The West Kootenay isn’t getting any younger.

Demographic data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday as part of the 2021 Census shows the region’s residents are creeping up in age.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), which includes Nelson, Castlegar and Creston, has an average age of 46.6 years old. That’s up slightly from the average of 45.8 years reported in the 2016 Census.

Residents of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), which includes Trail and Grand Forks, remained 47 years.

The region skews older than both the national average of 41.9 years and the B.C. average of 43.1 years.

Grand Forks and Creston, however, each saw slight drops in average age. Creston is the oldest Kootenay municipality with a population over 4,000, but saw

its age get slightly younger since 2016 by moving from 52.2 years old to 51.7. Grand Forks, meanwhile, fell from 50.4 years to 48.7.

Nelson remained the youngest population in the West Kootenay with an average age of 43, up slightly from 42.5 years in 2016.

There were also 20 centenarians living in the West Kootenay in 2021, with 15 residing in the RDCK. While the West Kootenay may have an older population, it also follows a national trend with one in five Canadians now aged 65 or older. The population of seniors aged 85 and older grew in Canada by 12 per cent since 2016.

Poultry at a West Kootenay residence have been found to have domestic avian influenza, the latest case in B.C. as the

contagious virus continues to spread.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has placed the property under quarantine while producers within 12 kilometres have

been notified of the test results, according to a statement Friday by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

The ministry did not say where the

residence is, except that it is within the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The regional district includes the Nelson, Castlegar and Creston areas.

Daughter of Cranbrook woman slain in mistaken identity murders shocked at not guilty verdict

Randi Hill was shocked last week when a B.C. Supreme Court justice found the two men accused of killing her mother in cold blood not guilty of the charges they faced.

The Chilliwack resident was in the courtroom for the decision in the case of a mistaken identity double homicide on May 29, 2010, outside Cranbrook.

Hill’s mother Leanne MacFarlane and Leanne’s partner Jeffrey Todd Taylor were in their home in a rural area east of Cranbrook when they were the victims of what was allegedly supposed to be a targeted gang hit on a former resident of the address.

Eight years later in June 2018, Colin Raymond Correia and Sheldon Joseph Hunter were arrested and later charged with two counts each of first degree murder.

The trial took 150 days and

faced several delays leading up to the judgement in B.C. Supreme Court on April 25 of this year.

“I am not satisfied that the two accused persons are innocent,” Silverman said. “However, I am also not satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that they are guilty.”

Gasps could be heard in the public gallery when Justice Arne Silverman read his decision.

“It was terrible,” Hill told The Chilliwack Progress. “We thought we would go there and have some relief. [The trial] was three years long and it took almost 10 years for an arrest. We were already anxious and to have that be the verdict? No one pays for what happened. They are released.”

Hill, whose father also lives in Chilliwack, said the not guilty verdict was surprising to everyone in the courtroom.

“Throughout the whole trial we were under the impression that

Not only did the circumstantial evidence seem to point to a guilty verdict, Correia was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder of the same intended victim in 2012.

The judge’s brief summary of finding reasonable doubt

stemmed from three factors.

First, Silverman found that evidence raised a reasonable doubt about whether or not the two accused knew the intended target was not living at the residence.

The sole witness who testified that he saw the two accused before and after the killing was not credible.

And lastly, Hunter’s alibi evidence and his cellphone records reasonably suggested he was in a different place at the time of the murders.

But Hill said everyone was surprised about the acquittal.

“It‘s not like there was not enough evidence. It was 100 per cent them and they get no consequences for what they did. It doesn’t seem fair.”

Hill said the family was told the Crown would file an appeal of the decision but that has not been confirmed.

New child care spaces coming to Kaslo, Fruitvale

Kaslo’s Periwinkle Children’s Centre will add eight spaces for children 2.5 years to kindergarten.

A company hoping to start logging in the Argenta area north of Nelson in May will rely on a threeyear old court injunction to remove members of the group Last Stand West Kootenay, who have blocked the logging road for the past week.

The injunction, issued for Cooper Creek Cedar in B.C. Supreme Court in Nelson on Aug. 27, 2019, names four specific people “and persons unknown,” and “anyone else having knowledge of this order.” It orders them not to block the road.

The company’s woodlands manager Bill Kestell says he believes the injunction is still valid, even though the people on this year’s blockade may be different people from those on the road in 2019.

Kestell says the company plans to start logging as soon as possible, but it can’t do that until the RCMP enforces the injunction by removing or arresting those blocking it, which he expects will happen soon.

Miguel Pastor, 17, of Nelson, speaking for the people in a camp set up on the Salisbury Creek forest road, said on Apr. 28 that they aren’t going anywhere.

He said the blocking of the road, which the group prefers to call “holding space,” will be calmer and more peaceful than the recent protests at Fairy Creek.

