Helping others this holiday season After such a gorgeous summer and beautiful weather right into October, it’s hard to fathom the cold months that are coming. Along with the warm weather, Canada has faced inflation at a rate not seen in decades. The increasing cost of everyday goods like groceries, fuel and utilities has many families straining to keep up. The holiday season brings with it a lot of expectations and it can be hard at the best of times to do everything, feed everyone and gift appropriately. Not everyone reading this will be able to make their budget stretch and not everyone reading this won’t. We are all on different paths in life, with different abilities. And even for those with budgets under control, an unexpected expense can be hard to deal with. As the holiday season approaches, think about how you can help a neighbour, friend or family member. Is it a donation to the local foodbank? Maybe it’s
something as simple as making an extra casserole or dessert or buying an extra bag of potatoes or box of chocolates and taking it to a neighbour. Got room in your budget to buy an extra gift? Take it to the Christmas Bureau or drop it in a bin around town. Don’t know where to drop off a donation? The Sylvan Lake News will accept donations at our offices at #103 5020 50A St. until Dec. 16. Fill out an entry form when you make a drop off and we’ll enter your name to win some great local prizes. And we won’t stop there because the need won’t stop for some. When our office re-opens after the holidays, bring in any food bank donations and we’ll have another draw at the end of January. And we’ll do it again in February. Just because the Christmas season has passed, the need to help our neighbours won’t go away.

WINTER IN SYLVAN LAKE IS
nothing short of enchanting Winter in Sylvan Lake is nothing short of magical! As much as we all enjoy the hustle and bustle of summer, I can’t help but love the magic and quiet charm that takes over our town through the winter. Soon, the pier will be sparkling under the lights of the Winter Village, and we will yet again be able to gather around the campfire with our friends and neighbours to enjoy the cooler weather. The nights are calm while the days continue to thrive with energy and excitement, as families and visitors enjoy all of the winter activities our lake and town has to offer. In addition to our many outdoor winter activities, our community showcases exciting opportunities to those who prefer to stay indoors. Our Yuletide Festival will once again be filling the Nexsource Centre with festive music and the marvelous,
creative wonders of local artisans. Gathering for sporting events and cheering on our hometown hockey team, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers, has become a staple of excitement and entertainment for residents and visitors alike. I’d like to offer well wishes on behalf of the members of council. We are proud to have you in Sylvan Lake and look forward to enjoying a season of wonderful memories together.
Megan Hanson Mayor, Town of Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake ISN’T JUST A SUMMER DESTINATION For years, Sylvan Lake, as beautiful as it has always been, was always a well-kept secret. For generations, families passed their cabins and memories down to the next generation. Little by little, these cabins are being replaced by beautiful vacation and permanent homes, yet there are still many much-loved original homes situated on prime property – and it always makes me wonder what sweet family memories were created under those roofs and at the lake in the summer months. Having relocated to Sylvan Lake in 2012 from Calgary, whenever I share the name of the town I get to call home, it is met with comments like, “My family and I used to go there every summer,” or, “I remember when I visited Sylvan Lake one summer and…” My reply is always about why we chose to move to Sylvan Lake, how much it continues to evolve and why we choose to continue to make Sylvan Lake our permanent home. In fact, if you find yourself with time on your hands, look up Every Day’s A Holiday In Sylvan Lake

on YouTube and you’ll find a song commissioned by the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce that captures a bit of the feelings and nostalgia that you get when you spend time in our town. Today, summers are no longer the “best-kept secret in central Alberta” and because our shoulder seasons are being reimagined and developed with fantastic fall and winter festivals and events, not to mention the picturesque Sylvan Lake Winter Village on the pier, winters in Sylvan Lake are fast becoming central Alberta’s new not-so-secret, secret! Welcome to Sylvan Lake and don’t be a stranger. Here’s hoping you love this town as much as we do and help us spread the word about Sylvan Lake winters. Enjoy!
Denise Bryan-Williams Executive Director, Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce

Stay safe on the ice this winter By Canadian Red Cross
Ice factors Many factors affect ice thickness, including type of water, location, the time of year and other environmental factors such as: • Water depth and size of body of water. • Currents, tides and other moving water. • Chemicals, including salt. • Fluctuations in water levels. • Logs, rocks and docks absorbing heat from the sun. • Changing air temperature. • Shock waves from vehicles traveling on the ice. Ice colour and thickness The colour of ice may be an indication of its strength. • Clear blue ice is strongest. • White opaque or snow ice is half as strong as blue ice. Opaque ice is formed by wet snow freezing on the ice. • Grey ice is unsafe. The greyness indicates the presence of water. Minimum ice thickness should be: • 15 centimetres for walking or skating alone.
Thank you, Central Alberta, for your support during our 2022 season!

