Every August since 1945, the sleepy Valencian town of Buñol has hosted what is undoubtedly the messiest, and probably the most fun festival in Europe, La Tomatina. The riotous mayhem unfolds on the last Wednesday in August and involves a 9am scramble to snatch a ham from the top of a greased pole, after which 120 tonnes of ripe tomatoes are tipped from trucks and onto the waiting participants.