“We’re going to be trying to hold a very calm and peaceful intent here and keep things civil and strong in a good way.”

In 2012, a deluge of mud, rocks and trees slid into the lake at Johnsons Landing, killing four people and destroying five homes.

It has been speculated that logging the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face might subject that area to a risk of a similar slide.

But Greg Utzig, a local ecologist who lives part of the year at Johnsons Landing and specializes in terrain stability, says the slide was not caused by logging or road building, and the geology of the two areas is different.

Provincial government response The provincial government says it has no plans to move the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face into the park.

When contacted by the Nelson Star, a forest ministry spokesperson said there are already protections in place for the ungulate winter range.

The email also states that “a significant amount of the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face is also protected by Old Growth Management Areas and other reserves as well as Visual Quality Objectives.”

Utzig said that old growth management areas across the province are disorganized and inaccurate.

In some of them there is no old growth, and in other locations, old growth exists unprotected. That Continued on Page A5

Utzig’s response: “I don’t believe that.”

Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson, asked for a comment, sent the following statement by email: “I have heard the concerns of people in my community about the area, and share a concern for our ecological values. I have been in touch with the Ministry of Forests and will be getting a full update on this issue in the coming days. Our government respects the right of people to protest within law.”

Old growth deferral In 2021, the B.C. government decided to map at-risk old growth forest in the province. It appointed an old growth technical advisory panel and tasked it with identifying and defining the province’s most at-risk old growth ecosystems. The Nelson scientist Rachel Holt was a member of the panel, which produced maps of 2.6 million hectares of old growth forest.

A spokesperson for the forest ministry told the Nelson Star in an email that the advisory committee identified 1.4 hectares of priority atrisk old growth in the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face, adding that “the province is prepared to implement deferrals if supported by the First Nations in their territories.”

The email also said that the province will support requests by local First Nations for deferrals, and that “the industry licencee” (Cooper Creek Cedar) has “committed to abide by any deferral decisions in place at the time of harvest.”

Contacted this week about the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face, Holt said there are reasons other than old growth to include the area in the park.

“That area is an obvious physical inclusion in the park, bringing the conservancy down to low elevation and providing a high-to-low elevation corridor of mature and some old growth. The

Castlegar man arrested after alleged gas station robbery, flight from police

Running out of gas in a stolen car outside of Fruitvale led to the arrest of an alleged robber who is now facing several criminal charges after police gave chase.

The alleged crime spree began April 21, just after 9 p.m. when a Salmo RCMP officer responded to a call about a robbery at the Centex Gas Station, in the 5000-block of Highway 3B, near Salmo.

According to police, the suspect, later identified as 35-year old Robert

Eyre of Castlegar, was accused of stealing items from the store while threatening to assault employees.

Before the Salmo RCMP arrived, police say Eyre fled the gas station in a stolen vehicle and headed toward Trail.

Trail RCMP became involved in the call and tracked down Eyre and the stolen vehicle nearer to Fruitvale.

The suspect fled back toward Salmo, but police report that he ran out of gas on the highway near Champion Lakes Road.

Officers actively searched the rural

area, found the stranded man, and arrested him without further incident.

With the three RCMP detachments teaming up to catch the alleged robber — Trail and Greater District, Salmo, and Castlegar — Eyre is facing seven criminal charges.

y phone rang while I was playing with my newborn and toddler in the basement on yet another hot and smoky day during last summer’s heat waves and wildfires.

I looked at the screen. Bill Lynch was calling. “Didn’t he just retire from building inspection? I wonder what he’s calling about,” I thought as I answered the phone and began walking upstairs.

“I have a friend, Javed,” Bill said in his distinct Dublin-Irish accent. “He and his family managed to get out of Afghanistan. They saw killings and beatings along the way.

“They’re now on the other side of the border, and my family’s trying to get them to Canada. I’m calling because I’m wondering if you have any advice.”

“My goodness…,” I said as I sat down on the living room sofa looking out over Kootenay Lake and the mountains, except I couldn’t see anything through the hot dense smoke. That heat and smoke had been making life miserable

for weeks, yet suddenly ceased being so bothersome.

My mind flashed to the pictures in the news where people squeezed into cargo planes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Mothers, like me, were in those crowds clutching their newborns as they refused to return to Taliban rule.

And for those who couldn’t make it out, the United Nations was projecting a 90 per cent poverty rate as the country’s struggling democracy fell.

“Does he have daughters, and a wife?

He must be terrified for their safety — they must be terrified — with the Taliban rolling back into government.”

Bill proceeded to tell me that Javed had a wife and daughters who couldn’t bare to live the dire life the Taliban forced onto women. On top of that, Javed was himself in danger. He had been working for a small American non-governmental organization building playgrounds for boys and girls to play on together – enough of a faux-pas for the Taliban’s extreme misogynist views that it put Javed at risk for their violence.

