A Surrey Police Service officer is being investigated for breach of trust, according to the department.

While the charge has not yet been approved by the BC Prosecution Service, MacDonald said the SPS has notified the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.Theofficer, who is not named because charges have not been laid, was hired by the SPS in May of this year, and had more than one year of previous policing experience. On Aug. 17, the release notes, SPS Chief Const. Norm Lipinski “suspended this officer with pay, pending the outcome of the criminal investigation, which is being handled by the Surrey RCMP.”

A 33-year-old man is in critical condition after police say he was beaten by a group of South Asian males early Monday morning in Surrey. Surrey RCMP say they were called to a home in the 9000-block of 128 Street at about 1:12 a.m., where they found the victim lying in the driveway with serious injuries.Police say it seems he had been attending a gathering in the area when he was chased away by a group of “male suspects” and assaulted.

A man died in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Monday after police reportedly shot him with numerous bean bag rounds, near the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) building.

Surrey election When the civic election rolls around on Oct. 15, it will be just shy of four years since the federal gov ernment legalized cannabis – two days shy, to be exact. And Surrey still doesn’t have any cannabis stores. But people can cross 120 Street (Scott Road) into Delta to visit a dispensary, drive to White Rock or the Semiahmoo First Nation or have your order delivered to your home in Surrey. Now, one Surrey mayoral can didate says she will “end the ban” on cannabis stores in the city if she’s elected on Oct. 15.

Where do oncandidatesmayoralstandcannabisstores?

“The current ban is based on outdated evidence,” said Jinny Sims, Surrey Forward mayoral candidate, in a release Aug. 16. “It was assumed that prohibited sales would reduce use, protect our youth and ensure commu nity safety. None of that has occurred.”Simssaid there are “three rea sons” to allow cannabis sales in Surrey: to curtail the impact of gangs and illegal sellers of can nabis; to ensure the safe supply of cannabis products in Surrey; and to stop dealers from moving recreational cannabis users on to more dangerous drugs. “Safe supply makes a world of difference, but we also need to ensure that our children are not subject to dealers lacing cannabis with more dangerous drugs. This is only done to progress consum ers from a legal product to those that are illegal and more profit able for Meanwhile, gangs.”Mayor Doug Mc Callum said, “First of all, there is noMcCallum, ban.” who is once again running for mayor under the Safe Surrey Coalition banner, said when his slate was elected they “approved putting two into Surrey and since that time, we are looking at one location.” He added the city is looking at two locations and are “very, very close to going into a rezoning and having that up and operating in months.”Fouryears ago, when campaigning in the 2018 election, McCallum told the Now-Leader he is against cannabis stores and product operations in Surrey “until we get crime under control.”Askedif crime is under control now in 2022, he said, “I think it’s certainly better.” “The crime rates that just re cently came out are a little better, but there’s parts of the crime that aren’t good. That’s the gang ac tivity,” he said. “We feel, at least, comfortable that we could put two stores in. We’re not going to put in a huge number of stores like some cities are.” McCallum said there hasn’t been a “cry out there at all” to have cannabis stores. “It never comes up in our com munity. I haven’t heard anything about cannabis in our community at all and I’m out in the commu nity all the time.” He said that “pausing a bit” has been the right approach. “Let’s put it this way, we’re tak ing a measured approach to the stores,” McCallum said. “If it does affect the crime rate or the community in some way, then we won’t continue.” Coun. Brenda Locke agrees on the “measured” approach. But Locke, who is running for mayor with the Surrey Connect slate, said residents “definitely” want to see cannabis stores in the city. “It is a controlled substance, so I think you have to do it in a way that is measured and controlled.”

Ottawa will create a special team to counter Russian disinformation and propaganda, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday.

Inder Randhawa, the SEVA Thrift Store manager, said it’s been an accomplishment to make it through COVID. “We thought that was a crisis and now to make it through and actually get back on our feet again and then be hit with this one now,” Randhawa explained. “To throw a wrench in there and start from scratch again, it’s a huge undertak ing. It’s a very daunting task at the moment.”Intheyears since it’s opened, SEVA has donated a total of $75,000 to support local groups and organizations – including $10,000 the first year the thrift storeButopened.Narman said that’s only the society’s measurable success. “We’ve donated this much money. But there’s also the unmea surable success that you just can’t even put a price on.”