• 20 centimetres for skating parties or games. • 25 centimetres for snowmobiles. Remember: thickness is only one consideration while enjoying activities on ice, and the minimum thicknesses are guidelines only. Local conditions and the type of water body will affect the ice strength. Check with local authorities for information on local ice conditions before heading out on the ice. Obey posted signs indicating when and where ice surface is acceptable for activities. Avoid going out on ice at night. When you are alone on ice If you get into trouble on ice and you’re by yourself: • Call for help. • Resist the immediate urge to climb back out where you fell in. The ice is weak in this area. • Try to relax and catch your breath. Turn yourself toward shore so you are looking at where you entered onto the ice. The ice is more stable close to shore. • Reach forward onto the broken ice without pushing down. Kick your legs to try to get your body into a horizonal position. • Continue kicking your legs and crawl onto the ice. • When you are back on the ice, crawl on your stomach or roll away from the open area with your arms and legs spread out as far as possible to evenly distribute your body weight. Do not stand up! Look for shore and make sure you are crawling in the right direction. When you are with others on ice Rescuing another person from ice can be dangerous. The safest way to perform a rescue is from shore. • Call for help. Consider whether you can quickly get help from trained professionals (police, firefighters or ambulance) or bystanders. • Check if you can reach the person using a long pole or branch from shore – if so, lie down and extend the pole to the person. • If you go onto ice, wear a PFD and carry a long pole or branch to test the ice in front of you. Bring something to reach or throw to the person (for example, a pole, weighted rope, line or tree branch). • When near the break, lie down to distribute your weight and slowly crawl toward the hole. • Remaining low, extend or throw your emergency rescue device (pole, rope, line or branch) to the person. • Have the person kick while you pull them out. • Move the person to a safe position on shore or where you are sure the ice is thick. Signal for help.

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the winter wonderland around Sylvan Lake. (File photo)
Enjoying the snow around Sylvan Lake By Michaela Ludwig
Whether you’re looking for a new winter activity to try or you traditionally don’t love winter but want to start enjoying it, Sylvan Lake has what you’re looking for – so put on your toque and come on out. Snowshoeing Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years and was an essential mode of travel for those living in snowy, northern regions. If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, here are a few reasons you should try it: • It’s great exercise. If you’ve been looking for a way to stay in shape during those cold winter months when it’s very tempting to stay parked on the couch, snowshoeing is an excellent, low-impact aerobic exercise. It lets you extend your hiking and running season and you can enjoy the solitude of areas that might be crowded in the summer months. • It’s a great social activity. Snowshoeing is for all ages and ability levels. • It’s not that expensive. Gear and lift tickets for skiing or snowboarding can add up, but snowshoeing is an affordable option. The only gear that’s required is snowshoes, which can be rented right in town, and appropriate winter clothing. Poles are recommended, but they’re not required. • It’s easy to get started. Few winter activities are as beginner friendly as snowshoeing. However, if you plan to traverse more complicated trails in the backcountry, there are classes or tours you can join to help you learn more advanced techniques. If you’ve decided to give snowshoeing a try, remember to wear suitable boots and socks. You want

your feet to be warm and dry. You should dress in layers, since snowshoeing can get your heart rate up, and don’t forget a hat and mitts, sunglasses and sunscreen. There aren’t any official trails around Sylvan Lake for snowshoeing, but many people explore around or on the lake and nearby Jarvis Bay Provincial Park is a popular snowshoeing destination. Snowkarting Snowkarting is a new way to explore around Sylvan Lake. Part go-kart, part snowmobile, these winter machines are rugged and can tackle all kinds of snowy terrain while out adventuring. You can rent a machine at Sun Sport Recreation in Sylvan and take it for a rip around the lake. Again, be sure to dress in layers and make sure someone knows where you’ll be going and when you’re expected to be back.

