Otter Co-op’s Board of Directors attended the 87th Annual Meeting of Federated Co-operatives on February 28 to March 2 in cold, chilly and sunny Saskatoon along with representatives from 212 Co-ops in Western Canada. There were many speakers from different members of the FCL Leadership Team. Many spoke of how Co-ops are evolving and continuing to grow with clear responses to change. Retail viability, profitability, market growth and talent development are priorities that will set the standard in Co-op consumer excellence. On Sunday evening FCL held a dinner for the delegates and had a presentation of the “VOYAGER” the Six String Nation guitar that is built entirely of pieces of Canadian history; the idea of Jowi Taylor, a radio host and producer. Pierre Trudeau’s canoe paddle is the tone bar, Paul Henderson’s hockey stick is part of the pick guard, and the sacred golden spruce of Haida Gwaii forms the face. A tiny piece

The last year saw a return of $451 million to member owners (of which Otter Co-op is one); a healthy patronage payment that retails can use to re-invest in the community in which they serve. The additional earnings FCL has over and above the $451 million that were allocated back to members were kept in FCL reserves and retained savings capital to facilitate the short and long term future goals of FCL. FCL has advanced to an organization that continues its strategic priorities that have a local presence, focusing on local roots and local impact. 2014 saw significant work done in the area of corporate performance, talent management, and information technology.