Store has been located at 9430 120 St. for the past six years, and the society is looking for a more affordable space.

The society was told verbally by their landlord their rent would be doubling to $13,000 from $6,500. The Now-Leader reached out to the landlord, who confirmed he approached the society about an increase but wouldn’t answer any otherCurrentlyquestions.–and unlike residen tial rentals – there are no caps for commercial rental increases.

“The initial reaction was, ‘Oh, we’re going to have to shut down,’” she said, adding that if they stayed in their current location most of the money made at the thrift store would go toward paying rent.

Only recently has SEVA started to get back to pre-COVID sales levels, she said. “But basically that little bit bet ter in sales we’ve done is just going to go into the increase in rent.”

Raj Arneja, part-time manager and chair of the SEVA society’s board, said as there’s not much they can do about a rent increase, they’re “actively looking if we can get something at a reasonable rate.”“We would rather move than close our doors because of what we’ve worked for.” But the issue is finding a big enough commercial space to rent, Arneja added. “We need space. That’s the biggest thing.” She said it’s about more than just finding a building with a visible storefront.“Wemust ensure it is accessible for the community we serve, for the volunteers that rely on their work with us for skill building, networking, social support and community integration, and then the physical renovating of the inte rior: rebuilding walls, storage, and shelving inside the store.” She said when they moved into their current space, it cost about $60,000 to set it up. “To move this place – as it is – is a huge undertaking. We just don’t have the staff to do it. All of us have full-time jobs and how are we going to do that? This whole thing was just a shell.”

Anita Huberman, president and CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, said she’s been hearing about significant commercial rent increases throughout Surrey and Metro Vancouver due to rising costs and property tax increases and other fee “Landlords, hikes.property manag ers are having to pass on that increased cost to their renters. Environment Surrey residents can again buy quality trees at an affordable price to help grow the urban forest. The city’s online tree sale started Wednesday (Aug. 24) and ends Sept. 7, while suppliesThelast.tree pickup date is Sept. 18 at Surrey Operations Centre (6651 148 St.). Close to 1,000 fruit and deciduous trees will be sold for $20 each, with more than a dozen types available. Sales are limited to Surrey residents, and three trees can be purchased per Surrey billing“Newaddress.trees planted on your property help the environment, provide shade and insulation for your home, can increase your property value, and make your neighbourhood more livable,” says a post on the website surrey. ca/treesale.“Eachtree planted contributes to growing the urban forest and increases tree canopy coverage across the City.”Alltrees in Surrey, on both public and private land, are part of the city’s urban forest, noted Mayor Doug McCallum.Inthefall, the city’s final tree sale of 2022 opens Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. and closes Oct. 12, with a pickup date of Oct. 23. Trees sold by the city average two to three centimetres, caliper size. Most trees are in five- or 10-gallon pots and vary between five to 12 feet tall. On pickup day, ensure your vehicle can accommodate this, as city officials say they’re unable to guarantee the size of specific trees. In mid-July, the city launched a campaign encouraging residents to help keep trees on their street watered this summer. When temperatures rise, many of Surrey’s roughly 80,000 street trees need extra water to survive. As city workers focus on watering newly planted trees during high-heat summer days, residents are urged to water older trees along their street. The Surrey South provincial byelection, set for Saturday, Sept. 10, will be an interesting test of the NDP government’s ability to draw votes from former supporters of other parties. In the provincial election held in 2020, Surrey South went to the BC Liberals – but not by a wide margin. Stephanie Cadieux, who was elected in the 2017 election with almost 51 per cent of the vote, saw her share of the vote fall to 47.38 per cent – just over four per cent ahead of NDP candidate Pauline Greaves, who is running for the party again in the byelec tion. Cadieux won the riding by 1,176 votes. Cadieux resigned her seat in April to become Canada’s first chief accessibility officer. Premier John Horgan took his time in calling a byelection – doing so on Aug.13 – more than four months after Cadieux resigned her seat. Contrasts make Surrey South an unusual riding. It includes most of Surrey’s agricultural lands, a portion of South Surrey reaching as far west as 128 Street, the Hazelmere Valley and a portion of Cloverdale and even Clayton. Its northern boundary is 76 Avenue. The urban areas within it range from spacious large lots in South Surrey to the cramped streets of EastTheClayton.NDPdid extremely well in Surrey in the 2020 election, winning seven of the nine ridings. They won one seat they had never held before, Surrey-Cloverdale, and improved their margin of victory in seats the BC Liberals have held at various times in the last decade, notably

