Char-Lan High Lacrosse Team: From Beginners to Champions! By Molly Kett

E

arlier this spring, Char-Lan High School started up their very first lacrosse team, coached by Bill Roundpoint and supervised by teacher Sandy McDonald. The players’ lacrosse talents varied, with some players knowing the game well and others who had never played a single game. It wasn’t easy, but the team has grown tremendously through the season, from beginners to tournament champions. On May 17th at the Kenner Lacrosse Tournament in Peterborough, CharLan’s lacrosse team came home the divisional champions, winning all four games played.

One of the team’s captains, Aodin McDonell, is just as excited about the team’s success. “A few buddies got together hoping we could start a lacrosse team at the school,” says McDonell. “We have a few box lacrosse players so we figured why not try field. We started out with a

fresh team, new to the rules and now we’re winning games! We’ve come together and it shows.”

Continued from page 8 uppercut. George Foreman –I like to tell people that getting hit by George was like getting hit by a Mack truck at 50mph, and that was just his jab. Q – What was the biggest disappointment during your career? A – Seeing Ernie Terrell get the decision in our WBA title fight, one that I know I won. Terrell was a Chicago fighter whose career was controlled by the mob. The referee Sammy Luftspring and the three judges were muscled and threatened beforehand. They even got to my manager Irving Ungerman. What other result could I expect? Q – You have had your share of questionable and controversial decisions. What advice would you have for Tony Luis following his

recent “loss” in Liverpool? A – The British Boxing Commission looks after its own. One of my greatest regrets is never getting a shot at the Commonwealth Title. For fifteen years I was the number one contender and tried to get a fight with champion Henry Cooper but was always rebuffed by the Brits. I was in England for a fight, talked with Cooper’s manager Jim Wicks and asked about a fight with Cooper. Wicks said “Henry doesn’t even want to meet you socially”. My advice to Tony is to move forward, do the roadwork, hit the bag, train hard and always be in shape. That level of conditioning is needed when the fight goes into the late rounds. Train hard, be the best you can possibly be and fulfill your potential.

As their season comes to a close, the Char-Lan High School’s brand new lacrosse team is thrilled to be racking up the wins and the students plan to play again next year.

Sandy McDonald, teacher supervisor, is extremely impressed by the team’s progress and improvement. “They have improved immensely, from some never playing before, to others not having a clue what the rules are, and now they’re winning tournaments,” says McDonald.