But then there was where Javed went to get the playground equipment. Amer-

ican military bases were often the easiest and most reliable place to send and pick up donated swings, slides and monkey bars. The number of military officers he’d see, other Afghan civilians he might have recognized, anything he considered trivial while picking up a see-saw now made him a target for Taliban “interrogation.”

“And you know Michelle,” Bill continued. “Javed truly is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.”

In 1998, Bill was on his second trip to the Middle East, quenching his thirst for region’s incredibly artistic buildings.

While wandering the streets of Peshawar, Pakistan, a city home to many Afghan refugees from that decade’s Taliban rule, he and his wife found themselves a bit lost. Naturally, they asked someone for directions. With a lovely, almost antique locution, that someone introduced himself in English, “My name is Javed.”

They didn’t get directions though.

They got a guide and a new friend instead.

Vote 1, democracy sausage for Canada SCOTT

hen I was little I remember my mother taking me along to vote at the local church in suburban Melbourne, Australia.

There were red and blue posters everywhere, and the smell of the nearby barbecue was overwhelming. I was very confused as to why we were at a church on a Saturday for a barbecue.

Being six at the time, I wasn’t that interested in what my mother was doing there (voting for someone that lost), but I did get to partake in the barbecue, and it was this experience which sold

me on the famous Australian ‘democracy sausage’ forever.

They’re not just a perk to soften up voters dragged out of bed on a Saturday morning – democracy sausages (usually just overcooked beef sausages) are an institution in and of themselves, and a staple of every respectable polling booth in Australia.

Chances are, the line at the barbecue is longer.

Waiting in a line that files past a few folding tables and a community-event appropriate barbecue, you hand over a dollar (or two if you want anything fancy, like onion), and you’re handed a single piece of white

bread on a napkin (serviette, in Australia). Onto that single piece of bread is placed a beef sausage.

Maybe you’ll add some onion, or maybe a squirt of watery tomato sauce.

For many, it’s the most important decision they’ll make that day.

Does it sound delicious or what?

It’s simple and straight to the point: Everything politics isn’t.

There’s something magical about getting up early every three years on a Saturday morning to do your duty as a good citizen: To donate a few dollars to the local church, or sports club, or technical school creative arts interpretive dance

troupe by buying a democracy sausage for 50 percent over market value, because you know the meat they’re cooking is from the bargain bin.

I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing a handful of elections here in Canada, and I must say I am unimpressed.

The options are appalling.

Such a disgrace to democracy.

Where is the barbecue?

So I begin my campaign here: Introduce the democracy sausage to Canada. Help increase voter participation by setting up a barbecue at polling places on election day.

Turnout in Canada is insultingly low. Given the noise on social media, I’d expect Canadians to be so motivated they’d vote

twice at every election they can.

Alas, numbers say otherwise.

At the last federal election turnout was only 62.3 percent. In BC in 2020, turnout was 54.4 percent. In the last municipal election in this corner of BC, turnout in Fernie was 64.2 percent. In Sparwood, only 41.6 percent.

This needs to change, posthaste. If a barbecue can motivate a few more percentages of folks to go vote, a barbecue is what’s needed.

In the last Australian federal election, turnout was over 91 percent. Sure, registering to vote is compulsory, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say numbers aren’t high because it’s the law, but because everyone gets

a democracy sausage.

Start a tradition Canada. For little six-year-old me, it meant a lot to have a weekend barbecue for seemingly no reason.

So much so, that I’ve looked forward to every election since.

Even as the faces on the posters changed along with the locations of the polling booths – tall old red church, low-slung creambrick school, disused shopfront – I think back to when I tagged along with my mother for the election where her guy lost, and when she spent a dollar to buy me a ‘democracy sausage’ so that I’d stop protesting.

For what it’s worth, it made me a committed voter.

Outdoor sports win out in poll to set future for Campbell Field

The outdoor elements have won in the poll to see what people prefer for the re-imagination of Campbell Field at South Slocan.

Over half of the people (57 per cent) who responded to an online poll indicated that a multi-activity development that makes use of outdoor amenities — with some respite from the weather — was a better fit for the community than one with an indoor focus.

That second option (of two) included: a full-size soccer field; track and field amenities; field house; basketball and tennis courts; splash pad; skate park; bike pump track; and park space.

The online voting process for the community began late last fall when the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) compiled two “high-level options” for the field, located halfway between Nelson and Castlegar at the highway junction.

Despite the result of the poll

the project is still far from being ready to go, with conversations to come with the students and staff at Mount Sentinel School, said Walter Popoff, Area H director.

