In Memory Of
EVELYN ALMA KURBIS (nee Bitner)
Dustin Leonard Charles Wheeler
Born September 2, 1925, Biggar, Sask. Died December 28, 2014, Vernon, BC
May 8, 1986 ~ January 4, 2013
Evelyn leŌ us peacefully for her eternal Home almost 19 years to the day that her beloved husband, Bill, had gone before her. AŌer early childhood years on their farm near Biggar, Sask., her family moved to the Vernon area in 1936 due to the hardships of The Depression. As the eldest child at 11 years old, she was already working many hours shoulder to shoulder with her own mother and siblings both for themselves and for others to help their father reestablish a viable farming life in the Coldstream and the By. Following her schooling in Vernon and Armstrong, she met and on April 7, 1947, married Bill Kurbis, a returning WW II vet and new employee at the Vernon Post Oĸce. They made their home in Vernon where Mom conƟnued to toil Ɵrelessly in various jobs to add needed income for their young family as well as carrying out all the domesƟc chores necessary to raise four children. Just as it had been with her own upbringing, Ɵmes were hardworking but always made for a happy, harmonious home. Before and then aŌer their kids grew up and leŌ home, Mom was volunteering whatever spare Ɵme she had leŌ towards many good and charitable causes including Įrst and foremost within their church congregaƟons where she oŌen played various key roles. Although their eventual Ɵme of “reƟrement” together was cut shorter than hoped, the few such years that Mom and Dad were able to Įnally spend with some leisure were full and happy ones that also entailed some memorable travel and new experiences. Doubtless though was their favourite pasƟme of caring for and doƟng upon their numerous grandchildren. The last several years of Evelyn’s life were spent conƟnuing to unselĮshly support not only family but also people with all kinds of needs from both near and far relaƟonally and geographically. Throughout her Ɵme on this earth, Mom very seldom complained but rather emphasized graƟtude for whatever it was that one may have had and to share. Such lessons were more oŌen than not taught through her own living example. To the very end, she was considerate, compassionate, and most loving. Her parents, Emil and Olga Bitner, her brother, Ed Bitner, and her husband, Wilfred (“Bill”) Kurbis, predeceased Evelyn. She is survived by her brother, Elmer (Vina) Bitner, and her sisters, Wilma Davis and Sharon (William) Zatkovich. Her legacy lives on through her own immediate family: Son, Ken Kurbis (Nancy); grandson, Andrew (Kari), great-grandson, Thomas; and grandson, David; Son, Rod Kurbis (Agnes); grandson, Philip (Manu), great-granddaughters Emma and Lia; grandson, Ryan (Sasha), great-grandson, Oliver, and great-granddaughter, Annika; Daughter, Sarah (Paul) Stack; grandson, Luke (Chantal) Stack and granddaughter, Danielle (Troy) Corbin; and, Son, Bob (Melissa); granddaughter, Nicole (Craig) AbboƩ, great-grandsons, Robert and Sam and greatgranddaughter, Bryn; grandson, Ben (Staci); and granddaughter, Meghan (Nick). ͞ ĞĂƌ ĨƌŝĞŶĚƐ͕ ůĞƚ ƵƐ ƉƌĂĐƟĐĞ ůŽǀŝŶŐ ĞĂĐŚ ŽƚŚĞƌ͕ ĨŽƌ ůŽǀĞ ĐŽŵĞƐ ĨƌŽŵ 'ŽĚ ĂŶĚ ƚŚŽƐĞ ǁŚŽ ĂƌĞ ůŽǀŝŶŐ ĂŶĚ ŬŝŶĚ ƐŚŽǁ ƚŚĂƚ ƚŚĞLJ ĂƌĞ ƚŚĞ ĐŚŝůĚƌĞŶ ŽĨ 'ŽĚ͕ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĂƚ ƚŚĞLJ ĂƌĞ ŐĞƫŶŐ ƚŽ ŬŶŽǁ Śŝŵ ďĞƩĞƌ͘͟ ϭ :ŽŚŶ ϰ͗ϳ
No words I write could ever say How sad and empty I feel today A thousand words won’t bring you back I know because I’ve tried Neither will a thousand tears A million times I’ve cried You never said I’m leaving You never said good-bye You were gone before I knew it And only God knows why If love alone could have saved you You never would have died You were my gift for such a little while Your loss just seems so wrong You should not have left before me It’s with me that you belong Just one little peak into Heaven Is all that I’m asking today I just want to know how you’re doing But Heaven is so far away.
