School year finally underway in the Lower Similkameen No extension to school year planned as Similkameen students return to classes for the 2014-15 season By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com School began for students in the Lower Similkameen on Monday, September 22 with a half day of classes at both Cawston Primary and Similkameen Elementary Secondary School. Regular full day classes began on Tuesday as the school year returns to normal after losing the first three weeks of regular school to the provincial teachers strike, which was settled last week. Teachers, students and parents all expressed relief the strike was over Monday, as they arrived with their children at Cawston Primary. Kindergarten classes will be doing the usual gradual entry as they are introduced to school, their teachers

and their classmates. The Kindergarten class begins full attendance every day starting Friday, September 26. Cawston Primary school welcomed teachers Mrs. Petry (Kindergarten & Grade 1) and Ms Kruger (Kindergarten) back to the school. Mrs. Walters was also welcomed to Cawston. She will be teaching Grade two and three. “We are happy to be back and are glad to see all our ‘Sunflowers’ again,”said Prinicipal Linda Thiel. At Similkameen Elementary Secondary School, similar sentiments were being felt as the school began a new year. At SESS, a number of staffing changes have taken place, with Cameron Adam welcomed to the school to teach science and math. Other newcomers include Lukas Toth (Tech ed) Mathew Falk (band) and Mike Reid, who will be Aboriginal Support instructor. The province has decreed there will be no extension to the school year for the three weeks lost to strike. Both Cawston and SESS have adjusted their school years accordingly.

This year’s Similkameen Elementary Secondary School grad class are chasing a goal, and the fact that school start has been delayed isn’t slowing them down a bit. They started their fund raising efforts on Labour Day with a car wash at Fas Gas in Keremeos, raising $660. The group followed that with a movie night on Friday, September 19 at Victory Hall. Next week the grads will host a dance at Victory Hall for students in grades 8- 12. The event takes place from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. and will feature a disc jockey - DJ Photo by Steve Arstad Rick - from Kelowna.