“But I believe that what is presented in this concept will support the recreation goals of the community, for now and for generations to come,” he said in a press release on Friday.

The outdoor focus of the second option contains a building with a large activity space the size of a high school gymnasium, and a large roof-covered outdoor space for sport and performance.

There is less significant parking requirements with the second option and more outdoor sport and activity space.

Now that one of the options has been chosen a cost estimate will be developed for the concept, including capital costs — the cost to build the facility — and operating costs of how much money it will take to run the facility.

In addition, a site plan will be developed showing out-

door amenities and where the recreation facility will be situated.

Six years ago Campbell Field — located adjacent to Mount Sentinel Secondary School — was gifted to the regional district by the South Slocan Sports Association.

The association had owned the field since the 1930s when it was acquired from West Kootenay Power. Thanks to a covenant on the title of the property it has always been used for sports and cultural activities.

Popoff saw the potential for the field as a location for recreation development since it was a central location for many people in the RDCK. “The ability to satisfy the recreation needs of area residents is a great opportunity that we need to explore. This is a great gift that we have been given,” he said.

Nelson’s Jazmine Lowther wins California ultramarathon

Nelson ultramarathoner Jazmine Lowther stunned the field to win the Canyons 100 in California.

Lowther set a new course record by winning the 100 kilometre race in 10 hours one minute 54 seconds — just one second better than the previous mark.

Her performance on April 23 earned Lowther a berth in the prestigious Western States Endurance Run, a 161 km race that takes place June 25 to 26 in Olympic Valley, Calif.

At the Canyons 100 in nearby Auburn, Calif., Lowther finished well ahead of American runner-up Leah Yingling, who was 22 minutes behind.

Community volunteers remove wildfire fuel from Rail Trail

Forty volunteers joined a group of Nelson firefighters near Mountain Station on April 30 to clear wildfire fuel from both sides of the Rail Trail.

Volunteers spent three hours hauling dry wood that had been chainsawed into manageable pieces in advance by the fire department.

Forester John Cathro, who helped to supervise the one-day event, was struck my the enthusiasm and good humour in the group.

“We had volunteers saying, ‘Hey, where do we go next weekend?’”

“People were genuinely interested to contribute,” he said, “to learn about FireSmart, to be part of something that is being led by the fire chief, and stand shoulder to shoulder with their neighbours and contribute.”

For a stretch of the Rail Trail northwest of the Mountain Station parking lot, volunteers spread out in groups, each supervised by a member of the fire department, pulling dry branches and debris from the woods and placing them on the trail where the material would eventually be fed into a shredder.

The volunteers were treated to T-shirts, lunch and detailed safety instructions.

Wildfires spread most easily when they are fed by dry material on or near the ground.

The goal was to remove such debris at the edge of the city along the trail.

“To eliminate the ability for a wildfire to

travel – that was the goal for today,” said Nelson fire chief Len MacCharles, who organized the event.

The fire department plans to post educational material along the trail to educate walkers and bikers about Saturday’s work.

Cathro said dozens of dog walkers and cyclists passed the volunteers as they worked.

“I wasn’t conducting a scientific poll but at least at least one in three of the people who came by made a point of thanking the volunteers saying how good it looks,” Cathro said.

He said he hopes the cumulative impact on the passers-by, the volunteers, the people the volunteers tell about the event, and those who read the new educational signs, will all lead to people doing similar work on their own properties and volunteering Loki Tree Service, working with the fire department, gave instructions to the volunteers. “The goal was to create local FireSmart ambassadors,” said MacCharles. “I think we’ve really hit the mark on that one.

MacCharles, who will be retiring in a month, said he will be there as a volunteer next time, which he expects to be in the fall.

He said successful wildfire mitigation takes effort on many levels including provincial grant funding, municipal resources, and residents fire-smarting around their houses.

“And it takes these group efforts like we did on Saturday. It takes all those things to truly build your community’s wildfire resiliency. You can’t just do one or two.

Nelson Italian-Canadian Society celebrates 50 years Submitted by the Nelson Italian Canadian Society

The Nelson Italian Canadian Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary with sold-out banquet on Saturday, May 7 at the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club Hall.

The Kootenays have a long historical connection with Italian immigrants. Over the decades, many Italians ventured to the region looking for opportunities for a better life for themselves and their families. These eager immigrants established themselves in the Kootenay communities working for the railroad, lumber mills, industry, and mines. Some also ventured into the realm of commerce, setting up storefronts to serve the recent immigrants.

In the early 1970s, several recent immigrants to Nelson began conversing about the need and desire to establish a cultural group. Trail with its larger Italian population had such organizations for several decades and the Italian-Canadian citizens of Nelson felt the desire to develop something similar.

