Fish kit for schools By Cathie Bell Marlborough Sounds salmon farmer New Zealand King Salmon has produced a school education kit for primary schools to teach children about aquaculture. The company’s general manager aquaculture Mark Preece gave Springlands School principal Gaylene Beattie a kit on Wednesday afternoon. It is being distributed to all Marlborough primary schools. Mark says the kit contains a range of easy-to-use classroom activities for students, and will help teachers, students and par-

ents understand about king salmon, how salmon is farmed in Marlborough, the benefits of salmon as a high value health food, and the career opportunities that exist within aquaculture. The company says the kit was developed in consultation with Marlborough teachers, with input from science teacher Melynda Bentley, in recognition of the region’s aquaculture industry. “Marlborough is a unique place in which aquaculture, viticulture, tourism and aviation play a major role in the economy.” Each task has links with the New Zealand Curriculum, with

the major focus on science (specifically the nature of science learning area) and social studies. Each activity is also linked to one or more of the key competencies. There is no set order in which activities need to be completed, you simply choose the activities suitable to your class. Activities can be done as a whole class, in groups or individually. Mark says the company has staff available to talk to students about their work as well. Gaylene says the kit could come in handy when students are learning about water and its uses. Springlands School principal Gaylene Beattie receives a resource kit from NZ King Salmon’s Mark Preece.

Labour’s Kaikoura candidate Janette Walker says Marlborough has a housing crisis. She says Marlborough has the second longest wait time for people on the social housing register and the numbers are increasing weekly. “I should know, because I deal with these stressed families every day and have written countless letters to Housing NZ advocating for these people.”

Labour MPs invite you to a public meeting about Marlborough’s housing crisis.
