Fresh from an impressive sixth Place in Starling Class at the Sir Peter Blake Regatta in Auckland, Callum Radford proved his helmsmanship skills yet again by scooping up first place in the South Island Starling Champs held recently at Naval Point Yacht Club in his boat “Lethal Weapon”. Callum and four other Queen Charlotte Yacht Club starling sailors travelled south to the Championships sailed in Lyttleton Harbour in light to moderate winds. In a field of 21 yachts, the five youth sailors, who have all come up through the ranks of Optimist sailing at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, competed well in the two day regatta. Callum finished the regatta four points ahead of his nearest rival, with Nick Gardiner earning a worthy fourth place after a consistent performance, Iolo Adams coming in at sixth, Nico van Beek, ninth and Alice Overend sailing in her Starling for only the third time coming in at 15th after five completed races. Now in his third season sailing starling, Callum’s expertise in reading wind shifts and tides, helped him stay at the front on the pack and fend off challengers proving that he and his boat truly are a Lethal Weapon in sailing. Other sailors travelled from as far afield as Wanaka and Timaru to attend the championships.