Ice fishing
12
ON SYLVAN LAKE
Ice fishing, a popular winter activity that many Lakers relish, is a great way to cherish moments with loved ones, along with staying safe this season. While an ice auger, fishing rod and bait is enough to get yourself some fish for supper, several locals further the activity with ice shacks to suit their needs for a more convenient and wholesome experience. Danielle Rowley, a local ice-fishing enthusiast who has been enjoying the activity on the northwestern side of Sylvan Lake for almost a decade, said it is a memorable way to spend time with family and friends.
You will be loved! Join us as we explore the stories which show us how the baby, born at Christmas, was a gift of God given to all people; a gift of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. This will be offered through our regular and special services which include:
December 11 10:30 am Massed Choir Service
December 21 7:00 pm Service of Hope - A service that leads us to the central truth of the Christmas story
December 24 7:00 pm Christmas Eve Candlelight and Communion Service
December 25 10:30 am Christmas Day Sunday Service Special Christmas Lunch (RSVP) Note: All services will also be on-line through Facebook and our web-site

“Ice fishing is one of my favourite things to do in the winter and living so close to the lake makes it all the better to spend my free time there,” Rowley said. “I love looking at all the different painted ice shacks on the lake. The more unusual and unique, the better.” Rowley said she thinks ice fishing could make for a great winter activity for the town of Sylvan Lake. “Having the option to rent or borrow a unit would make for more of a convenient way for someone that doesn’t own any gear to do so,” she said. Rowley, who often goes out exploring, said ice fishing also makes for a great solo adventure. When out fishing, a shack equipped with a wood-burning stove and an underwater camera could enhance the overall experience. “Invest in a good underwater camera. Sometimes just watching the fish swim by is as much fun as catching,” said Rowley, adding, “We don’t like to be cold, so we try to keep our shack stocked up with firewood, as we burn through lots during the cold spells.” Rowley reminds people to keep handy one of the most important tools for fishing – patience. “There are lots of days, especially last year, that we went without catching or even seeing a fish on the camera. If you don’t have patience, then ice fishing may not be for you,” she said. Rowley said she’s looking forward to enjoying this ice fishing season in their family’s winter camouflage shack that they built out of a 4,000-gallon fiberglass water tank. If you’re looking to get out on the ice this season, ice fishing adventure rentals are available from several providers in Sylvan Lake and there are even a few providers who offer overnight ice fishing adventure rentals for a truly unique winter experience. Be sure to come out to The Big Jig ice fishing event on the February long weekend. Ice fishers of all skill levels will have a chance to sink their lines and snag the longest catch and win some prizes.

Lighting Up Sylvan Lake for the holidays Green space By Michaela Ludwig
There’s just something about colourful lights twinkling off the snow that gets everyone in the mood for Christmas. On Friday, Nov. 25, and Saturday, Nov. 26, Sylvan Lake will usher in the holiday season with their Light Up The Lake event, Yuletide Festival and Winter Village. Thanks to local sponsors, these events are free for everyone to enjoy. The Light Up The Lake event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, and will include a candy cane tea, Santa Claus parade, fireworks and the official lighting of the Winter Village. The Winter Village is a special destination that you won’t want to miss. The pier will be wrapped up in over 300,000 twinkling lights and there’s so much to see and do that you’ll have to come more than once to take it all in. There will be a parade of mini Christmas trees, which are decorated by local businesses and visitors can vote for their favourite one. There will be skating rinks available and after dark the rinks will glow with colour-changing lights that are embedded in the ice surface. And don’t forget to spend a cozy evening by the bonfire, which will be set up around the Winter Village for guests to sit together, share stories, drink some cocoa and enjoy

the season. Guests can stroll through the Winter Village and take in all of the lights and beauty and there’s a festive archway that will be perfect for that Instagram-worthy snapshot. The Winter Village will be lit up until March 1. The Yuletide Festival will be held on the Friday and Saturday at the NexSource Centre and this will be the perfect opportunity to wrap up your Christmas shopping and find just the right thing for that hardto-buy-for person on your list. On Friday, Nov. 25, you’ll find the Christmas market, auctions and stage performances. On Saturday, Nov. 26, visitors can enjoy breakfast with Santa, the market, a kidz zone, more stage performances, photos with Santa and there will be a live gingerbread competition. From the Spirit of Sylvan Lake website, “Since the first Festival in 2012, it has grown considerably, has established important roots and is now a signature event in our community and in central Alberta. “The Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival is a Christmas celebration of traditions, all at one unique festival. It fosters and promotes opportunities for artisans and vendors, choirs, school choirs, musicians, entertainers and, of course, we cannot forget about Mr. and Mrs. Claus checking off children’s lists at the Kidz Zone. Beautiful Christmas trees and festive decorations are interspersed among the silent auction and raffle items. Excited children surround mascots as they dance in the aisleways. If having barrels of laughs on stage for the ugly sweater contest or decorating gingerbread houses gets you in the Christmas spirit, the festival is indeed a sight to behold. “The Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival is proud to celebrate community, family and friends through a wide range of experiences and activities. We are proud to share with you the wonderful spirit of Christmas. Believe in the magic; we do!” Proceeds from this year’s raffle and silent auction will be donated to Sylvan Lake Community Partners Association, Sylvan Lake Christmas Bureau, Sylvan Lake Community Food Bank and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre. Many of these events were cancelled in 2020 and reduced in 2021 due to COVID, so be sure to come out this year and enjoy all of the magic the holiday season has to offer in Sylvan Lake. Find more information on Facebook, under the Spirit of Sylvan Winter Village Facebook page.