April 11, 1972 saw the foundation of the Nelson Italian-Canadian Society – Società Italo-Canadese di Nelson (NICS). What began as a fraternal lodge to promote Italian culture in Nelson eventually grew into an organization that included fundraising efforts for community initiatives and charities.

Humble beginnings Albert Maida began phoning Italians in the community to see if there was interest in forming an Italian club. The response was

positive. The first meeting was held at DiBella Electric with several individuals in attendance, some as young as 24 years old. Albert was elected as the founding president.

The first executive included Maida as president, vice-presidents Frank DiBella and Gordon Correale, secretary John Malito, and treasurer Bill Freno. The executive was rounded out with directors Sebastian Amenta, Armando Maglio, Gus DeVuono, Fiore Milinazzo, Cosimo Chirico, Mike DeMeo, Mike DeGirolamo, Kennedy Facchina and Pete Lisanti.

A constitution and bylaws were established and the task of translating the document from English into Italian was completed by Ada Porco. This allowed members who did not have full command of the English language to read it in their native tongue.

Within the early days of the society, the founding executive had no problem signing up 86 members.

Most of the members had emigrated to Canada during the 1950s and 1960s. There were a handful who were first-generation Canadians, having been born here.

The Nelson Italian Lodge, as it was first known, evolved into the Società Italo-Canadese di Nelson/ Nelson Italian-Canadian Society.

It provided the recent immigrants with a support network to deal with a new country and language as well as a social group to maintain various aspects of Italian culture.

The society held meetings on alternating Sundays at the Hume Hotel with regular turnouts of 70 or more members, each ready to

debate the shape and direction the group would take. The keen interest of the members made getting on the executive a challenge with several people running for each position a standard affair.

The society was initially a male-only group. It has since expanded membership to include women of Italian ancestry and spouses/partners of members in good standing. Membership peaked in 1986-87 at 120 as the children of the Italian immigrants in Nelson came of age, while the original old guard was still around.

The NICS is perhaps best known for its great banquets and dances.

In its first year, a party at Mary Hall drew over 400 people. This first event set the standard where getting tickets to these popular events became very challenging as they sold out quickly.

The NICS today One of the society’s long-held goals was to have a venue of its own to hold meetings and events.

In recent years, the society entered into a mutual agreement with the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club.

The NICS invested in extensive renovations at the club’s building that resulted in a fully operable commercial kitchen and adjoining storage areas. This partnership satisfied the society’s need for a place to meet and hold its events.

NICS annual events include the Festa del Vino/Wine Contest and Banquet, Society Members’ picnic, a bocce tournament, and Members’ Christmas Party. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the society expanded fundraising events to

include sales of homemade Italian sausages and spaghetti sauce, Italian pizzelle cookies, and grapes and juice for winemaking.

Over the years, the Nelson Italian-Canadian Society has raised funds for and been involved in many local, national, and international initiatives and projects, including Lakeside Pathway project, Gamma probe machine fundraiser, L.V. Rogers scholarships, Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, Variety Club Show of Hearts, CT scanner fundraiser, Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day wreath, Canadian Red Cross disaster relief (earthquake, tsunami, flooding), Nelson KidSport, Nelson Minor Hockey, MS Society, Nelson Community Food Centre, Nelson Rhythm Ropers, Lakeside Rotary playground, Lakeside bocce courts, Trafalgar breakfast program, and Our Daily Bread.

Celebrating 50 years The society is pleased that with the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions, they will be able to host their 50th Anniversary Banquet.

Membership in the society has ebbed and flowed over the years.

Recently the society has seen a growth in membership with numerous new members joining.

A Nelson veteran has been posthumously honoured for his service in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Master Warrant Officer Arnold Broster served 25 years in the Navy and was among the Canadians who joined United Nations forces during the Korean War. Broster’s death on May 28, 2021, was determined to be related to asbestos exposure on Canadian ships.

The Memorial Cross, or Silver Cross, was awarded in his name to his wife Jean Broster at her birthday last month.

The award, created in March 1919, is given to loved ones of military members who died in service to Canada.

Another major accomplishment from the past strategic plan was the evolution from the Nelson Food Cupboard into the Nelson Community Food Centre. As a centre, the NCFC has grown from a basic food bank to a full-fledged food centre with Good Food Bank, Food Skills, Harvest Rescue and Garden programs.

This wide array of programming allows the NCFC to better serve program participants and provides them with new skills and a sense of belonging — all with dignity. Partnership with the Community Food Centres Canada network also links the organization to 13 like-minded organizations across the country.

Volunteers remove 7,000-plus pounds of trash from Kootenay Lake shoreline in Nelson Submitted by Friends of walkers and beach Kootenay Lake Steward- goers who frequent ship Society

Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society hosted an Earth Day cleanup on April 22 where over 60 volunteers removed more than 7,000 pounds of scrap metal and trash from the shoreline between Lakeside Park and the old Kootenay Forest Products site in Nelson.

