December 2016 Dear Friar Fans, Families and Visitors; Welcome to the campus of Bishop Lynch High School and thank you for purchasing this copy of the 2016-2017 Bishop Lynch Winter Sports Media Guide. Our basketball, soccer, wrestling and powerlifting programs are showcased here and the dedication of our student-athletes and coaches is certain to inspire and excite. Each of these winter programs is poised to present our school with an opportunity to spread the message about the mission of Bishop Lynch to new heights. Together we join these coaches and student athletes on their quest for new levels of excellence in athleticism, sportsmanship, and unity. Pope Francis, in speaking about the importance of athletics, points out that “Every sportive discipline has its value, not only social or physical, but also moral, since it offers the possibility to people, especially children and youth, to grow in balance, self-control, sacrifice and loyalty to others. As president, I am especially proud of the superior athletic programs at Bishop Lynch and their importance to our mission as we challenge this generation of young people to strive for excellence, seek truth and work for justice. Thank you for being a partner in this mission of excellence in athletics. Together we accept the challenge as fans to support all our teams in this spirit of Christ-like competition and fellowship! Enjoy the competition and GO FRIARS! #Together Sincerely yours in Christ,

Chris Rebuck President

Alma Mater

March Friars, march down the field! March Friars, march men of steel! We conquer our foes and wield A fearless strength that reveals Our loyal men never yield! Fight Friars, fight to the end! Fight Friars, fight ‘til we win! Fight for our colors, black and white And for Lynch and for victory!

We salute Bishop Lynch with our voices now we raise. As we bring Thee a tribute in this our song of praise. Thy banners unfurl, Thy glory proclaim; and we shall ever loyal be who proudly hail thy name. Then we come, Alma Mater, paying homage at Thy door. May we always be worthy to serve Thee evermore.

August 2016

Dear Friar Friends, Welcome to another school year and Friar athletics season. This year should be an exciting year in all of our sports! All of our athletes had a great summer in developing and growing, and we are excited about the 2016-17 athletic year. Our teams are showing great promise and we are expecting great things from all of them this year. We encourage you to support our athletic program by joining our Athletic Booster Club and attending meetings which are held on the first Monday of each month at 7 pm in the school Bistro. Athletic Boosters help support athletic events and facilities through membership, sponsorships and the Annual Bishop Lynch Golf and Tennis Classic. We thank you for your dedicated support and wonderful school spirit which makes Bishop Lynch an unparalleled success among other schools in Texas. We also welcome our guests from around the state to our campus today. We expect that all games display good sportsmanship and we pray that the athletes may compete free of injury. “Competition with Honor” is the TAPPS motto, and Jesus Christ is the reason for our school! Good luck to all our teams and thank you for playing an important part in the lives of our athletes and the traditions of Bishop Lynch High School.

Sincerely,

Andy Zihlman ‘72 Athletic Director

Andy Zihlman starts his 37th year as the Lady Friars head coach and during his tenure, he has amassed 24 state titles and his teams hold the national record for consecutive state titles and overall wins. Zihlman earned his 900th career win in 2015 and has a career record of 927-305. Zihlman, who was recognized as the 2008 WBCA/Russell National High School Coach of the Year, was named the 2009 Dallas Morning News High School Coach of the Year and has been named the Texas Association Basketball Coaches (TABC) Private School Coach of the Year. In 2011, he was inducted into the Texas Private School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Coach Taylor begins her 18th year as assistant varsity coach. She attended LaPoynor High School where she earned All-District and All-Region honors for 4 years. She attended Trinity Valley Community College from 1991-93 where she earned All-Region honors both years. She was also named to the All-Region Academic Team both years. From Trinity Valley, she continued her career at the University of North Texas, where she served as team captain. Coach Taylor graduated from UNT in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Biology. She is a member of the Bishop Lynch Science Department staff and teaches Biology.

paul gardner varsity assistant • Years at BL: 2nd • High School: A&M Consolidated High School • College: Austin College • First album CD purchased: Three Dog Night • Favorite movie(s): The Good, The Bad and The Ugly • “Go-to” social media: Facebook Paul Gardner has 31 years coaching experience coaching with Class 4A and 5A teams in the University Interscholastic League (UIL). He coached at North Mesquite for 13 years where, in 2005, his team went 28-7 and made it to the 5A regional quarterfinals. He also coached at Forney High School for five years, Poteet High School for three years and Mesquite High School for nine years. Gardner “retired” from teaching and coaching in 2012. Not quite ready to fully retire, he worked for a staffing company for two years where he realized he missed teaching and took a teaching job at Richland College. His passion for teaching and coaching wouldn’t go away, and when Coach Zihlman called him about teaching at BL and coaching in his program, he jumped at the chance. Coach Gardner just happens to be married to BL alum Cindy Ewaniak Gardner (BL ‘78).

