Bruins sectional recap (Elkhart Truth, Sunday, Oct. 10) While every member of the Bethany Christian soccer team was thrilled by their sectional title win over Wawasee on Saturday, junior Drew Sylvester had extra reasons to smile. Sylvester not only scored the game's only goal with 16:19 remaining in regulation, but he's also in his first year at Bethany after transferring from Wawasee. "This is just an awesome feeling," Sylvester said with a huge smile. "Being a sectional champion is pretty amazing." It looked like the game was headed for overtime or penalty kicks, as neither team was able to get much going offensively. Wawasee's strong defense and goalie Andre Champoux was outstanding, keeping the ball away from the Bruins' one-two punch of Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Josh Stoltzfus. Meanwhile, Wawasee's Cody Blunk, who scored the only goal in the Warriors' 1-0 victory over Goshen on Thursday, was unable to use his speed to get away from the Bruins' defense. "I don't think we did a very good job of getting Cody the ball in a position to run," Wawasee coach Peter Lucht said. "With the pressure up tonight, I don't think we were as disciplined as we've been for most of the year." Sylvester finally got the Bruins on the board in the game's 64th minute, as he fought hard for the ball in the Warriors' zone then drilled a left-footed shot past Champoux for the game's only goal.

"Wawasee's defense is very physical and very well coached," Sylvester said. "They did a great job tonight and really made us earn the win." Now trailing 1-0, Wawasee ramped up its offensive effort, but they were unable to put a mark on the scoreboard. In fact, the Warriors had just one shot on goal in the game. "I thought in the first half we kind of played into their hands by trying to take the ball right into the middle of their defense," Bruins' coach Hank Willems said. "But in the second half we did a much better job of mixing things up and getting our guys behind their defense a little." Bethany's depth also played a role, as Willems was able to substitute freely during the game, often changing three or four players at a time. "I'm just so proud of these kids," Willems said. "We thought coming into the season that we could be pretty good, but at one point, we were just 4-3. But since they, we discovered who we are as a team and we've played very well."

Raiders sectional recap (Elkhart Truth, Sunday, Oct. 10) Brazilian exchange student Matheus DePaula scored three goals and contributed an assist Saturday night, after a two-goal performance during the day, as Northridge won the Westview Sectional boys soccer tournament. DePaula helped the Raiders (154-2) blank Howe Military 7-0 in the championship match after a 6-0 semifinal victory against Westview. "We seem to be clicking pretty well," said Raiders coach Todd Woodworth. "We're doing a good job of making that extra person and finding the open person. Coming into today, before DePaula's big day, we we're pretty well-balanced (in scoring). We've certainly spread it around."
