a dva n c e m e n t Levinsons Give Teaching Fellowship to Benefit Students When Larry Levinson and his wife, Karen, visited campus for Grandparents’ Day in April 2012, they immediately recognized a difference in their granddaughter Missy ’15: she exuded a degree of enthusiasm, self-confidence and intellectual curiosity that they hadn’t seen before. “As the day proceeded, we saw that what Missy had absorbed during her time at Blair is the essence of the School: the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence in an environment of cultural plurality, with an emphasis on understanding oneself along with the special uniqueness of each and every Blair individual,” said Mr. Levinson, a New Jersey native who is president and CEO of Acme Plastics, Inc., in Woodland Park. “Karen and I looked at each other and said ‘isn’t this what made our country great?’” After talking about how important it is to keep this educational spirit alive, particularly in difficult economic times, the Levinsons decided that their charitable foundation should fuel the wonderful experience their granddaughter was having at Blair. As a result, the Lawrence and Karen Levinson Family Charitable Foundation established the Levinson Faculty Fellow to provide for, nurture, recognize and retain the most promising young instructors, ensuring a consistently high level of excellence among the Blair faculty.

The fellowship was awarded to faculty member Thomas Dougherty for the 2012-2013 school year. The Levinsons met Tom at Blair’s Leadership Dinner in May 2012 and were impressed by his personality, drive and empathy for others. “We have no doubt that Tom will flourish in the Blair environment,” Mr. Levinson said.

Tennis Court Named in Memory of Alexander “Sandy” Lawrence ’70 Blair’s award-winning tennis center, which encompasses the Tennis House and 10 courts, was recently graced with a newly named court, thanks to a generous gift from Trustee Alex Sloane ’70. Court four is
now known as “Lawrence Court” in memory of former varsity tennis captain Alexander “Sandy” Lawrence ’70. Sandy, a three-year Blair student, was a talented athlete who played on the varsity basketball, soccer and tennis teams. He was an especially gifted tennis player, and he had an infectious sense of humor. Mr. Sloane made this gift to honor Sandy and their friendship.
