The Great Book of Monster Legends Stories and Myths from around the World Tea Orsi

The Great Book of Monster Legends is a fun introduction to mythical creatures from all over the world! Readers are guided by two girls, Erin and Nora, who found their grandfather’s old notebook in the attic. He was a monster expert, and the notebooks are filled with his research. But his research is incomplete, so they take up where he left off investigating monsters across the globe. They start in North America where the well-known Bigfoot has been sighted and then travel to Scotland to find the Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie. Then they continue their trek in search of monsters.

MEDUSA Medusa has a pair of golden wings, bronze claws, and big boar tusks instead of teeth. According to legend, Medusa is the daughter of two sea gods and has two sisters who, like her, have the power of petrifying gaze. Here we are, ready to introduce you to monstrous (but also famous) creature that, no doubt, you have heard about many, many times before: Medusa, Gorgon! Yes, that’s right, an unmistakable monster, the star of countless stories, paintings, and legends. Fortunately, we’ve never come across her, but Grandpa has written valuable tip on these pages: to face Gorgon without putting yourself in danger, you’ll need a nice pair of sunglasses with really dark lenses. Why? Oh, oops! We forgot to tell you what Medusa’s power is: anyone who looks into her eyes will be turned into... stone! Yikes! Greece

Nessie sightings There are many stories and legends about her, but our grandpa focused on Nessie sightings in particular: many people over the years (and centuries) say they have encountered her. The first sighting of the mysterious Loch Ness monster dates back to 565 C.E., when an Irish monk, St. Columba, saw her in the murky, deep waters of the lake. The man’s reaction was very courageous, as he confronted Nessie and ordered her to leave. Instead of getting angry, Nessie immediately disappeared underwater, leaving him safe and sound! More recently, in 1933, hotel owners Mr. and Mrs. Spicer told the press that they had come across monstrous, dinosaur-like creature that had suddenly emerged from the lake. In fact, they even said that they had seen her come out and cross the street quietly, right in front of their car. So scary! They had nice picnic planned for that day, but they probably went straight home to tell everyone about their adventure! Ivy Leah Sky
or Weather No two fairies are alike, but according to the role we each play, we can be divided into three groups. There are fairies that care for plants and trees, like Ivy wants to do; those who look after Earth’s animals, big and small, like Leah dreams of doing some day; and those who are involved in “meteorological phenomena,” which essentially means the weather: rain, fog, snow, and so on. I’d love to become one of them! WEATHER FAIRIES are sort of like scientists. Their main job is to study why certain types of meteorological events occur and whether they’re good or bad. Sometimes, for fun, we make things bit more magical. For example, we might make rain while the sun’s out, creating rainbow. ANIMAL FAIRIES aren’t just miniature veterinarians. They’re interested in the overall well-being of creatures. isn’t enough for animals to be healthy; they should be happy too. For that reason, animal fairies never back down when it comes to pampering sad animals. are usually a bit more serene and patient than other fairies. Just like plants, they’re never in hurry. With their small, expert hands, they take care of roots, branches, and leaves, using 12 I’ve borrowed a book from the Big Tree Library that describes two of my favorite weather events: snow and rainbows. Want to know what learned from reading it? Well, when lots of snow falls, it makes any landscape even more beautiful—enchanted almost. That’s partly because we fairies have something to do with it. But science, not magic, will help you understand how snow is formed. Who doesn’t love the snow? And who doesn’t adore rainbows? We fairies can do what we do best and cast a magic spell to make sure that not single child misses rainbow as it arches over the sky! But we aren’t the ones who create rainbows. Want to learn how they’re made? Just turn the page! Meteorological Let me introduce myself in more detail. As mentioned, my name is Sky, and am, or rather, will be, a weather fairy. That means I’ll work with the rain, wind, and snow. Anything that happens in the air is my field of expertise. Everything weather-related happens for reason and has specific role in nature.

