GM REPORT

CLUB UPDATE

MARK HENNELLY / GENERAL MANAGER OUR 40TH BIRTHDAY YEAR IS COMING TO A CLOSE, and like it is for so many businesses and families it’s time for us to get ready for the Christmas rush. We are very grateful to all the business and social groups choosing to hold their Christmas work parties at Brothers, celebrating the pending festive season with mates. I personally love this time of year. There are so many people to catch up with to exchange tall stories about days gone by and to make bold promises for New Year’s resolutions. I am pleased to report that the club has again been a very active supporter of the local community in 2014 with many sporting, charitable and community organisations benefiting. A notable example was our recently held Carols on the Green which we jointly hosted with St Edmunds College. It’s a tradition that continues to grow each year and we’re very proud of the support we receive from our members with funds raised going to local families in need through the Ipswich Branch of St Vincent de Paul. Don’t forget the Club will be open throughout the holiday period with the exception of Christmas Day itself. This year, we’ve introduced a whole new range of promotions and giveaways as part of our Summer Series including a holiday to Hamilton Island which we’ll be giving away on Boxing Day. There’s more about that elsewhere in the Bulletin. New Year’s Eve is set to be another big night with Rock Steady getting the party started in

the O Bar and Diva Demolition looking after business in the Sports Bar. I can’t think of a better way to end the year on a high. I’m also looking forward to the Australia Day weekend. Starting on the Saturday, we’re hosting one of the Ipswich Council’s free movies in the park out on the main field. It promises to be a great night for families so grab a picnic blanket and come along to see Turbo. Then we kick off a huge celebration with two days of free Australian-themed entertainment. Solid Rock get things started on the Sunday night playing a set list that includes the who’s who of Aussie Rock from the last 40 years. Then on Monday afternoon, we’re putting on three shows in one with the Oz-Roxx Show paying tribute to the Angels, Hoodoo Gurus and Powderfinger. If you’re looking for me, I’ll be checking out the Aussie-themed specials in the Brasserie and Coffee Shop and making sure the beer stays cold in the Sports Bar. On behalf of management and staff, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the past year and wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy festive season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you in 2015! Mark

BOARD REPORT /05 FROM THE BOARD GREG WALSH / CHAIRMAN

ALMOST CHRISTMAS ALREADY! WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? The nature of producing the Bulletin in its current format means I’m writing this column well before our AGM which is scheduled to be held on the 30th of November; but there is a good chance you are reading it afterwards. I’m also writing before we hold our major strategic planning workshop at which the Board and Senior Managers will revisit and redevelop the roadmap for the Club’s medium and longer term future. But again, by now this has also happened and we would be at the beginning stages of implementing what I’m sure will have been some very exciting ideas. It’s just a shame that I can’t yet tell you what exactly they might be. I’d also love to be able to report on the Carols on the Green held on November 14 in partnership with St Edmund’s College. No doubt it was another huge success and raised a lot of money for St Vincent de Paul Ipswich. But from where I’m writing, more than three weeks before the event, I can only assume that to be the case. Looking forward, there are some changes planned for the Bulletin that will go some of the way to solving this problem. Firstly, it will no longer be mailed out. Instead, physical copies will only be available for collection at the Club. Electronic versions will also be available online with links provided through our website, via our eNewsletter and social media such as Facebook.

Much of this is already happening. The key difference is we will no longer be locked into deadlines that are beyond our control and it will be easier for us to make changes or additions at shorter notice. This will take the pressure off some of our contributors who currently have to gaze into their crystal ball and guess what might be happening many weeks in the future. For our Members, it means the content should be more timely and relevant. Of course, a lot of work goes into this publication and we still won’t be able to produce it overnight. So we are exploring additional ways that we can keep our Members up to date with what is going on around the club. Without question, various forms of digital media will increasingly play a significant role in achieving this outcome. If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend you provide us with an email address and like us on Facebook to ensure you receive the most current information. Expect us to continue to be playing with the formula over the next twelve months as we attempt to make the best use of our available resources for the benefit of our members. On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas. May you retain all of the joy and none of the calories heading into the New Year. See you at the club! Greg