Cloverdale residents are enthused about it. However, the planned hospital is far too small to meet the anticipated growth in the area. It also will lack an ICU and BC Liberal leader Kevin Falcon, a former Surrey-Cloverdale MLA, says it will be little more than an urgent care centre. As noted above, such centres can‘t seem attract enough staff.Falcon has also suggested it should be located in another part of Surrey, claiming Cloverdale is not well-served by transit (which isHowever, true). he was finance minister in the BC Liberal government when it decided to sell a hospital site at Highway 10 and 152 Street. That site is now covered with housing and commercial space. Surrey needed a second hospital then, and the 15-year delay (from that time until the new hospital opens in 2027) at a time of rapid growth is inexcusable.Votersneed to look beyond the glitter of a new hospital and ask Greaves and BC Liberal candidate Elenore Sturko the tougher questions about what their parties would do to attract and keep health care staff, to offer meaningful incentives to family doctors and to ensure that the ambulance service is available at all times when an urgent call comes in. It should also be noted that the Green Party is running candidate Simran Sarai, a SFU student, and the BC Conservative Party is running businessman Harman Bhangu. Both will draw votes from the other parties, and while they have no chance of winning, their vote totals may prove decisive in determining the winner. Frank Bucholtz writes twice a month for the Now-Leader.

While different political parties have been seemingly unable to solve this issue, it looks particularly bad on an NDP government. A party that has traditionally been supported by unions and their members is struggling to recruit and retain unionized workers for a critical health care Ultimately, service.voters will – and should – hold the provincial government responsible. And the public needs to demand services from BC Emergency Health Services, so our ambulances are fully staffed every Saturday.

Frankly Speaking Frank Bucholtz It’s unacceptable that Maple Ridge had no ambulances staffed on Saturday. Union head Troy Clifford of the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. warned the public to expect delays in service across the region. He said the province is short 1,000 paramedics, so this is an issue that will not be resolved quickly. This situation is a tragedy for our seniors in particular. After a lifetime of paying taxes, in their retirement they must worry whether they will get the services they need if they suffer a fall or are having chest pains. Just ask South Surrey’s Jaqui Joys. After breaking her hip on Aug. 6, the 72-year-old waited almost 12 hours for an ambulance despite living a 10-minute drive from a hospital. • A smelly rotten tomato to the person who insulted us loud neighbours. We’re not all that bad. Besides, it works both ways. We can hear you too.

The Editor, I would like to pass on an observation that our daughter and son in-law made when, after 10 years, they recently moved from Minnesota to Vancouver Island. They were surprised how friendly Canadians are. While this may be a generalization, they noted that people here smile, say hello and stop for pedestrians. More likely than not, people here acknowledge each other, display a sense of humour, young and old often talk to one another, men and women are treated with courtesy. When I lived in the U.S. for several years, I found Americans to be accepting of me as a Canadian. That is, until several years ago, when I attended the July 4th celebration in Blaine with a Canadian flag in my hat. I was surprised that I was scoffed and jeered at. Is there now a greater divisiveness?

A. Leering, White Rock Emailyourroseorrottentomatotoedit@surreynowleader.com.

Sarah Rush, Surrey Canadians are unique

• Rotten tomatoes to people who put out leg traps for rodents. Your actions cause young animals to die an ugly death or loss of leg – if they are able to gnaw off the trap. It could be a neighbour’s dog or cat. Ignorant!

The Editor, I wonder why the Surrey Police Service transition is still an issue. When the present administration was running for election, it was clear to all that one of the major pledges was a new police force.Still, there are signs, editorials, and outrage over them keeping their promise. This situation reminds me of those south of the border who believe the election was stolen. Canada has become the U.S. G.W. Hendrickson, White Rock Explain yourself, Surrey The Editor, Safe Surrey’s Aug. 8 Official Community Plan overturn decision needs examining.

