Lovell’s swim puts her in contention Blenheim’s Jodie Lovell, had a successful swim at the Sand to Surf 2.6km ocean event at Mt Maunganui on Saturday. Competing in the 30 to 34 age group, Lovell, 34, won her age group in a time of 41min 48secs. “There were good conditions, just a little choppy but I had a good swim,” she said. This was the third swim Lovell has completed over the summer as part of a national series. In all, six races make up the series with an individual’s top three results counting. With three completed, she will sit out the last race which will be held on the North Shore in Auckland. “I’m in a good position to get a medal,”
she said. A team of nine master swimmers from Blenheim competed at Mt Maunganui. Yasmine Gee, placed third in the 35 to 39 age group while Peter Colbert, 60, placed well in his age group and like Lovell is in contention for a series medal. Lovell said sea swim training would continue through to the middle of the month and then it would be all pool training through the winter months. Australian open water swimming Olympians took out the elite events. Surf club needs support MBC softballers By Chris Tobin The Rarangi Surf Life Saving is appealing to the Marlbrough public to get behind their attempts to secure a new inflatable rescue boat (IRB). BP, a major sponsor of surf life saving in New Zealand for many years, is running a nationwide competition among all clubs with a prize being a new IRB. The small White’s Bay based Rarangi club would desperately like to win, but they would need the support from all of Marlborough. “We can’t compete against the likes of the Pihas which have hundreds of members,” club member Mark Lucas said. “The only way we can compete is to get everyone in town and Marlborough to vote for us.” He said the club had two IRBs but one was old and in need of replacement. A fully fitted boat costs $25,000. “We’re there for White’s Bay but the boats are also available to the New Zealand police for marine rescue.” BP is giving a new IRB to the club that receives the most online votes. The competition closes at the end of the month. To help Rarangi the public can vote at www. bpsurflifesaving.co.nz

Volleyballers show improvement By Alyn Meiklejohn There has been so much improvement among the young Marlborough Volleyballers competing in the Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition over the last few weeks. Almost all the serves are starting to get over the net and some great setting and digging is starting to be seen. Some games are getting close in scores and time ran out in a few games. Improvement was especially true with newcomers in the year 5/6 section 1 grade. Renwick Blockers played Fairhall Firebirds with a close first set of 23-25 to Fairhall. In the second set Renwick had warmed up and most of their serves went over the net and made it a set apiece with a score of 25-19. With time up in the third set and a score of 14-14, the teams were told it was the first to 19.
Renwick was the team to get there with a close 19-17 set score. Subway Fair Play Team of the Week was awarded to St Mary’s Spikers from the Premier Grade. This team is new to the Premier Grade and has shown great team work .