The initiative was a response to multiple complaints from dog

the area.

Volunteers of all ages came together on this sunny Friday, eager to lend a hand and give these shorelines a fresh start for spring.

In a matter of minutes, buckets were filled to the top. Most of the trash they collected was scrap metal, but other items included a car seat, a sink, grocery carts, car tires, and an abandoned boat.

“It was such a wonderful turn out,” said environmental outreach co-ordinator Joelle Burnie.

“Seeing so many eager and passionate people come together was so inspiring. This cleanup goes to show that when we put our hands together, change happens, and happens fast. We are grateful for our volunteers and there is no way we could do this work without them.”

Garbage pollution continues to be a significant issue around the lake, negatively impacting wildlife and other lake inhabitants and visitors. Friends of Kootenay Lake hosts cleanups year-round as one of their many stewardship initiatives. It aims to bring like-minded individuals together, decrease risks to the lake ecosystem, and spread awareness of the pollution issue.

Cleanups are especially important this time of year because the water levels are low, making trash and other debris visible and accessible to remove.

Place Names

Reserve, litigation stunted New Denver’s early growth

Three hundredth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The land on which most of New Denver was built was staked by Angus McGillivray in October 1891. But before he could do anything with it, a government reserve was placed on the mouth of Carpenter Creek to keep land speculation in check.

The fledgling city of Eldorado grew up haphazardly on the site anyway, until the government sent Charles E. Perry to head up a proper survey the following year.

The townsite that Perry’s team plotted straddled Carpenter Creek and consisted of north-south avenues Eldorado and Bellevue, plus east-west First through Seventh, with Slocan Avenue falling between Fifth and Sixth. Some existing cabins and shacks had to be removed, as they fell in the middle of the new streets.

With an auction of lots in July 1892 came a name change, from Eldorado to New Denver.

• The townsite only represented part of the land McGillivray staked. After the government quietly lifted its reserve in September 1892, McGillivray hired Perry to survey the rest of his property.

Bay, first mentioned in The Ledge of March 14, 1895, although it’s not officially recognized.

• The portion of the townsite south of Carpenter Creek was known informally as Union Bay in the early 1900s, but during the Japanese-Canadian internment, it was called The Orchard after the fruit trees that grew there.

The name remains in use.

The earliest reference yet discovered (although doubtless there are earlier ones) is from The New Canadian, Aug. 3, 1946: “The once congested Japanese settlement in the ‘orchard’ is now but a ghost of its former self …”

• Denver Siding (or Denver Canyon Siding) was the stop closest to New Denver on the Nakusp and Slocan Railway, first mentioned in the Nakusp Ledge of Dec. 13, 1894: “A freight shed is being built by the railway company at Denver siding.”

Denver Siding today consists of Denver Siding Road, Atlantic Street, and 10A Street. It finally joined village limits in 2021. Oddly, it’s not recognized as an official name.

This ad for the Bigelow Addition to New Denver appeared in the Nelson Tribune on Dec. 1, 1892.

However, ownership of McGil- this land adjoining McGillivray’s in livray’s Addition was disputed and 1891, but it was initially caught up resulted in extensive litigation before in the government reserve. No map of this addition is known to survive, a settlement was reached.

When the map was finally deposited but we know one of its streets was with the land registry in early 1894, it named Wardner.

Lots were offered free “to business added north-south avenues Josephine, Kildare, Union, Kootenay, Columbia, men and prospectors who will agree Victoria, Vancouver, and Pacific plus to erect business houses or residences eighth through 11th streets on the thereon within a reasonable time.”

Despite claims to the contrary, none west and Galena Avenue on the east.

Also, a 1958 map reveals some more lost Castlegar street names.

Thirteenth Avenue was once Front Avenue. Wood Street, which connected Columbia Avenue and 3rd Street, has disappeared.

Fifth, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th streets were Elm, Green, Hemlock, Juniper, and Laurel streets, respectively.

Twelfth Street was Purcell Street, 13th Street was Cascade Street, and 15th Street was Kokanee Street. In the Oglow subdivision, Chickadee Lane was formerly Castlegar Lane.

KOOTENAIAN, REVISITED We’ve previously looked at Kootenaian, the word once commonly used to refer to people from the Kootenay.

It fell out of use after a newspaper of the same name folded in 1969.

It was thought the same newspaper coined the term in 1895. However, an isolated, earlier example is found in a subheadline in the Spokane Chronicle of March 18, 1891: “Very indignant Kootenaians.”

The story said locals were mad at the Vancouver Board of Trade for petitioning parliament not to grant any more railway charters in the Kootenay.

