passengers want to do in town”. “... Shopping, gallery visits, lunch out, events, appointments, but mainly getting out and about and socialising,” Jim says.

“Assistance with errands will be available by the driver – usually me.”

Although the shuttle can be used by anybody, priority will be given to senior citizens, those with limited mobility, and those who have fixed appointments in town.

The shuttle service will pick passengers up from 9:30am to 10am each Tuesday and will return to Havelock at approximately 3pm.

There are only 11 seats available, so those wanting to utilise the shuttle must get in quick.

“For those living in Havelock, we can pick you up from your house, but if you are out of Havelock, we will pick [you] up from the community hub/site,” Jim says.

“We hope that [the shuttle] will be used regularly and we manage to accomodate everyone at least once a fortnight.”

To book a seat, volunteer as an additional driver, help out by supplying a wheelchair or two for passengers to use while in town, or to simply find out more information, please contact Jim on 021 153 9390.

Distraction causes crashes Driver distraction is often the initial factor in the chain of events that lead to a crash, says Acting Sergeant of the Marlborough Road Policing Team, Andy Holmes.

There are many potential causes of driver distraction such as events or activities taking place both inside and outside of the vehicle, but drivers using mobile phones

in a vehicle is a significant cause of driver distraction, Andy says.

“Sadly, we see people on their phones while driving every day – we are frequently pulling people over talking quite brazenly on their phones, but also with phones in their lap, looking up and down whilst texting.”

plays a part in around 30% of fatal and serious crashes, which amounts to about 120 deaths per year in New Zealand.

“Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds,” Andy says.

“At 90kmh, that’s like driving the length of a rugby field blindfolded. Studies have shown that

a driver is 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash if they are texting whilst driving.”

Andy recommends people put their phones on flight mode or in the glove box out of reach when they are driving, to remove the temptation to pick up their phones.

“If drivers do need to use their phones when they are in the car,

pull over in a safe place and stop to make or answer a call.

“If possible, ask a passenger to assist. Invest in a Bluetooth kit for your phone, so that calls can be answered or terminated at the touch of a button, keeping your attention where it should be – on the road.”

They proposed doing this either by a Treasury grant, based on a fuel purchase for a boat, or a combination of that and a levy on powered boat owners.

My experience of talking to fishers is that they just want to be able to fish, and while they are able to do that, few are interested in joining a pressure group to argue about the nuances of marine reserves or the Total Allowable Catch. Only a small number disobey the regulations, even when those

rules seem stupid.

Perhaps a more workable regulation might be to impose a ban on commercial fishing inshore, say to one or two kilometers offshore. Such a ban would quickly increase the fish available for recreational fishers, and could be easily enforced by the fishers themselves dobbing in lawbreakers. There appears to be no enthusiasm for the nuisance and cost of a licence, at least in Blenheim.

Fishing interests I was one of the 10 or so people who attended a meeting on Wednesday night to learn about the establishment of a group aiming to represent South Island Fishing interests. As I understood it, the aim was to confirm a Board of Directors, none of whom came from the Marlborough region, who would deal with government on fishing matters in the South Island.

Their principal activity seemed to me to raise money.

To add to the dilemma, foreign corporates own three quarters of the forestry industry and it’s climbing. In Marlborough the Malaysia-based, family-owned Tiong Group owns forestry, media and property assets around the

world. Their land holdings in New Zealand include the Ernslaw One forests, New Zealand King Salmon, and land owned by their property and land development company, The Neil Group.

In the Waihopai The Tiong’s carbon trading has taken valuable sheep farms out of production. The Tiongs are active felling rain forests, e.g.

“The Citizens Advice Bureau has been helping people in New Zealand for 50 years,” says Tiffany Cross, co-chairperson of Marlborough Citizens Advice.

“A lot has changed over this time, especially with more and more things moving online, but being able to get help in-person from your local CAB is more valued than ever.

“At Marlborough Citizens Advice we’re here for you, whether you want to talk to someone face-to-face/kanohi ki te kanohi, call us on the phone or contact us online – you will get help from a person in your community, not a robot or someone from the other side of the world. You won’t need a login or password to talk to us,” she says.

While the internet has made some things easier, the experience of the CAB is that there are lots of people who struggle to do things online.

“There are many barriers, and these aren’t just about having access to a computer or knowing how to open a new tab on a web browser,” Tiffany says. “Sometimes it’s an issue of language or disability or a lack of confidence, but it’s often just about wanting to talk to another human being.”

Some real examples are: Nicholas came in for help setting up a RealMe account. He wanted to renew his passport online. He has a mobile phone and tablet at home but doesn’t want to complete such a detailed process on a small screen.

We worked together on the computer and successfully completed the passport renewal form. Nicholas received a confirmation email from DIA immediately afterwards.

Maureen had completed her application for national superannuation and wanted it checked out, as well as her KiwiSaver withdrawal. She has no home computer and a lack of confidence in using a public access one at the library. We checked through her

paperwork and explained what needed to be certified and where signatures needed to be witnessed and we photocopied her ID documents for her.

“People come to us because they need and value the support of another person,” Tiffany says. It’s this humanness of the CAB service and its accessibility to the public that is being celebrated this year during the CAB’s annual Awareness Week.

Surviving against the odds Blenheim hosted an inspiring speaker, cancer survivor David Downs, during a function last week sponsored by Grant Baxter of Bayleys Marlborough.

David’s story of being cured thanks to ground-breaking research was well received by those who attended, and he spoke with reporter Celeste Alexander about how he survived against the odds.

In January 2017, David received the news that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 48-years-old and decided to take the next 12 months off from his career to have treatment.