Andy looks around. “What do foxes eat?” “They snack on birds, bugs, berries, and even worms!” Andy’s dad laughs. “If the dog brings back more food than his family can eat, he buries it for later. To protect their land, they also pee on it. This is called scent marking.” 22 Many human kids don’t like to eat their veggies. Some foxes don’t either! They eat mostly meats and fruits. 12 It’s fitting that raccoons are thieves. These clever bandits even look the part. When you first see a raccoon, you may think he is wearing a disguise. “The black mask that surrounds the animal’s eyes is just dark fur, though,” Zoe explains. A surprising number of raccoons live in cities.

If Animals Could Talk

Ever wonder what animals are trying to tell us? Why not let them explain it to you? Why does your cat’s tail go up? Why do a horse’s ears go down? Does it mean they’re happy, or sad, and just what is a neigh? You’ve got the questions, and here the animals answer, so that maybe next time you’ll know exactly what they are saying to you, and to all of us.

In one place it stretches out farther than the eye can see, but it is only a few inches deep. Narrower channels and canals are up to three feet deep. The bottom is a thick layer of limestone, made from shells that have broken down and settled there. In some places, the water shimmers under the Florida sun, interrupted only by islands created by groves of trees. In others, the water peeks between clumps of saw grass. While most places in the U.S. have four seasons, the Everglades have only two: wet and dry. From December to April, the water slowly begins to recede. It is the dry season. Almost every day is sunny, with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. Less than two inches of rain falls each month. During these months, the risk of fire in the Everglades increases. We Built This City

We might take for granted our beloved cities that have always been there for us, but there was a time they did not exist at all. Discover what it took to build these cities, who lived on the land before the buildings rose, and all the types of people from all over the world who worked together to build them, from the first house to the largest skyscraper.

14 most damaged by the fire originally held rows of warehouses, small businesses, and elegant mansions. This all changed with the rebuilding. A number of larger businesses saw this burned land as the perfect chance to expand into downtown. Many built new offices there. They were creating Boston’s first financial district. Today, Boston’s financial district is a fascinating mix of old and new. It is often considered the heart of all of New England’s banking and finance. The city’s first skyscraper, the Boston Custom House Tower, was built from 1913 to 1915. Its foundation is from the original 1849 custom house. While the financial district has the historically famous Old South Meeting House and the Bell-in-Hand Tavern, both built in the mid-1700s, it also has sparkling skyscrapers, banks, condos, and stores. Standing at 496 feet tall, the Custom House Tower has columns carved from a single piece of granite from nearby Quincy. The building is supported by 3,000 wood piles driven down to the bedrock. Chapter 3 15 A Ferocious Flood On a mild January afternoon in 1919, Boston’s North End was bustling. The city was full of sounds: the clopping of horses’ hooves, he rumble of the elevated train, and the hum of countless conversations. In the background, the nearby Purity Distilling Company’s huge metal tank groaned and moaned. No one paid any attention to it. The tank had been making those sounds ever since it had been built four years earlier. At 50 feet tall and 90 feet in diameter, the tank held 2.3 million gallons of molasses. It was to be used for making alcohol for rum and in ammunition. The tank had been built quickly. A number of safety features were overlooked. Suddenly, the air was filled with a terrifying metallic screech. The half-inch-thick metal rivets holding the Purity Distilling Company’s tank together gave way. They flew through the air like shrapnel. As the sides In 1919, a flood of molasses destroyed buildings and claimed 21 lives. Fire and Flood It would be years before Mrs. O’Leary’s cow was proven innocent of the massive fire in Chicago (top). People stormed across the Randolph Street Bridge, running for their lives. Chapter Three Disaster and Recovery Just who started the Great Chicago fire? No one is quite sure. Historians know when it started: October 8, 1871. They know where it started: in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary. They even know what started it: a knocked-over lantern. But who knocked it over? For years people thought one of the O’Leary’s cows did it. Others blamed it on a thief stealing milk. One man confessed he did it while running away from an illegal card game. In more recent years, a few scientists have suggested that a meteor shower started the hay burning. In 1997, the Chicago City Council issued a resolution announcing that poor Mrs. O’Leary and her cow were innocent all along. It was just a story that a reporter for the Chicago Daily Tribune had made up for the newspaper. Regardless of how it started, the fire was one of the worst disasters in American history. It began on a windy October 8 and burned right through the heart of the city. Hot, dry weather and all the wooden buildings and sidewalks fueled the fire. One of the first buildings to burn down was the waterworks—the main water source for the fire department. To make matters worse, when the firetrucks headed out to address the fire, they went the wrong way! By the time the fire ended, more than 300 people had died. Onethird of the entire city was homeless. About 17,500 buildings burned down. A day of hard rain helped put the fire out. By then, it had 13

