More than 40K vote in Langley Advance Times Readers’ Choice Awards
Repeat finalists and those who made the cut for the first time both value the public feedback

Running a business is never easy, particularly in the post-COVID era when finding good staff is difficult, and inflation is driving up costs.
Amid all this, the Langley Advance Times offers readers a chance to provide valuable feedback to local businesses with the Readers’ Choice Awards. And hopefully the businesses that were named as finalists throughout this publication will see that their hard work does not go unnoticed.
Readers also seem to value the opportunity to share their faves.
This year’s vote count was 40, 364, the highest in the history of the newspaper’s readers’ choice campaign. That compares with 31,000 votes in 2022.
“We want to thank our readers for taking the time to vote for their favourite businesses and
services,” said publisher Lisa Farquharson. “The recognition means so much to the recipients and truly gives them the recognition they deserve in the community.”
Readers’ Choice winners are given certificates, often displayed in the businesses.
“I do display the awards. They do matter to me, because it shows that what myself and my team are doing is working,” said Shawn McMahon, owner of Langley’s Broco Glass. He was in the glass business for 16 years before opening Broco Langley in 2003. McMahon said the glass business involves not only providing glass products but also highlevel customer service.
“Clients have a high expectation of quality work, and we pride ourselves on providing that to them. With that comes a lot of word-ofmouth referrals,” he said.
The shop makes the Readers’ Choice finalists list again as the business, which has seven employees, marks its 20th anniversary. He and the other finalists credit their employees with being key in the success of the businesses.
“I constantly hear feedback from customers how pleasant and courteous the employees are. My employees are truly what makes my business run so well,” noted James VanderZwan, owner of Western Star Plumbing.
VanderZwan, who has lived in Langley most of his life, started in plumbing in 1995 and started his own firm in 1997. The first-time finalist now has eight employees.
Another new finalist is Men in Kilts which does exterior cleaning. Owner Nicholas Brand started the business more than 20 years ago, but it’s the last few years that have marked a big shift in how the company operates.
Men in Kilts is big on work/life balance, introducing a four-day work week. Brand explained that has gone a long way to helping the business retain quality staff.
“The challenge is with a window cleaning business or pressure washing businesses, nobody grows up saying ‘I want to be a window cleaner’, and we’re not looked at as a real trade,” he noted. ”So you tend to get people who come and go.”
The second big change was paying a living wage and perks. And when the staff met budget targets, there was a trip to Mexico for 14 people in his operation.
Brand has extra reasons to be proud. A couple of years ago, he branched out into interior cleaning with MaidPro, which was also a finalist in the 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards.
“We take the same values to MaidPro,” he said. “We’ve only been in business for about a year and a half, so to be nominated in our second year of existence, we’re really, really proud of that.”
The Langley Advance Times hopes all the finalists value the readers’ opinions of them and take a sense of pride in being selected.
“I feel privileged to be one of the finalists,” VanderZwan said. “We work hard at providing the customer with solutions to their plumbing problems, and any advice that might assist them during a renovation or plumbing project.”