Sadly after completing 12 rounds of chemotherapy David heard the news no-one wants to hear. The treatment hadn’t been successful and he was terminal, with only 12months or less to live.

“It was a tough time,” he says. But I was very public about being sick as my way of coping so my journey became well known.”

Around the same time an experimental clinical trial was being run by the Harvard Medical School in Boston, for a new type of cancer treatment called CAR T-cell therapy.

David applied and was one of 180 people accepted.

CAR T-cell (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) therapy has been dubbed the revolutionary new approach to fighting cancer.

It is an emerging form of cancer treatment which has recently been licensed in Australia, the United States and Europe to treat patients with certain types of lymphoma and leukaemia.

David had T-cells extracted from his blood which were genetically modified and injected back into his body.

Close to a month later David had scans and a blood test which confirmed that there was no sign of cancer. He was in complete remission!

“Normally there are three options for cancer treatment,” David says.

“There’s surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. So for me to be able to stand here today and say the word ‘cured’, is absolutely unbelievable.”

David travelled back to Boston three weeks ago for a checkup – his twelfth and final visit. It was there that he received the news he was cured.

“I can now officially call myself cancer free!”

Asked how it felt to hear those words, David says; “A mixture of emotions”.

“I feel utter relief along with a lot of sadness and a bit of guilt,” he says. “I know there were lots of people who did not get the same results as I did.”

“I can now officially call myself cancer free!”

With this in mind David is now a patient’s advocate and speaks to people who contact him, or who have been put in touch with him via their oncologists.

“I share my own experiences with cancer. There’s so many little things that fall outside of the medical stuff that doctors can’t help with… that’s how I help people,” he says.

Because of how public he was throughout his cancer and treatment journey he was contacted by the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in New Zealand, inviting him to visit them.

Based in Wellington, the institute is developing and trialling a third generation CAR T-cell therapy as well as researching how it can extend to other cancers. The first phase of a trial has commenced.

This is hugely exciting for David who is now an ambassador for

the Malaghan Institute, helping to raise awareness of this ground breaking research.

“When I was sick the only option I had for this therapy was to go overseas. But now the Malaghan Institute is improving on the therapy – globally this is huge and taking place in NZ which is exciting.

“So I’m proud to be their ambassador and to promote this

incredible work… I mean, it saved my life!”

David has written a book about his cancer journey titled ‘A Mild Touch of the Cancer’, and he has provided one copy to the Sun for a giveaway competition.

Kindy fundraises for butterfly enclosure

Dinosaurs, firemen, unicorns and even a medieval knight were just some of the creative costumes worn by children of Seymour Kindergarten on Thursday night for it’s annual Trike-a-thon.

The kindergarten has around 50 families registered who turned up

to the event with decorated bikes and scooters to not only have fun, but to help fundraise for a butterfly enclosure.

Head teacher, Char Morison, says the goal is to raise $2000 to build a butterfly enclosure so the children can walk into and see how the caterpillars grow and transform.

“We have swan plants every-

where but because the wasps attack the eggs and caterpillars we need to bring them to protect them.

“A new butterfly enclosure would be a welcome addition to our chicken coup and worm farm,” she says.

As part of the fundraising the children had sponsorship forms for the trike-a-thon.

EVENT: Marlborough Multicultural Festival

Marlburians flocked to Pollard Park on Saturday to attend the Multicultural Festival. Numerous stalls sold almost every cuisine imaginable.

People camped out on the grass as they watched the many different performances of singing and dancing; all performed by artists of different cultures and nationalities. Finishing off the sunny afternoon, Celtic band ‘Black Velvet’ provided a rousting performance of rock and reel tunes.

The Rapaura School Country Harvest Fair provided a variety of Saturday afternoon fun for the whole family. Children had their hair sprayed crazy colours and chomped on hot chips as they ran around with their friends. How much clearance is required?

Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, trees must be kept a safe distance from power lines for public safety and to protect electricity supply.

The Regulations define the clearance requirements using two zones, the Notice Zone and Growth Limit Zone.

The Growth Limit Zone is the space around the power line where trees must not encroach at any time. The Notice Zone is one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone.

Loved and respected father-in-law of Stephen Gullery and Steve Black, and the cherished Grandad and Task Master of Jerard, Shannon, Liam, Eilish, Aden, and Neo. Great-Grandad of, and ginger-beer supplier to, Casey, Ruby B, Madison, Ruby G, (and two imminent baby girls). Gary is also a dear friend and mentor to many. Marlburians take on Golden Shears Last weekend, the national sheep shearing and woolhandling championship, Golden Shears 2020, was held in Masterton for the 60th year. Three Marlburians, Sarah Higgins, Duncan Higgins, and Angus Moore, participated in the competition and came away with an exciting range of awards.

Sarah was the winner of the Womens Invitation event and came fifth in the Young Farmers Blue Ribbon event, while Angus won the National Circuit Shearing Competition.

Country fun The sun was shining and everywhere you looked, people were enjoying the entertainment and activities at the Rai Valley A&P Show on Saturday.

Large crowds arrived throughout the day to sample some of what the country had to offer.

Giant pumpkins, old machinery,

vehicle displays, farm machinery and animals were just a few of the popular features.

For the kids, there were amusement rides and fun competitions as well as the opportunity to watch the horse and dog events.

Memories shared Fond memories from the days working at the Farmers Co-operative store were shared last Saturday evening among those who attended a reunion in Blenheim.

More than 60 people gathered at the Clubs of Marlborough’s Taylor Restaurant for a dinner, including people from out of town.

Organisers, Maree Chambers and Fay Cresswell, were thrilled with the turnout and say a great night was had.