Peaceful Protests

Peaceful protests have once again emerged as a powerful tool for change. Here are the stories and heroes of history’s greatest protests. The colonists who said no to unfair British rule. The suffragettes’ march for the right to vote. From the Native Americans of Standing Rock to the voices of Black Lives Matter, these are true tales of courage that continue to inspire.

On May 2, 1964, one thousand students marched through New York City to the United Nations. Another 700 students marched through San Francisco. Smaller demonstrations were held in Boston, Madison (Wisconsin), and Seattle. The “May 2nd Movement” helped spread the word about the Vietnam War to thousands more students. Many considered this the rst major student protest march. The Free Speech Movement In the fall of 1964, University of California (UC) at Berkeley students returned to campus. Many of them had done civil rights work all summer. Students in the Mississippi Freedom Summer program helped register black people to vote. They wanted to continue their political activities at school. 14 CHAPTER TWO e Free Speech Movement began at the University of California, Berkeley, in the fall of 1964. Voices for Peace Book updated.indd 14 University administrators stopped the students from using the campus for political speeches. Students felt that their rights to free speech and academic freedom were being violated, so they formed the Free Speech Movement (FSM). This organization was a combination of civil rights activists and antiwar crusaders. They started out protesting against the administration’s ban on campus political activities. Then they organized debates, protests, sit-ins, and “teach-ins” on campuses across the country. At these teach-ins, students and teachers talked about the politics, current activity, and numbers of people injured and killed in the Vietnam War. The March on Washington In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson escalated the war by sending an additional 175,000 combat troops into Vietnam.6 The SDS responded. Its March on Washington to End the War in Vietnam was the largest peace 15 Hundreds of demonstrators protested outside the President’s Office in Sproul Hall in Berkeley. The students demanded to be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights to free speech on campus. Voices for Peace Book updated.indd 15

14 and east, Sam and Orion traveled two weeks by stagecoach to Utah and then Nevada. In Virginia City, Nevada, after some misadventures in mining and a few hustles, Sam became a reporter with the town’s newspaper, The Territorial Enterprise He rst used Mark Twain as a byline (the name one signs to one’s articles) for a travel piece on February 3, 1863. No one knew it then, but a legend was born that day. Soon, people would know him better as Mark Twain than as Samuel Clemens. Journalism and writing would become Twain’s main job from then on. He was also a humorist. This meant he wrote in a funny and interesting way that made people think di erently about important subjects. He reported from Hawaii for the Sacramento Daily Union of Sacramento, California. Readers loved his amusing stories. The publication Alta California hired Twain to write letters reporting about life from such locations as Key West, Florida; California; New York City; St. Louis; and Nicaragua, among others. Mark Twain lived enough to fill five lifetimes—and hundreds of books. 2 Twain Keller Book.indd 14 6/9/19 4:32 PM This photo shows Olivia Langdon in her early 20s, around the time that she would marry Twain. 15 In 1867, another paper paid him to write about parts of Europe and the Middle East. On that trip, a passenger named Charles Langdon showed Twain a picture of Langdon’s sister, Olivia, or Livy. Twain often said it was love at rst sight—he was hooked, just from seeing that picture. He communicated with Livy Langdon by letter, and they eventually met and married. Her family introduced Clemens to writers, activists, and others who wanted to change the world for the better. This suited him. He was always curious about new people, places, and things. To Twain, each person was like a new book or story to experience. From 1869 to 1871, he and Livy lived in Bu alo, New York, where Twain edited and wrote for a paper he part-owned, the Bu alo Express Between 1872 and 1880, the couple had three daughters: Susy, Clara, and Jean. They then built a home in Hartford, Connecticut. American Author Twain Keller Book.indd 15 6/9/19 4:32 PM

