New NCO for Barriere RCMP Detachment By Jill Hayward North Thompson Star/Journal New NCO at the Barriere RCMP Detachment is Cpl. Steve Mancini who officially took over from Cpl Darin Underhill last Monday. Mancini and his family hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The corporal says both he and his wife were born and raised in the prairie province, and most recently made the move to Barriere with their two young children “...to find some adventure”. “I wanted to do the department commander role,” said Mancini, who joined the force at age 20 and now has 13 years of police work under his belt. He comes with a range of experience that includes small towns and First Nations policing, special investigations, and a stint with a plain clothes investigation unit looking into gangs in Winnipeg. “I’m kind of a ‘Jack of all trades’,” said Mancini. Asked why he joined the RCMP so young, the corporal stated his dad served with the RCMP for 35 years until retirement, and his sister is an RCMP officer currently stationed in Kamloops. “It’s in the family.”

Rain helps cool forest fire situation in B.C. By Cam Fortems Kamloops This Week KTW photographer Allen Douglas took to the skies with firefighting personnel to get a bird’s-eye view of the Coldstream Creek fire south of Ashcroft. More of his photos can be seen below. Cool and wet weather over the weekend knocked back three area fires that had threatened structures. Both the Adams Lake West fire and Coldstream Creek fire, south of Ashcroft, are 100 per cent contained. The Bolean Lake fire, which threatened cabins and a fishing resort in the moun-

Cpl. Steve Mancini is the new NCO in charge at the Barriere RCMP Detachment as of July 27. Although the new NCO has only spent a short time in the community, and a few busy days at the detachment,

he is enthusiastic about the posting, “I really like the town, and we are excited to be here.”

Monday MVA’s keep police busy By Jill Hayward North Thompson Star/Journal RCMP were busy on Monday, July 27, with two motor vehicle accidents in the Barriere area. Early in the day an accident took place on Highway 5 in front of the antique store at Louis Creek. RCMP Corporal Steve Mancini says the investigation into the accident is still ongoing, but it appears that sudden braking from a vehicle turning off the highway into the store resulted in a woman motorcycle rider clipping another vehicle while trying to avoid running into the one braking. This resulted in the motorcycle dropping to the ground, causing injuries to the rider who was then airlifted to Kamloops. Fortunately her injuries were not life threatening. Mancini also reported there was a rear-ender

in front of the Barriere Esso Station on Highway 5. This occurred when a vehicle attempted to turn into the station and was struck by another from behind. “There was fresh rain and the roads were slick and a driver not paying attention,” said the officer, “Fortunately there were no injuries, but there was significant damage to the vehicle for a minor fender bender. “We want to remind motorists, especially those passing through town, to be cognizant of people turning. There are lots of vehicles around at this time of year – slow down until you clear the community.” Mancini also noted that due to a few reported sightings of a cougar seen in town last week area residents should remain aware, especially with small children and pets.

tains above Falkland, is 75 per cent contained. The B.C. Wildfire Branch said increased manpower and the weather helped the cause. “Definitely a combination of both,” spokeswoman Kelsey Winter said. “We ramped up on all the fires. At the same time, there was a significant downturn in the weather.” All evacuation alerts and orders have been rescinded. Winter said high humidity also helps keep fuels from dry-

ing out. Parts of the fire centre, including near Vernon and Salmon Arm, saw significant rainfall, as much as 38 millimetres. The result is the fire risk has dropped substantially across the region. However, the campfire ban remains. Meanwhile, sunshine and high temperatures are returning, with Tuesday’s high of 27 to be followed by non-stop sunshine and highs into the mid-30s as the B.C. Day long weekend approaches.
