and shops is a huge draw card for us all. Sadly this year we were so disappointed to arrive and see a few markets (not the originals) scattered in two points, no atmosphere, and no reason to wander down the main street. There has been talk we should change destinations and head to another festival, as the festival weekend no longer had the atmosphere of celebration. On a positive note the girls left the town with money in their pockets as their favourite stalls were nowhere to be seen. Many of us did not even leave the square and wander down the street, for the first time in 20 years I reflected that I did not go into the chemist to explore all their goodies in the sale bins. I could get each and every girl to write a letter to the editor and their message would be BRING BACK THE FRIDAY MARKETS OF THE FESTIVAL why change something that was such a drawcard
to those travelling into Blenheim for the Festival. Years gone by it was known as Blenheim Festival Weekend, I think those who decided to change something that was so fantastic should take a serious look at their decision. On the bright note the Sunday was a fabulous day and the girls spent their money that they didn’t spend at the markets, so thank you Bladen, No.1, Geisens, Gourmet Collection, Wither Hills, and Woodbourne Tavern, you did a fabulous job welcoming the Girls on Tour. You’re welcome to contact each and every Girl on Tour who travelled as they would simply all send the same message; BRING BACK THE FRIDAY MARKETS FOR THE WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL. Letters to the editor
Missed the market Dear Ed, This year was Girls on Tour 25th anniversary travelling to Blenheim for the Blenheim Wine & Food Festival. Up to 30 ladies meet once a year to make the journey and celebrate true friendship. Travelling as movie stars, and many not knowing each other’s real identity this is a once a year time for us all just to be girls and have fun together. This year things changed and the journey was a lot longer as we could no longer travel by train due to the earthquakes, travelling by coach through the centre of the south island was a very long trip. About 18 years ago we changed the travel day to Blenheim from Friday to the Thursday. This change was made so we could enjoy the fantastic Street Markets on the Friday before the festival. We save weekly for our trip and the anticipation of heading to the market to listen to the music, wonder the main street browsing the markets

Set Nets Dear Ed, The practice of set nets in the Diversion and lower Wairau Rivers should require close monitoring as salmon are currently running in upstream. The Ministry for Primary Industries has been seen once or twice but where is Fish and Game who should have
Snail Mail
Dear Ed, Recently a letter posted in Picton was delivered to my PO Box in Blenheim three days later. Now the travel time by vehicle Picton to Blenheim is say 30 minutes or less. That half hour relative to say two days (48 hours) means my letter could’ve been delivered 100 times. NZ Post have given a new meaning to the term ‘snail mail’. I presume the letter posted in Picton went to Christchurch under NZ Post’s weird logic of speed, then back to Blenheim? However NZ Post is a State Owned Enterprise where profit comes before service to the public. It also underlines what a disaster it has been to turn public service operations into SOEs.
real concerns about trout and salmon potentially being caught in the set net. I have not seen Fish and Game anywhere except asking kahawai fishermen for their trout licence. Eh? Kahawai Ken Blenheim
No wonder mail business for NZ Post has fallen. Julius Sneezer Blenheim Response: Our target is to deliver at least 95% of standard mail within three working days of it being posted (we assume your correspondent is referring to standard mail). We moved to this standard because the volume of letters being posted has halved over the last decade. Every week that goes by, 1 million fewer letters are posted and we have to redesign how we deliver because we can’t afford to have nearly-empty vans driving around.