Nelson Women’s Centre calls for guaranteed livable income for women

This morning, women from the Nelson and District Women’s Centre gathered to display a banner in front of the Nelson Courthouse calling for a guaranteed livable income (GLI).

“Poverty remains a significant issue for women,” said Terri-Lynn Wilkinson, executive director of the Women’s Centre. “Every day at the centre, we see women in greater need because of the pandemic and other global events.

GLI is the solution for women, and for men.”

The banner dropping in Nelson was part of a province-wide action led by the BC Women’s Alliance. In Prince George, Powell River, Vancouver, Victoria and other cities, banners were hung calling for economic security for women.

Currently, two federal bills are being debated

in the Canadian Parliament: Bill S-233 at the Senate and Bill C-223 at the House of Commons. Both bills call for the development of a national framework for a guaranteed livable income, to be created in consultation with representatives of the provincial governments.

“A guaranteed livable income will ensure everyone in Canada has an adequate and dignified standard of living,” said Zabree MacInnis, co-chair of the Nelson Women’s Centre. “We saw how nimble the government can be during the pandemic and now is the time for more action on the growing poverty issue.”

The BC Women’s Alliance is calling on MPs from B.C. constituencies to support the bills so that they become law, and on the B.C. provincial government to co-operate with the consultation process until the desired national framework is achieved.

What if you were signed up in an indigenous literatures college course and received this prompt: “write a poem that reflects indigenous and settler relationships”. Where would you begin?

Well, that depends on the nature of your starting point, doesn’t it? I propose you’d need to learn to see into at least two worlds, the settler landscape and the indigenous paradigm. According to Shawn Wilson, in Canadian Journal of Native Education “An Indigenous paradigm comes from the [unifying] fundamental belief that knowledge is relational, is shared with all creation, and therefore can not be owned or discovered. [Decolonizing] indigenous research methods [in all fields of study] tend to reflect these beliefs and the obligations they imply”. Taking on this new-to-me lens required that I: a) suspend judgement, b) take stock of my assumptions, and c) be willing to take a stroll in someone else’s shoes, if only for a semester. In loving memory of John Nesteroff October 28, 1950 – April 21, 2022 Longtime local schoolteacher John Nesteroff died April 21 at Columbia View Lodge in Trail at age 71.

Johnny and his twin sister Marie were born in Nelson on Oct. 28, 1950 to John and Mary (Zaytsoff) Nesteroff. He lived throughout the Slocan Valley during his youth and was a great ball player who also enjoyed badminton and other sports.

His love of physical activity later showed up in his career as a gym teacher and in his passion for mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, weeding the garden, and chopping wood. He further delighted in dancing and foraging for suziki.

John graduated from Mount Sentinel Secondary and attended Selkirk College, where he was student union president. He earned his bachelor of arts and bachelor of education from Notre Dame University in Nelson, where he was in the final graduating class.

His long teaching career began in 1974 in Strathnaver, followed by elementary schools in Quesnel, Ootischenia, Blueberry, Tarrys, and Kinnaird. His best years were spent at Tarrys where he taught primary grades and coached school sports. He retired in 2009, the year he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

He often borrowed materials from his school to bring home to his sons, for whom he would have done anything. He made a mean spaghetti sauce and the creamiest hot chocolate.

In retirement, he loved piecing puzzles together, playing cribbage and reading Iskra. He expressed his love of music through Doukhobor choir, his record collection, his powerful whistle, his tapping toes and snappy fingers.

He was quick to share both jokes and his wit.

John is survived by sons Greg (Minette Winje)

of Trail and Kliph of Los Angeles; sisters Nina (Walter Hoodikoff) and Marie (Ken Kinakin) of Grand Forks; Mary, the mother of his children, of Nelson; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Burial took place April 25 in the Slocan Park cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Mountain Lake Seniors Community and Columbia View Lodge, where John spent his final years; Alexandra Butts and Zachary Schmidt of Castlegar Funeral Chapel, which had care of the arrangements; Peter Barisoff and Leonard Markin of the Slocan Park cemetery; and Bill Popoff and Peter Zaetsoff of the USCC men’s group.

Katherine (Katy) Reyden was born in Bassano, Alberta. Her family emigrated from the Ukraine to Canada a few years before her birth, living and working on their family sponsors farm in Alberta before moving to the lower mainland to start a farm of their own.

Katy and her six siblings grew up with many hardships working on a chicken farm which taught her to be the strong woman she was.

Katy met her husband Doug in Prince George where she was going to university and they were married in 1971. Doug and Katy moved to the Kootenays in 1977, settling down in Beasley on a large property to start their family.

Many days were spent landscaping the yard, creating beautiful gardens, a fish pond, boating on Kootenay Lake and generally enjoying the Kootenay lifestyle.

Katy was a gentle soul with a warm heart.

