Downtown Cranbrook is the major commercial centre of the East Kootenay region and the largest city in British Columbia’s southeast interior. Duck into downtown off the busy Highway 3 that passes through and see what’s happening. Downtown Cranbrook is a place to relax, to take advantage of our numerous green spaces, urban biking and walking trails, our bustling shops and our fine dining experiences. There is a wide range of sushi restaurants, a famous brewpub and family restaurant, health food and organic grocery stores, coffee, books, music, and of course, if you’re planning your escapade into the mountains and the backcountry, or a biking excursion on our famous trails, there are numerous suppliers of all the gear you need. Make us your home base. Just pull in through the famous arches that straddle the main street entering our downtown off the highway. This landmark Arches replicate an original set that straddled the highway from the 1930s to the 1950s. A project of the Downtown Business Association, the new arches are especially intended to welcome visitors. No doubt you’ll notice Cranbrook Ed, a sculpture by Tony and Twila Austin which commemorates a pachyderm of the same name. The elephant was one of several who escaped from a visiting circus in the 1920s, and the last to be retrieved after a period of wandering the local woods. Some might say Ed is an unofficial symbol of Cranbrook. Downtown Cranbrook is also the site of the landmark Clocktower Square, the historic Studio Stage Door theatre facility, our vibrant farmer’s market, and the chance to take in some historic residential architecture, preserved over the more than 100 years of Cranbrook’s past and on display via a heritage walking or driving tour. The Cranbrook Public Library is open seven days a week, the Western Financial Place recreation facility and aquatic centre is just a short stroll away, and there’s always something happening in Rotary Park, the heart of downtown. Further on down Highway 3 is the expansive Tamarack Centre mall, and across the way is a complex of shopping facilities which means Cranbrook is your stop for all the supplies you need for your British Columbia holiday.