Surrey taxpayers are painfully aware that the Safe Surrey slate of Mayor Doug McCallum and councillors Allison Patton, Doug Elford, Laurie Guerra and Mandeep Nagra have the power to vote in anything they want to put on the table, but that doesn’t mean they should.

Being elected means making decisions for the best of all taxpayers and residents, not just putting forward your own agenda with disregard for years of work by qualified planning staff, the public and foresight by previous councils. The Aug. 8 decision to rezone prime employment lands on Highway 99 right by the U.S. border to residential was another heinous example.Iamnot sure how the above councillors can look anyone in the eye after such a hypocritical vote. Just earlier this year the same people were at Metro feigning a desperate need for employment lands that hundreds of acres of critical biodiverse habitat by the Little Campbell River was needed to be rezoned industrial and employment lands. We were losing jobs to other cities, they claimed, and needed more employment land to grow. The land by the river was perfect for a business park, Patton claimed. Well, the employment land just rezoned residential wasn’t just perfect for such a business park, but planning staff in 2020 said to council that the land on the 99 was “essential for the future prosperity of Surrey.” The developer had previously been told at least twice that they should come back with a plan that was for employment uses on the land. What do we have now? Four hundred and eighty-two townhouses instead, not the right place and not even the right type of housing Surrey needs. The OCP was established at considerable cost and months of effort by city staff, input by the public and various departments to create a livable city that is well thought out. It contains not just the elements of a great city in balance but in the right places. Something is clearly amiss at city hall. Surrey has regressed decades environmentally with this type of developer-bias planning and it will take years to get it back. I fear much will never be recovered.

• Rotten tomatoes to the residents on 132A who are dumping there soiled, dirty mattresses on the side of the road, and to the City of Surrey for not doing anything about it. It’s disgusting.

• Rotten tomatoes to the province that collects vacancy tax from vacant homes. Why is the money not used to keep the yard from looking like the abandoned, waist deep jungle it is or why doesn’t the city follow up on those vacant properties?

• A garage full of roses to the unknown neighbour who reported to police that our garage door was open in the wee hours. Our dogs alerted us to a police officer with flashlights in the front yard. You are a wonderful neighbour! Also a garage full of roses to the RCMP officer who attended in the middle of the night to keep us safe. We appreciate your hard work in this city and hope you stay. Thank you also for helping us evict horrible renters who invaded the peace of our quiet neighbourhood and the daily occurrences you attended.

Perhaps Canadians do have something that is a little unique and special – we can be friendly.

• Rotten tomatoes to Surrey city council. Running a city with two police forces that taxpayers fund and you won’t listen to us. Hope you are all voted out in October.

The Museum of Surrey’s feature gallery is now filled with TV and movie memorabilia for a closer look at the city’s filming history. The“Surrey on Screen” exhibit opened Aug. 18 for an eightmonth run at the facility in Cloverdale, until mid-April. Costumes, photos, props and other film-related objects feature Surrey-shot shows including Smallville, Supernatural, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Superman & Lois, IZombie and more.Curator Colleen Sharpe and museum staff assembled the exhibit with the help of an ar chives team with Warner Bros. Discovery, the City of Surrey’s film office and also Cloverdale BIA.“It’s been so much fun putting this together and learning about how much has been filmed here,” Sharpe said Aug. 16 as a small crew put the finishing touches on the exhibit. The showcase isn’t a comprehensive look at Surrey’s film history, it’s a snapshot of highlights of the industry here. At the gallery entrance, a red carpet leads visitors past a wall of autographed photos of famous actors and the “credits” of nearly 400 films shot in Surrey over the past several decades. Among the exhibit’s largest items is an old movie projector, dubbed “Ethel,” once used at the Clova Theatre in downtown Cloverdale. On loan from Surrey’s heritage collection, the International Projector Corp.made Lume-X was built in 1940 and was in operation at the Clova until the theatre closed in 2014.“Itmakes me happy that it’s here because there was some work involved to make it happen,” Sharpe explained. “This is one of two projectors that were at the Clova. This is Ethel, and the other one was calledWhenBertha.”theClova closed, the theatre operators donated one projector to Surrey’s heritage department and sold the other to pay off debts, according to Sharpe.“This one was disassembled in pieces because storing something large like this isn’t easy, it’s so big,” Sharpe said. “It was taken apart, and months ago I asked the collections curator to borrow it for this exhibit, and we needed to find someone to help put it back together. We found a technician, thankfully, and we have some photos of him working on it.”