michelle longoria jv coach • Years at BL: 21st • High School: Lake Highlands High School • College: University of North Texas • First album purchased: Barry Manilow Live • Favorite movie(s): The Shawshank Redemption • “Go-to” social media: Facebook Coach Michele Longoria is the Lady Friars JV head coach and is in her 21st year on the coaching staff. Longoria played for Zihlman in his first year as the JV girls basketball coach at BL in 1980. Longoria went on to graduate from Lake Highlands, where she earned all-district honors as well as the LHHS Sportsmanship Award her senior year. Longoria played collegiately for both TCU and UNT, where she was on the 1986 Lady Eagles Southland Conference championship team. Michele also serves as the Lady Friar Summer Camp coordinator for the last 18 years. Coach Longoria is the BLHS Student Communications Adviser, teaching Broadcast Journalism I, II and III, as well as print journalism and graphic design for yearbook. Coach Longoria has three children. Reese is a BL 2016 graduate and is headed for the Marines in March 2017. Her daughter Clare, 16, is a current BL junior and her son Nicholas is 11 and a sixth-grader at St. Pius X Catholic School.

nikki nester freshman coach • Years at BL: 4th • High School: Bishop Lynch High School (‘08) • College: Southeastern Oklahoma State University • First album CD purchased: Spice Girls • Favorite movie(s): Comedies • “Go-to” social media: Snapchat

Freshman coach and former Lady Friar, Nikki Nester, is in her fourth year coaching, but has been a part of the Bishop Lynch family and community her entire life. Her father is BL’s head baseball coach Clayton Nester, BL’84. Clayton — who has been on the faculty and coaching staff for 21 years — also coached the JV Lady Friars basketball team for two years, in addition to coaching summer league teams for seven years. So, literally, Nikki has been in the BL gym since before she could walk. Early in her freshman year, Nikki was moved up when food poisoning hit all but four varsity players. Coach Zihlman immediately recognized that she was capable of playing at the varsity level and would be an integral part of the teams’ success. Nikki has the honor of earning four TAPPS state championship rings from 2005-08. Nester went on to have a very successful collegiate career at Southeastern Oklahoma from 2008-11.

tom trautman head coach • Years at BL: 2nd • High School: Jesuit College Prep • College: Southern Methodist University • First album CD purchased: U2 • Favorite movie(s): Star Wars, Gladiator Tom Trautman comes to Bishop Lynch having coached the most successful wrestling feeder programs in the area- the Highland Park Scots and Dallas Dynamite. In his time in those programs he has worked to develop more than 100 state champions including current wrestlers at more than 20 area high schools. Tom began his coaching career in 1992 when he was approached by Highland Park Coach Tim Marzuola at an SMU wrestling tournament. Tom was asked to assist Marzuola with his feeder program and in his first year as a coach he developed 6 state champions, 5 more than any previous year at Highland Park. Tom had planned on helping his alma mater, Jesuit, to grow their program as he feels recruiting is one of his strengths as a coach, but when his son decided to row instead of wrestle it allowed Tom to put on the black and white and become a Friar. Tom says his best recruiting job ever was when he landed Bryan Ashford as an assistant coach. Tom is also a college and high school football official of 25 years, and the former president and vice president of the Dallas Football Officials Chapter. Tom is married to Liz and is the proud father of Drew (a junior at Jesuit).

Bryan Ashford assistant coach • Years at BL: 2nd • High School: Richardson High School • College: Texas Tech University • First album CD purchased: Three Dog Night • Favorite movie(s): Jeremiah Johnson

Bryan Ashford has coached high school wrestling in Texas for 16 years. During that time he has been the head coach for Rockwall HS, Woodrow Wilson, Episcopal School of Dallas and Austin Crockett. He won 3 district championships, 2 regional championships, and was state runner-up once. Bryan started the wrestling programs from nothing at ESD and Woodrow Wilson. Bryan has also coached successful freestyle and greco wrestling programs producing many state champions, including Coach Trautman’s son, Drew. Bryan was ecstatic when Coach Trautman asked him to join him at Bishop Lynch to reinvigorate the program and add to its impressive history. He’s thankful to the faculty, staff and Fans for all of their support for the wrestling team. Bryan and his wife, Micah, are the proud parents of daughters Addie and Annalee.
