QB’s Gaschler fourth at provincials 20-year-old local excels at B.C. Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s Vancouver event T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

Local bodybuilder Broedy Gaschler recently earned fourth in his age category at the B.C. Amateur Bodybuilding Association (BCABBA) Provincials in Vancouver. Gaschler, a 20-year-old who graduated from Kwalikum Secondary and earned his diploma in sports psychology at VIU, earned a spot at the Canadian Championships but might choose to take a pass on it this year as he looks to build himself up for next year. “It felt great coming in fourth,” Gaschler said. “But instead of going to nationals, I’m going to take a year to get a little bigger and prepare myself a little more for it all.” “It was a pretty good experience and that’s what it was all about, getting that big experience. So now I’m going to focus on having my physique looking a little better and work on that.” Gaschler works full-time at Jim’s Gym in Parksville, where he’s been for the last two years. He said the gym suits him very well and he said his future

dreams involve a gym of his own one-day. “It’s great there, I love it,” Gaschler said. “It’s a great environment and the staff are awesome. There’s lots of good members there too so it makes things a lot easier to mix in the bodybuilding aspect of things.” Bodybuilding started out as a natural extension from when Gaschler started working out as a 14-year-old. Training for hockey, where he played for the Oceanside Minor Hockey Generals’ rep team, as well as being an affiliated player with the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals and attending training camps with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Penticton Vees, Kelowna Chiefs and Armstrong Knights as a goaltender. Gaschler would eventually give up playing hockey to focus more on bodybuilding. “Yeah, it was a tough decision,” Gaschler said. “I was really into hockey and really loved working out too and it was nice because it went hand in hand. There were a few other things that really led me towards the bodybuilding

side of things and I’m happy I went this way.” At provincials, Gaschler was approached by a couple of supplement companies for potential sponsorship deals, something he’s very proud of and hopes to see become a reality. “Yeah that was cool,” Gaschler said. “I’ve been speaking with both Bio-X nutrition and Allmax nutrition at the provincials.” “I’m pretty happy that happened and hopefully I’ll end up getting a sponsorship deal out of it all. It’s nice when you’ve got people behind you, supporting you and you can see all the hard work paying off.” For now, Gaschler will get himself ready for next year with the ultimate goal of turning pro in his sights. “That’s the goal,” Gaschler said. “Turning pro would be great, I’d like to take this as far as I possibly can. Being able to get paid to do what I love to do, that would be the ultimate. I just love this environment, being involved in weight lifting and body building so as long as I’m around that, I’m happy.”

Royals remain upbeat despite close losses T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

After a busy week, the Quality Foods Parksville Royals are back in action again this week with three Island games on their schedule. The Royals were in action last night (score not available at press time) at home against the Nanaimo Pirates, who they lost to by a score of 15-2 the last time the two teams squared off. This weekend the Royals are in Victoria for a double-header

against the Victoria Mariners, who sit three games ahead of the Royals in the B.C. Premier Baseball League standings. “It’ll be a good test this weekend,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “We played some good games last weekend, we just couldn’t find a way to win in the games that we lost. We did win the one game but we should have won three out of the four games we played. We just didn’t have the timely hitting that we needed in order to get the runs

across the plate, so hopefully we’ll see a little bit more of that this weekend.” Through the month of June, the Royals have been on the road quite a bit and will remain away from Inouye-Wallace Field until the first weekend in July. It’s a challenge that all teams have to face but Wallace knows the players get better at it with time. “It’s a challenge for sure,” Wallace said. “But we’re not the only team that has to deal with that

challenge. All of the Island teams travel to the mainland and same with the mainland teams coming here. Even Okanagan and their travel schedule, they have to come all the way down from the Interior for games too, so we all go through it. It’s just a matter of how you handle it as a team.” “The older players on our team, they’ve been through it and they know what it takes, especially on a weekend when you’re playing up to four games. The younger guys aren’t as used

to it but as the season rolls on, they start getting more and more used to it all.” Getting used to the travel is one thing, but it’s being able to get out on the field and perform that’s the ultimate end goal. For the Royals, it’s been a season full of close games that could have turned into wins.” “Wallace sees the team getting better and the fact that they remain upbeat, despite the close losses, is a positive sign.