The Clova has been featured in a number of Surrey-filmed productions including Smallville, where it’s known as The Talon Theater. For the “Surrey on Screen” exhibit, the projector is purposely positioned next to costumes for the Green Arrow, Clark Kent and Lex characters from Smallville Elsewhere in the exhibit space, people can sit in theatre seats to watch a clip of Surrey-filmed highlights.“Thoseseats are not from the Clova, unfortunately,” Sharpe noted. “We bought them as props from the Caprice Theatre in South Surrey – secondhand from someone else, but that’s where they’re originally from.”

A couple of years ago the Bronze Boot tournament was named for Joe Connelly, a North Surrey football pioneer who’s been involved in the game for more than five decades.Connelly, who is on the mend following open-heart surgery six weeks ago, said he’ll be at this week’s tournament, as always. “I had a quadruple bypass, and they threw in a pacemaker,” Connelly said. “But everything’s going well now. “I started the thing and the tournament’s named after me,” he added, “so I help with the scheduling and all that. It kind of runs itself after 53 years, you know,” Connelly added with a laugh.

A new movie documents how Harleen Sidhu, from humble beginnings in Surrey, grew up to make basketball history in the“PressU.S. Breaker” tells the story of Sidhu and her journey to became the first South Asian Canadian woman to play NCAA Division 1 basketball, and also the first Punjabi woman in the league. A 22-minute version of the film aired nationally on OMNI Television Saturday (Aug. 20) and will again Aug. 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. Family members, coaches, reporters and others are interviewed for “Press Breaker,” launched in 2021 as a Telus Storyhive project directed by Paneet Singh.Sidhu grew up in the game and was inspired by her father, Jay, who edControversyret’sPrincessthenelementarysafirstcourt.wearfirstJay1980s.ondaryNorthbasketballchampionship-levelplayedwithSurreySec-intheearlyInthemovie,sayshewastheplayerinB.C.toaturbanontheYoungHarleenworeaKhal-Lionsjerseyinschool,transferredtoMarga-Grade8team.erupt-whenshewas banned for playing too many minutes with a senior squad. The media reported the story of a young player who’d been “benched by bureaucrats,” and lawyers got involved. It was a major event in Sidhu’s basketball life, which continued at Fleetwood Park Secondary during her senior years. One day at practice she tore her PCL ligament, an injury that later cut her career short as a Cornhusker in Nebraska, where Sidhu had struggled with culture shock. In 2014 she ended up coming back “home” to play at UBC for another two seasons and inspire young Khalsa students who cheered herNowon.a nurse, Sidhu and husband Manny Dulay coach a Tamanawis Secondary team and run the XV Training Academy. For games, the White Rock Titans organization helped out by offering turf at South Surrey Athletic, Lobelsohn explained. “Using their second field will get us through this period,” he said. “It’s a juggle, for sure. We don’t have many choices in Surrey. Cloverdale Athletic and South Surrey Athletic are the only real football parks where we can play football in Surrey, at this time. It’s just the way it is.” Track clubs will also be moving out of Bear Creek Park during construction of the $23-million grandstand. Richmond-based Heatherbrae Builders pitched the lowest bid to build the structure. Surrey city council approved the construction contract to the company on July 25. Plans are to build a new “destination athletics centre” for Surrey, with grandstand seating for 2,200 people (two-thirds covered) and possible expansion of another 1,000 temporary seats. Originally, the new facility was to include a synthetic turf field, but the latest news is that grass will now be installed in the oval, and that concerns the football association. Said Lobelsohn: “We’re hoping for turf, which is the way to go to keep our kids playing throughout the year, especially during the wet weather like we got last fall.”

Tom Zillich tom.zillich@surreynowleader.com

“They’ve given two years for this, and it’s kind of changed a couple of times,” Lobelsohn said Friday (Aug. 19). “We’re told that as of Labour Day, the oval at Bear Creek Park will be closed, as well as the side field that we usually use for practice, so essentially they’re forcing us away from Bear Creek Park for however long it takes to build the stadium.”Lobelsohn called it “growing pains” for the association, active since the 1960s. “We’ll go from having two practice fields there (at Bear Creek) from 6 to 10 at night, to one practice field at Tom Binnie, from 5 to 10 p.m. Five o’clock isn’t easy for parents, who work too, right. We’ll have nine teams on the one field so we’ll be experimenting with staggered starts and see how we can ad just to make it work for everybody.”

