Vernon hosts 4-H delegates Morning Star Staff

Learning, laughs and networking were the focus as 4-H leaders from across British Columbia converged on Vernon last weekend. The group gathered at the Prestige Hotel for B.C. 4-H’s biennial Leaders’ and Key Leaders’ Conference. All seven 4-H regions were represented by 77 leaders, including delegates from Alberta, Ontario and the Yukon. The three-day conference focused on leadership training and building our 4-H youth in to the leaders of Sonja Gaudet tomorrow. Delegates took in a fun night at the O’Keefe Ranch Saturday, complete with an old fashioned scavenger hunt around the ranch and dinner at the Cattlemen’s Club Restaurant with entertainment from talented country crooners, Rob Dinwoodie and the Open Range who entertained everyone with their cowboy ways. The keynote speaker Sunday morning was Sonja Gaudet, Canadian Paralympic curler and threetime Paralympic gold medalist. Gaudet gave a very inspiring speech on applying the fours H’s, head, heart, health and hands to overcoming obstacles and achieving dreams. “I would like to say again how fantastic the conference was this past weekend. I feel newly re-energized and I am looking forward to getting involved in 4-H in the Kamloops area now that I have met some of the district leaders,” said Erin Palmer 4-H leader who recently relocated to Kamloops from Vancouver Island. The Leaders’ and Key Leaders’ Conference focuses on training and education for the 4-H leaders to take back to their clubs and 4-H members. There are currently 635 volunteer leaders in the province working with nearly 2,300 youth in 141 rural and urban 4-H clubs. B.C. 4-H is celebrating 100 years this year. While 4-H has changed and evolved a great deal since its beginnings in 1914, the impact of the program on our young people is as relevant today as it was a century ago. 4-H continues to teach young people to successfully meet the challenges, not only of their own futures, but also the future of their communities.