The 1850 church has been rebuilt several times. It is still part of the community and hosts an annual San Geronimo Feast Day. CHAPTER 4 Pueblo Life after the Rebellion The Pueblos formed a united front against oppression in the Pueblo Revolt, or, as some scholars called the movement, “the First American Revolution.” According to archaeologist Joseph Aguilar, a San Ildefonso Pueblo tribal member, “The Revolt period is still so important to Pueblo identity. In many ways it shaped the world we live in today.” Once the Spanish were defeated, the Pueblo people lived independently for the next 12 years. They rebuilt their religious institutions and established tribal governments. But they still had to face droughts and enemy tribes on horseback raiding their pueblos. There was also con ict among people who supported the rebellion and those who had been converted and loyal to the Catholic church. Sometimes these di erences led to violence. Diego de Vargas, who would become the governor of New Mexico in 1692, went through Pueblo villages and reclaimed the provinces for the Spanish Crown. Once he returned to Mexico, he said that the pueblos had been reconquered. This event was later known as the Bloodless Re-conquest. The Spanish again brought in priests to convert the natives to

Most people think pollination only happens with flowers, but did you know trees need pollination, too? Some trees need help from pollinators. Other trees—such as pines, spruce trees, and hemlocks—depend on the wind to help make pollination happen. In the Forest Where Pollination Happens The air around the treetops in the forest during spring is often filled with pollen, creating a hazy appearance. Did You ? KNOW Because evergreen trees don’t have flowers with nectar and pollen, pine trees don’t attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; all they need for pollination is wind. The male cones are the ones that produce tiny pollen grains which drift to female cones on other trees. 26 An average worker bee produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in their lifetime, which is about 6 to 8 weeks. To make one pound of honey, over 500 worker bees must visit over 2 million flowers to gather enough nectar! A honeybee can pollinate between 50 to 100 plants before returning to the hive. How much honey do bees make? Where does honey get its flavor? The flavor, smell, and appearance of honey are determined by the kinds of flowers visited by the bees that create it. How fast can honeybees fly? Honeybees can fly at an average speed of 15 mph (24.1kph). Their speed can be 20 mph (32.2kph) if they’re not carrying a full load of pollen back to the hive. They can flap their wings over 200 times per second. Honeybees have a short life span because they are always working and rarely sleep. Most live between 4–6 weeks. However, the queen bee can live up to two years. 69