Dave Lima Fireside Restaurant and Lounge Brandee Brandee Brandee
Edmonton-born Dave Lima’s Portuguese background Brandee Brandee Brandee all of the may not characterize flavours of Fireside Restaurant and Lounge, but it definitely embodies the atmosphere. For the past 14 years, Lima, who is the second youngest of 12 children and Fireside’s owner and chef, has crafted a place where everyone feels welcome and at home. The comforts of home are noted in Fireside’s renowned comfort food, the hockey or football game playing on one of the 17 televisions or a song that can be heard from the jukebox, often chosen by Lima himself. Fireside’s reputation as “the kitchen that is always open,” with food prepared and cooked to his high standards, is what draws many returning customers to re-enjoy their favourite dish, while catching up with friends. Some of the patron favourites are Fireside’s burgers, steaks, lasagna, Greek salad, beef dip and Lima’s own favourite, jambalaya. Be sure to look at the back of the menu to find the pizza selection, with melt-in-your-mouth crust. Forty years of experience in the restaurant industry has taught Lima that adaptability is as important as quality and consistency. He appreciates his team as much as he appreciates his customers. “I love the people, I love entertaining; it’s the Portuguese way.”

Sylvan Lake star chefs Marleah Thurston Lodge 43 When Heather Jones and Trevor Scott opened Lodge 43, they were looking for a chef whose style matched their own – and they found her. “She’s such an easy soul, she’s creative, positive, she is exactly what we need,” Jones said about Chef Marleah Thurston. Thurston said she has had a passion for cooking for as long as she can remember. She grew up in Taber, Alta., cooking alongside her Ukrainian mother and grandmother. She then enjoyed years of “playing around with food” with her own two daughters at home, until it was time to go back to work. She chose to do what she was good at. “I am just that home-cooking kind of person,” said Thurston. Comfort home-cooking with unique and freshly prepared menu items in a cozy cabin-style setting, where the fireplace is sure to be on and flannel is always welcome, is what one can expect at Lodge 43. The steaks are cut in-house, the chicken for the chicken and waffles is carefully selected and the cheesecake is deep-fried. Thurston’s favourite menu item is the Reuby Rings: hot and crispy onion rings smothered in corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and drizzled with a house-made Dijon sauce. Welcome to the Lodge.
Chris Lee Lokal Kitchen Lokal Kitchen’s chef and owner Chris Lee moved from South Korea to Calgary 15 years ago to pursue snowboarding. He ended up falling in love with golf – and with Sylvan Lake. “When I first came to Sylvan Lake, I liked the scenery here and the people here so much that I decided to live here,” said Lee. His athletic background earned him a scholarship for his abilities in modern pentathlon. It also inspired in him an appreciation for food – especially his mother’s

Joan Rogers Hazzard County Bar and Grill As the main chef at Hazzard County Bar and Grill, Joan Rogers’ creative and connective sides are where she shines. “It makes me get up in the morning and think, what can I do today?” she said about the deliveries to be checked, envisioning the soup of the day she will make to compliment her customers’ favourite menu items. Possibly stemming from her former home, growing up in a family of 19, the born-and-raised Newfoundlander has a flair for composing meals in pots, such as her special Newfie Jiggs Dinner. In 1998, Rogers moved to Sylvan Lake, where she now calls home. “I feel like I am family here,” she said of her appreciation for and from her co-workers. Hazzard draws patrons who walk or ride from near and far, having heard about the place to eat and drink where they will always be welcomed – and not disappointed. Rogers ensures this by stopping at each table to ask how they enjoyed their meal, the summer weekend buffet or the year-round traditional breakfast, eggs benedict, sausage and bacon with freshly cut and prepared hash browns. Knowing that for the person behind the creativity it is an honour to do what she does, that makes the draw even more enticing.
Korean home cooking. The result: Lokal Kitchen, where regulars and visitors come for the signature and secret sauces, spices and dressings with flavours “from the heart of Korea,” fused with multi-cultural and western-style dishes. From Korean barbeque meals to quesadillas and alfredo, bulgogi (which means fire-meat) can be found throughout the menu. While Lee’s own favourite menu item is the Bulgogi Truffle Eggs Benedict from the breakfast menu, he says his wife’s is the Japchae for its sweet potato starch noodle. Since opening eight years ago, Lokal has been a growing success. Some of his managing staff have been with him since the beginning and the others have been there at least five years, which means a lot to Lee, as do the familiar faces of those in his new hometown.