The next few seasons will mean some schedule juggling and travel for teams with North Surrey Minor Football. Construction of the new grandstand and track at Bear Creek Park has the youth sports organization on the move to South Surrey Athletic Park for “home” games, with practices shifted to a single field at Tom Binnie Park.

But first, the association’s annual Joe Connelly Bronze Boot tournament will be played on the grass at Bear Creek Park on the weekend of Aug. 27 and 28, in the final football games there before work crews move in, starting in September. In six divisions, both flag and tackle, two dozen teams are registered for the tournament, now in its 53rd year. The longest running pre-season football tournament in B.C., the Bronze Boot traditionally kicks off the season for Vancouver Mainland Football League (VMFL), which gets going the following week. Playing home games in South Surrey isn’t ideal for North Surrey Minor Football, but president Robert Lobelsohn says there aren’t many options for the club.

Turf is more expensive than grass, Lobelsohn acknowledged, “but the cost is all front-loaded and the upkeep is much less over its lifetime. It almost makes no sense to put it back to grass, because then you have to mow it and have to water it, and that all costs money. A turf field, you don’t mow it or water it.”

Bazira, 19, earned top spot in the audience-voted free style street dance competi tion, held on the weekend of Aug. 6 and 7 during Vancou ver Mural Festival. The dancers were judged in head-to head battles, round by round, through live voting by the viewing audience, until four winners were chosen to move on to the next stage of this global competition. Bazira, known as “Hu muzza” in the dance world, will now fly to Toronto for the national finals on Fri day (Aug. 26), as will fellow Surrey residents Jayda “Jay derade” Bhinder and Tegva ran Sooch, along with Van couver-based dancer Sophia “Sosa” Laurio. The Canadian competition winner will later battle danc ers from around the world in Johannesburg, South Africa. Bazira has been dancing for more than five years, starting at Sullivan Heights Secondary. “I started out with a be ginner class at my school and from there I joined the school hip-hop team and also a team outside of school,” he recalled.“Ijoined a team called Megabots, which I’m still on right now. I’ve done various competitions and battles.”

Sobia Moman Black Press Media Student-athletes volunteer to paint graffiti-filled wall

High school rugby team pitches in for community

“My grandfather, who started this business in 1978, passed away this year, so I was thinking something to attribute the Canadian dream… My grandfather came with nothing but his suitcase and a sausage that they confiscated at the border,” Docolas said, adding that his grandfather’s struggles led to the whole family having a successful business they are proud to run.

Members of a high school rugby team got together on a recent Monday afternoon in a “fun community restoration” project to cover-up an act of vandalism in South Surrey. The side of a building in Ocean Park was the victim of spray-painted vandalism on July 21, which prompted community members to take action.

The boys who volunteered that Monday were Luke Colabella, Ken Liu, Sam Michaluk, Jake Dumoulin, Aiden Sham, James Gold, Ryder Brookes, Jacob Spence, Kai and Tak Nagamatsu, Tristan Kristol, Liam Stroud, Easton Hartshorne, Evan Baker and Keegan Sheridan. A lesson that he has worked to teach the boys, and one they have learned well, is to give back the same amount that they get, Docolas said. To deter further vandalism and instead create something beautiful with the large blank canvas, Docolas has a plan. He is searching for a local mural artist to transform the wall. “We don’t have a stop light in our little town… This is one of the only things you see as you drive by,” Docolas said.

Luke Colabella is held up by his teammates, Sam Michaluk, Aiden Sham and Evan Baker to reach the tallest areas of the graffiti-filled wall they painted over. (Sobia Moman photo)

Nico Docolas, an owner of Ocean Park Pizza and Village Pub called out for assistance, asking residents to point him in the direction of a company that could clean up the unwanted paint.“The youth from Elgin Park’s (rugby team) said, ‘Why hire somebody when we would be happy to help you guys out and make sure our community looks how we want it to look?’” DocolasDocolasrecalled.also coaches rugby, from Grade 8 to 12, making him even more proud that 15 of the Elgin Park Secondary Orcas willingly volunteered their time.