She had a love for her family which was the world to her. She spent many days with her grandchildren taking them for walks to the river, spoiling them with yummy treats that she would bake, and giving them all the love and hugs they could ask for. Katy was a very artistic woman and loved gardening, crafting, creating beautiful mosaics, rugs and painting pictures.

She taught at Blewett elementary school for many years, touching countless kids’ lives with her kind soul.

Katy passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer in Kaslo, BC. She was predeceased by her husband Doug in 2012 and is survived by her sons Jeff (Jodie), Mark (Kat), Brian (Tia) and 5 beautiful grandchildren Isaiah, Hayden, Nathan, Lucas and Kiera. She was a beautiful woman and we will all miss her warm smiles and big hugs.

We would like to give a big thank you to all the kind nurses who looked after her in Nelson and Kaslo for the last month of her life. As per her request there will be no service.

Launching rockets with Nelson’s air cadets Submitted by 561 Nelson Osprey Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets

The Nelson air cadets spent last Saturday launching model rockets. The rockets were launched at the West Kootenay Model Aircraft Club’s airfield near the Kootenay Canal and reached heights of 152 metres.

The rockets were assembled during the cadets regular in-person meeting the previous Wednesday. This was an opportunity for the cadets to learn about the basics of rocket design and see their rockets fly.

The Nelson air cadets are once again meeting in-person and have several activities planned for the rest of the train-

ing year. Over the summer, cadets will be participating in summer training locally and at Cadet Training Centres located across Canada.

Air cadets meet every Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Nelson Eagles Hall. More information can be found at www.nelsonaircadetsa.ca, on the squadrons Facebook page at www.facebook.com/561NelsonOspreyAirCadets/ or by calling Major DeBiasio at 250-231-0710.

Foundry supports youth in living a good life Foundry offers free health and wellness resources, services and supports for young people ages 12-24 – online and in-person through 11 Foundry centres across BC.

Aslam (he/they) & Lee (she/they) – Provincial Youth Advisors, writers with Foundry BC It’s July 2019 and the sun is beaming in Aslam’s life. They’ve just graduated and like many others, have hopes for a bright future in the big city – being openly queer and comfortable, making new friends, and being immersed in the multicultural downtown square.

One year later, when COVID-19 became a global pandemic, the isolation caused their mental health to worsen and along with it, a rising battle with substance use, making it near impossible for Aslam to access resources.

“At first, I wasn’t even aware that I was at my worst,” Aslam recalls. “I was so used to my routine: wake up, still feeling numb and empty, pack a bowl and take a couple of tokes out of my bedroom window, then go back to sleep. It was intense denial and numbing.”

Last summer, Aslam gained the courage to reach out and receive help for their substance use and mental health challenges. They went to Foundry, an integrated youth service that provides mental health care, substance use services, physical and sexual health care, youth and family peer support and social services for young people ages 12-24 and their families/caregivers across BC. “I was struggling my whole life and thought that self-medicating with drugs and alcohol was easier than speaking about what I had gone through,” says Aslam. Over the last couple of months, they also worked with doctors and peer support workers to begin taking medications, speaking to a physician regularly and learning harm reduction strategies.

Similarly, Lee, a Foundry provincial youth advisor alongside Aslam, also experienced worsening mental health during the pandemic. As Foundry provincial youth advisors, both Aslam and Lee share their perspectives to make

Foundry services youth-friendly and inclusive to others.

“Foundry is different from a lot of other places—it’s a community shaped by youth with diverse, living experiences,” Lee shares. “To those of you who feel isolated or lonely – know that you are not alone. I felt stuck for a long time and with help, I realized the way I had been living was not the path I had to follow.”

“When I went to Foundry, I was accepted,” says Aslam. “I didn’t need to explain why I made the choices I did because they already knew why, and they didn’t care. They just wanted me to feel supported and loved.”

At Foundry, no problem is too small or too big. Young people can walk into a local Foundry centre, explore online tools and resources at foundrybc.ca, or connect virtually through the Foundry BC app.

Actors, production staff needed for Nelson theatre show Submitted by Kootenay Musical Theatre Society

Donuts of Mass Destruction, the Kootenay Musical Theatre Society production written by Doug Jamieson, is looking for three performers to round out the cast for the June 17 to 19 run.

The show will be staged in Cottonwood Falls Park using different locations for the six scenes.

Since the audience moves from scene to scene, actors are only required to perform in one scene!

Consequently, rehearsals will only involve two performers.

The show was fully cast in 2021, when the show was postponed due

to a COVID-19 spike. Almost all cast members are on board for the June run, with the exception of the following paid positions: One Narrator-Guide, two actor-puppeteers, one actor and two young singers (recording only).

In addition, there are openings for production team members (also paid positions) for set assembly and disassembly, and lighting.