A season or a reason
to give
Sylvan Lakers looking to give or volunteer this winter season have many opportunities to do so. The following organizations work collaboratively to support individuals, children and families in the community who are in need. Reaching out is the first step to finding a meaningful place for your time, talents or treasures. Sylvan Lake Community Partners Association sylvanlakecommunitypartners.ca facebook.com/SLCommunityPartners/ info@sylvancpa.ca 403-887-9989 Cinzia Cappella’s first season with Sylvan Lake Community Partners Association (SLCPA) was 12 years ago when she first moved to town. In the beginning, she was on the receiving end when she found herself in need of social connection – and winter coats. Today, Cappella is not only a volunteer, but she is also SLCPA’s vice-chair. She said her involvement provides her with a “sense of purpose.” “Whenever someone is going through a rough time, even someone saying and remembering their first name is important,” explained Cappella. With 19 programs running, which can be found on the website, money, volunteers and donations are always needed at SLCPA, which is located at 4936 50 Ave. The Thrift Store by Community Partners is located at 1 5026 50 St. Baby formula, diapers and hygiene products are a few of the items that are constantly required to be replenished. Winter coats, children’s clothing and even used medical equipment can be donated or borrowed. SLCPA has a compassion fund that needs to be filled, they can organize rides for those who cannot get to appointments and host programs to connect, such as the parent-tot swim. Each person has their own story behind what inspires them to give, just as each person who is in need also has a story about how that came to be. Some, like Cappella, have faced an approaching winter season without a snowsuit for their child and, sadly, some know what it is like to feel hunger before their own season of harvest arrived.

Sylvan Lake Community Food Bank sylvanlakefoodbank.ca facebook.com/slfoodbank foodbanksylvan@gmail.com 403-887-4534 Located at 4 4725 43 St., Sylvan Lake Community Food Bank is a volunteer-based non-profit that began as a ministry of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The best ways to contact are via e-mail or leaving a phone message, which will be returned on a Wednesday morning. Money can be donated on the website and food can be dropped into one of the food bins at the local grocery stores. Volunteer Shari Britton said that food is needed in every season and for many reasons. “It’s hard for people sometimes to help in a big way, but even if they can drop off a can or two or a package of pasta in one of the bins, that all adds up,” said Britton. She encourages people to consider donating money over the holiday season, so that when the festivities are over food can still be purchased as needed. The food bank follows guidelines for freshness and waste; therefore, Britton said to keep in mind that best-before dates are not the same as expiry dates and that many dried or canned goods are still good for up to five years after the best before date.

sylvanlake.ca/en/public-services/volunteer-centre. aspx?_mid_=14294 www.facebook.com/townofsylvanlake volunteer@sylvanlake.ca Volunteer co-ordinator: 403-887-1137 Ext. 433 The town of Sylvan Lake Volunteer Centre not only recruits volunteers for their own programs, but also works with other organizations and events to connect them with volunteers who have aligned availability, passions and skills. The volunteer co-ordinator is there to assist potential volunteers with the application process, a free-of-charge criminal record check and an orientation before meeting individually to find out what is suitable for them. A current list of volunteer opportunities is available on the website. Amy Boutin, with the town of Sylvan Lake, said that volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and give back to the community. She said that even youth, who are not sure what they want to do in the future, often volunteer to get a sense of what they enjoy. One of the programs that is presently looking for volunteers is Snow Angels, which invites volunteers to adopt a driveway and shovel snow for those who cannot do it themselves. Boutin said this can be done as an individual or as a group, adding that the rewards are immense because of the friendships that are formed out of gratitude. Local volunteer Kacy Wilson said that she volunteers to help, connect and to get exercise. “It’s really rewarding to help others, and in return feel the gratification you receive from volunteering – the sense of purpose it brings is priceless,” said volunteer Heather Walinga. Perhaps one’s inspiration to give this season will come from also having elderly parents or children who attend the same school as others who do not have a lunch. Or maybe it is just because each person has a name – to be said and remembered this season.