Created during a jam a couple years ago, “Just for the Night” is “an indie-rock anthem, chock full of rushing percussion, and lead by an electric hook that resembles a 60s surfer wave, stamped with a modern flare,” according to a news release from Eric Alper, the powerhouse music publicist and Twitter pillar. The band website (toomuchofanything. ca) shows photos of the trio at sites around White Rock, including Wyland’s famous “whale wall.” The band Too Much of Anything in a promo photo.

In March, Dhillon became one of two successful recipients of the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Fellowship in Advancement provided by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE); a national award to support a professional starting a career in educational fundraising.

As a result of the fellowship, Dhillon will spend one-year receiving mentorship from the KPU external affairs team while building on her practical fundraising skills. This will include placements with KPU’s alumni affairs, advancement, and marketing and communications departments. By rotating through these placements, Dhillon will gain a complete understanding of how a variety of departments collaborate on philanthropic objectives.

Developing support for community causes can be challenging. Fortunately, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) alumna Jaya Dhillon is unphased by this challenge. Her dedication to supporting communities started as an adolescent, where Dhillon developed a strong passion for philanthropy. From feeding the less fortunate to volunteering with BC Children’s Hospital, Dhillon has “always wanted to give back.” This dedication made KPU a natural choice for Dhillon, where she met “a lot of peers that were similar and helped each other out on projects and assignments in a more community-based environment.”Inaddition to a positive educational experience at KPU, Dhillon developed new skills that allowed her philanthropic passion to flourish. Through a bachelor of arts in anthropology, Dhillon gained hands-on skills in communication and analyzing cultures; equipping her to connect and resonate with a variety of community audiences. These skills proved to be powerful during her involvement with the student body, beginning as the inaugural students with disabilities representative for the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA). Dhillon used this appointment to advocate for increased parity for students with disabilities. This would involve voicing concerns and opinions for initiatives localized in Surrey alongside national level projects, which would be continued through her later role as the president of the KSA. Dhillon regarded both roles as notable experiences, since she “became more involved in the communities and academia.” In addition to using her skills serving the student body, Dhillon applied them as a student intern through KPU’s office of advancement. As an intern, Dhillon contributed to the office’s Giving Tuesday campaign that focused on supporting KPU students who experience financial challenges. Through developing a theme titled “Mosaic,” Dhillon successfully portrayed the diverse range of students that cumulate to create KPU’s unique background in Surrey and beyond; while contributing to the $101,000 raised throughout theLookingcampaign.tothe future, Dhillon is enthusiastic about a career in fundraising. Specifically, she is proud to continue her contributions to the Surrey community through a fellowship placement at KPU’s Surrey campus.

“It lets me give back to KPU, which is the most exciting part as it is a great community that has done so much for me.” With her strong dedication, Dhillon’s bright future as a next generation leader is fueled through a unique KPU education, where thought meets action. For Next Gen KPU alumna Jaya Dhillon is enthusiastic about a career in fundraising. (Submitted)

A Surrey wrestler is bringing home a silver medal from the Commonwealth Games after landing on the podium earlier this month. Ana Godinez Gonzalez, an Earl Marriott Secondary alum who wrestled at both Simon Fraser University and the University of the Fras er Valley (UFV) after high school, earned a silver medal in the women’s 62-kg division. She advanced to the title bout after earning victories over Scotland’s Abbie Fountain – a win that came via ‘technical superiority’ – and Nigeria’s Esther Kolawole in a 10-4 decision. In the final, Godinez Gonzalez lost to India’s Sakshi Malik. Godinez Gonzalez is no stranger to the podium at big events. In 2019, while at UFV, she won a pair of titles at Canadian Wrestling Championships, and in November 2021, she won gold at U23 World Wrestling Championships after more than a year away from competition due to the pandemic.Earlier in the Commonwealth Games, which were held in Birmingham, England from July 28 to Aug.8, another South Surrey athlete won a medal – Semiahmoo Secondary grad Tara Wallack won gold with Canada’s three-on-three women’s basketball team. Canada defeated England in the final to claim top spot in that tournament. Nick Greenizan Surrey’s