BROTHERS CRICKET The time has flown and cricket season is nearly half over. Brothers has fielded 3 senior and 6 junior teams in the competition this year; its 65th year in the Ipswich and West Moreton Cricket Association. The highlight of the first half of the season has been the in2Cricket program which has been running since October. 22 kids started the program and spent 7 Friday nights learning the basics of cricket. You would have seen them running around outside the club in their yellow shirts swinging bats and throwing a few balls. It’s a great concept and special thanks goes to our Junior Coordinator Shaun Madson and senior players including Keegan Martin, Steven Lewis and Daniel Goss who make an appearance each week to help out. At the time of writing this report the senior team were yet to register a win but time is early in the season as we adjust for some new players. We welcomed a number of new seniors to the club this year and that coupled with the large junior base developing, we have a good platform for the club in the future. Watch this space for more news in the future about a new home base for Brothers cricket.

A special thanks again to our sponsors this year. Our new training shirts have arrived and they look great. Sponsors include: Brothers Leagues Club, GJ Walsh and Co, Cash Converters, Gabba Sporting Products, Choices Flooring, Diggit, Better Buy Meats, Capral Aluminium, Walker Pender Group and Magical Memorabilia. Please support the business that support our club. Keep an eye out for the Christmas Raffle as well; some great prizes perfect for a Christmas gift.

BROTHERS JUNIORS As the festive season hit us, I’d like to thank all our 2015 coaches, managers, FAOs, league safes, ball boys, time keepers and whoever helped throughout 2014. Last month Brothers Juniors had their award ceremony with the night being a success. Awards winners: International coach of the year – Pat O’Doherty Mod coach of the year – Gary Perrett Mini coach of the year – Michael Honicke Rookie coach of the year – Dean Cash Kev Stoddart award – Troy Johnson Congratulations to those coaches. Last month we also had our Brothers Academy and Rising Star team play their end of year games with both sides coming out with the win. Brothers Academy travelled to Gympie to play against their

development side and won 32-16. This was a really good result and the boys bonded as a pack. We’re very proud of the efforts by all. Our Rising Star side took on a Broncos development side at Purtell Park with the boys coming away with a win 24-0. This result was a big achievement with the boys only coming together for a couple of weeks. Next year will come around very quickly. If you would like to help out the club in any way, please don’t hesitate to email or call me to arrange a job for you. Sign-on will be in early February. Looking forward to seeing you all back. For now have an enjoyable Christmas and happy New Year. Yours in league Jason Connors

IPSWICH BOWLS CLUB In the last Bulletin progress of the Club’s pennant teams was advised. The club has now finished the season with the following results. The ladies were knocked out in the semi-finals by Corinda - the eventual winners. The Division 7 men’s team came back strongly in the latter part of the season to finish third. In the play off for a position in the final they defeated Graceville, but unfortunately went down to Sunnybank in the final to finish creditable runners up.

The Division 4 men’s team defeated Corinda in the play off for the final where they took on the previously undefeated Ipswich United Services. Good play on the day resulted in Ipswich winning 67 to 61 to take the Division 4 pennant title. The team has been invited to take part in the South East Queensland District Bowls Association champions event at Coolum in November, representing Cunningham District against other district Division 4 winners.

BROTHERS SOCIAL BOWLS We at Brother Bowls are approaching the end of another good year, with our final away trip to McLeay Island (Sunday, 26th October, 2014). We are travelling with 45 members and we will be playing ten rinks of four bowlers. We are also culminating our year with our “Weekend Away”. This year we are tripping to Ballina Bowls Club on Saturday, 15th November. We will stay overnight and go to Kingscliffe Bowls Club on Sunday, 16th November. We also celebrate our breakup for the

year at Brothers Leagues club, Function Room for our annual Xmas Party on 6th December. So if anyone is wishing to play bowls and enjoy good company, please contact our Games Director, Andrew Orr at our Brothers Social Bowls email address brothersbowls@gmail.com. KINDRED CLUBS

