Milijana Bokan

It is with great sadness but with wonderful memories we announce the passing of Milijana Bokan on April 22, 2015 at Hardy View Lodge in the presence of family and friends. She was born December 17, 1950 in Bijelo Polje, Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia). At this time Milijana’s family would like to express gratitude and thanks to doctors and staff at Hardy View Lodge, Boundary Hospital and to all Milijana’s friends. She will always be in our hearts, she may be gone, but she will never be forgotten. We love and miss you so much, her husband George, son Lazar, son Marko with family, the Davies family and the Gleboff family. A celebration of life will be announced in paper.

Dora Salkeld May 5, 1926 – May 7, 2015

Dora is finally at peace in heaven after her two year battle with cancer. Dora was a devoted wife, a caring mother, a loving grandmother and stubborn to the very end. Predeceased by husband Leonard, sister’s Aletha and Myrtle. She is survived by her brother Mervin Norris and her six children Elaine McEntee (Kevin), Audrey Gibson (Jim), Rae Salkeld, Mark Salkeld (Mary), Jeffery Salkeld (Tami) and Laird Salkeld (Valerie) 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. “I have the very best family in the whole world”. Saskatoon City Hospital Alumni, class of ‘47 RN. Obstetrics post grad in Jersey City, N.J. 1949. Married 1950 in Kerrobert S.K., onto Southern Alberta then Burnaby, B.C. in 1955. Dora and Leonard moved to Grand Forks in 1976. Len was retired and Dora went back to nursing. Dora left her mark on everyone she met and will be dearly missed by many. Dora was devoted to giving so in lieu of flowers please give to your preferred charity in memory of her. A service followed; Dora’s burial at Evergreen Cemetery, at Gospel Chapel, Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m. Funeral arrangements been entrusted to the Baker family of Grand Forks Funeral Home, gffh@shaw.ca

Eilleen Popoff November 11, 1928 – March 27, 2015 Eilleen Popoff passed away in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, March 27, 2015 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Fred M. Popoff in 1997 and is survived by three sons Allan, John and Gary; four granddaughters; three grandsons and a great granddaughter. Eilleen was born and lived most of her life in Grand Forks, B.C. before moving to Calgary in 2004 to be closer to her youngest son Gary and his family. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed a wide range of crafts, including weaving, quilting, crocheting and knitting, and passed on a lifetime of experience to her grandchildren, as they were her greatest joy. Her move to Calgary introduced her to a new group of friends, neighbours and activities. She was particularly active in the Hospital Auxiliary at the Foothills Medical Centre, her TOPS group, and also maintained a successful mini vegetable garden in the condominium’s greenhouse at Varsity Towers. Baba, as she was affectionately known by friends and family, was always a warm, considerate and caring mother, grandmother and friend and will be warmly remembered and greatly missed by all. A celebration of her life will be held at the Varsity Towers Social Room (4555 Varsity Lane NW, Calgary, Alberta), on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. with a luncheon to follow. Trail parish hosts CWL convention ANNE MARIEN

The 79th annual convention of the Nelson Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada was held April 30 to May 3 at the Holy Trinity Parish in Trail, B.C. Sacred Heart President Jan Schostak, Mickey Perkins and Anne Marien attended. Diocesan Spiritual Advisor Fr. Rex Velmonte brought greetings. “For the next year our theme is ‘One Heart, One Voice, One Mission,’ an exciting and challenging theme ... because being of one heart, one voice and one mission with God is at the core of Christianty and as members of the Catholic Women’s League”. Stajduhar, convention chairperson, welcomed the members to Holy Trinity Parish. There were also greetings from various dignitaries. A meet-and-greet at the parish hall the first evening was hosted by the Knights of Columbus. On Friday, May 1, registration and a meeting was held at St. Michael’s School. Diocesan President Janet O’Flynn introduced the head table. “My prayers and good wishes to you all as we come to learn, share and enjoy our time here in Trail for our 79th annual diocesan convention.” A workshop was given by provincial president Pat Deppiesse with the theme “CWL Facelift.” She encouraged ladies to bring in new ideas to encourage new members to attend our monthly meetings. She thanked the members for all the work they are doing in the league at the local level. Tanka Wasilenkoff

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Tanka Wasilenkoff in Victoria B.C. at the age of 92. She was a life long member of the USCC. She loved her community and devoted her life to serving and spreading her faith. The last 2 years were spent in Victoria where she lived with her family until her moving to the Sunset Lodge last July. Her death was as her life peaceful and serene. Funeral services were held at the Shoreacres Hall on May 13, 2015. In Lieu of flowers her wish was for donations to go to the USCC.

Margaret Jean Snuggs January 5, 1922 – May 6, 2015 The family of Margaret Jean Snuggs wish to announce her passing on May 6, 2015. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. Jean is survived by her husband Arthur Snuggs, her children; Sharon Lacey, Kelly Waage, John (Kathleen) Snuggs and Elaine (Rick) Thompson and her daughterin-law Louise Snuggs (Bill). She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her son James, her son-in-law Gary, her sisters Dorothy and Eleanor and her brothers; Fred, Charles, Arthur and George. Mom grew up in Manitoba and came west to BC and married our dad in 1944. They lived in Rossland, retired to Christina Lake and Grand Forks. The last few years they resided at Mountain Side Village in Fruitvale. We will all miss her smiling face and twinkling blue eyes. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church in Rossland with Reverend Michael Hare officiating. The biggest challenge facing the councils is convincing members to be chairpersons, and having interest in what is going on in our world and getting involved. Jackie Drysdale gave a presentation on the Catholic Church in local history. The film was presented on the Rossland Church, from the first church built in 1895 to the present church. Closing mass was celebrated by Most Reverent Bishop John Corriveau, and was followed by a banquet. The guest speaker was Fr. Jim Ratcliff.

Arild Stoltenberg Engen It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Arild Stoltenberg Engen on April 28, 2015 at Grand Forks Boundary Hospital. Arild was born to Ulrik and Anna Engen in Skien, Norway on June 15, 1943. When Arild was just a young boy the family moved to Canada and settled in the lower mainland. He later moved to the Okanagan but then made his final home at Christina Lake. Arild is predeceased by both of his parents. He is survived by his sister Eva Moore, brother Baron Engen, daughter Kelly (Bryan) Fitzpatrick, son Dean Engen, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Arild was a colourful character that worked and played hard. Always full of energy and vitality he was a big hearted guy that was always willing to offer a helping hand. He was a car guy and a wheeler dealer. He also loved to entertain family and friends and could often be found in the kitchen cooking up a storm! When not at home you could find Arild enjoying a game of pool with a friend, having some good laughs at the Legion Meat Draw, or anywhere there was Karaoke. He was known to some as Mr. Elvis and loved to get up to perform his favourite songs. His words of wisdom would often be “If you aren’t having any fun, it’s your own darn fault!” A celebration of life for family and friends to be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Grand Forks Legion at 1:00 p.m.

The B..C Community Social Services Awards of Excellence are designed to celebrate B.C.’s publicly funded community social services sector and recognize the sector’s most important asset, its employees who provide vital services to the most vulnerable people in our communities. Awards will be presented in four categories: Rising Star, Hero, Leader and Legend. The winners will be recognized and celebrated at the awards luncheon as part of CSSEA’s 2015 annual general meeting on Oct. 5 in Vancouver.