Choosing Your New Dog 55 nervous when meeting with you outside the pen. Puppies need to be brought out of their comfort zone to see how they adjust to new people and environments. A puppy might try to lick your face, or he might freeze and seem to go stiff, get frantic and panicky, or even urinate out of fear. If he does show fear, does he recover in few seconds and maybe start licking you, wagging his tail, and interacting with you? If he shows fear and nothing you do seems to help, we recommend meeting another puppy. If you want to put extra effort into caring for, training, and socializing a puppy who may never act like a “normal” dog, the shyest pup may be your dog. If you want a running buddy who’s ready to play at the drop of a hat, the boldest pup of the litter might be for you. Adoption Tip The bottom line is that choosing a puppy is a bit of a guessing game. If you have firm expectations about what you want or need in a canine companion, such as size restrictions, you should consider an adult dog. For the Love of Rescue Cats 34 Food Litter box and scoop (see Chapter 6) Litter (see Chapter 6) Toys (see Chapter 7) Brush or comb Scratching post Bed Nail clippers Identification for Your Cat Be sure to have proper and secure identification on your cat. Even if your cat lives indoors all the time, there could be a moment when she slips out the door. Your cat needs a collar and identification tag as well as an implanted microchip. Some animal shelters already microchip at the time of adoption; if not, it is a simple procedure that your veterinarian can do. Even if your cat is microchipped, she still needs an identification tag with your name and phone number in case you need to be reached. An identification tag is also good if your cat has to stay at the vet’s office or a boarding facility overnight. The type of collar you get is important. We recommend a “safety” or “breakaway” collar. These collars, if caught on something, will open and allow your cat to escape. This is important both inside and out, if your cat should get caught on a curtain rod or tree limb, for example. (See the Cats and Collars on page 181.) Acclimating Your Cat It is interesting to observe your cat come out of her cat carrier when you first bring her home. Does she bolt out of the carrier, anxious to check things out, or does she run under the nearest couch, bed, or dresser? A scared, hesitant cat will need more time to acclimate to a new environment. Be sure to be patient and give her lots of love and time to adjust. A bolder cat will still need reassurance, love, and attention but is going to acclimate to her new home in a shorter period of time. Remember, every cat is different. For the Love of Rescue Dogs 54 how do you decide which one is best for you? As we’ve mentioned, personalities of puppies in the same litter can be dramatically different. Most shelters do not allow visitors to enter puppy pens, but you can observe the litter. Look for puppy that is trying to make eye contact, being social, and working for attention while getting closer to you. If possible, pick up a puppy, hold him so that you can look into his eyes, and evaluate his response. If some of the puppies are shy when they are in the group, don’t automatically rule them out. Visiting with them separately can give them chance to show their personalities without the competition of their littermates. Conversely, puppies that seem outgoing or demanding while in the pen can turn out to be quite shy and Adoption Tip To avoid making a hasty decision, leave the children at home when you make your first visit to the shelter. Screen the puppy or dog and know that he is a good fit for your family before the kids meet him.  A potential adopter and puppy get to know each other better in the ARL’s “hug room.”

Camp Letterman to hospitals throughout the North. About 1,200 men remain buried at the site. The final casualties of the Battle of Gettysburg were taken northward on November 19, the same day President Lincoln arrived to give his iconic speech. Many of those who survived their wounds would suffer for the rest of their lives. Missing limbs and disfigured faces were only part of the postwar legacy. Without modern antibiotics and aseptic techniques, many wounds never fully healed. They would repeatedly reopen or become infected again, plaguing the survivors for the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, despite poor training and a lack of modern understanding of wounds, the surgeons and their attendants at the Battle of Gettysburg did a masterful job of saving lives. According to Letterman’s account, 14,193 wounded men were treated in Union field hospitals. More than 12,000 more casualties were treated in Confederate field hospitals that were not as well supplied as the Union’s. “The conduct of the medical officers was admirable,” Letterman concluded in his official report. “Their labors not only began with the beginning of the battle, but lasted long after the battle had ended. Unfortunately, on July 6 the Union Army quickly uprooted to follow the retreating Confederates. With the army went most of the surgeons. Only 106 Union surgeons and a handful of Confederate surgeons were left to care for tens of thousands of wounded men. “No more could be left,” Letterman wrote in his official report, “as it was expected that another battle would, within three or four days, take place; and, in all probability, as many wounded be thrown upon our hands as at the battle of the 2d and 3d.” The suffering continued for weeks. The small number of Union and Confederate surgeons, aug mented with contracted and volunteer surgeons, worked relentlessly, amputating limbs reeking of gangrene and cleaning and redressing suppurating wounds. “Groans and cries, screams, and curses, moans and grinding teeth!” surgeon James recalled. “And the horrible silence of torture beyond all expression those weeks of sickening work, when the cut of the knife and the rasp of the saw grated on my Dr. Jonathan Letterman, medical director for the Army of the Potomac, poses with his staff.