CYMS ST. EDMUNDS SWIMMING It has been a fantastic couple of months for the swim club since returning for the new season which began in October. Our membership has risen steadily in the last couple of years and this year is no exception with most of our swimmers returning. Most pleasing is the number of new faces on pool deck. For those interested, it is never too late to sign up. $120 gets you membership which includes free entry to the pool on club nights, a lucky swimmer draw every week, a fully stocked canteen, raffles and the best hamburgers in Ipswich. Everyone is welcome and all levels of swimming are catered for. For more information or to download a registration form, go to cymsstedmunds.com.au or you can ring Greg on 32015070 or Kerri on 32015500. Our usual Tuesday club nights will be having a break during the December and January school holidays with the last club night of the year being December 2 with a return date of January 27. It will then be all systems go every Tuesday night till the end of term 1. Training will continue throughout the holidays and this is a great opportunity to work off the Christmas pudding. On the carnival front there is no bigger event in the state than the Queensland Titles which are being held at Chandler Aquatic Centre from the 13th till the 19th of December. All of our champs have been

attending various carnivals over the past couple of months in order to record that elusive qualifying time in order to represent our great club at this major event. We congratulate these swimmers and acknowledge the hard work that they have put in over the past months and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our Head Coach, Stephen Critoph and assistant coach, Brad Thurlow who have left no stone unturned to get them performing at their peak. After this carnival the swimmers will have a well deserved Christmas break but will be back in full training in early January with an eye on the South Australian Titles which are held later that month. The club will be sending a squad of 13 to this event. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate these swimmers on the fundraising efforts they have put in to offset the costs associated with this assault on Adelaide. It promises to be a great trip and I will report on their results in both the Qld and S.A. Titles in the next edition. In closing, the Swim Club would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all in 2015. Greg Roche President

KINDRED CLUBS /23 BROTHERS OLD BOYS & SUPPORTERS Hi Everyone, Just a quick recap of our year before we all settle in to the festive season. BOBS have finished the year once again in a strong financial position which gives us the opportunity to revisit some of our goals in the New Year. Hopefully we will be able to proceed with another shelter around the main playing area, possibly the hill behind the in goal area at the Can Bar end.

I would like to make special mention of all our wonderful sponsors who get behind us each year and make it so much easier to achieve our goals each year, a huge THANK YOU. Brothers Leagues Club XXXX Schweppes G J Walsh & Co

It was great to be able to celebrate the Centenary Year for Brothers Football Club along with the 40th anniversary of our Leagues Club with a gala dinner in the Function Room with some excellent guest speakers and some very distinguished guests and attendees. It was exciting to be a part of the celebrations as I am sure I will be an apology for the next one. Thanks to all those who made it a great celebration.

Yalumba Wines

We introduced our weekly Bronco’s Doubles this year with great success. This can be attributed to the hard work of Blue and Ripper and of course your support by buying them each week. If you weren’t lucky enough to take home the cash this year don’t panic you will get another shot at winning next year.

Bob Vander Meer Plastering

M & P Floorcovering Specialists David Hill Carpet Laying Mallet’s Choices Kurtz Constructions Dale Automotive Services Better Buy Meats Ausblue Future Skills J Thomas & Sons EET At the time of writing this we had not had our AGM so I am hoping that I can congratulate the BOBS Committee on re-election and if needed a big thanks to those who are not re nominating. It can be very challenging trying to recruit volunteers in this day and age, but I acknowledge the efforts of the people who continue to turn up each week and give their time and energy as without these people we wouldn’t have what we have today. So my parting words for the year are “Don’t sit back and wait to be asked, put your hand up and help”. Have a great festive season and we look forward to sharing an ale or two in the New Year. JOKE FOR FRANK

WILL YOU LIVE TO SEE 85? Here’s something to think about... I recently picked a new GP. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age (I’ve just reached 60). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 85?’ He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor? ‘Oh not much grog these days and don’t smoke’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’ Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks, fatty roasts and barbecued ribs? ‘I said, ‘Not much.... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’ ‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, surfing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said. He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said... He looked at me and said, ‘Then, why on earth do you want to live to 85?

‘OLD’ IS WHEN... ...your sweetie says,‘Let’s go upstairs and make love,’ and you answer, ‘Pick one; I can’t do both!’ ...you are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police. ...an ‘all nighter’ means not getting up to use the bathroom. ...you’re not sure if these are facts or jokes.
