volunteer work, public relations and fundraising on Saturday, July 26. Volunteers spent the Harrison Dragon Boat Regatta, providing a safety boat on the lake and running a fundraiser raffle and silent action. The SAR volunteers contributed over 100 combined hours to the event which raised over $2,200. Marv Anderson, president of the KHSAR said “many thanks to the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club for the invitation, as well as their contribution of $900, which consisted of a silent auction for a team entry for next year’s regatta.” Kent Harrison SAR would also

Grant money helps sponsor seniors fair Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
The District of Kent is among eight B.C. communities that is receiving a $1,000 grant to help create a legacy project or celebration. The awards are being given from the Ministry of Health under the Age-friendly program that many communities in B.C. have been accessing. Kerry Hilts, director of Community Services for the District of Kent, said they will be using their grant money to sponsor the seniors fair that is coming up next month. The fair is going to be held at Cheam Village on Sept. 18, and will focus on providing information and helpful resources to seniors on their health and well-being.

This Week’s Special: July 31 to August 6
After an unusually busy winter and a quiet spring, July has been a busy month for Kent Harrison Search and Rescue volunteers. So far this month the team has responded to 10 incidents ranging from assisting with firefighting operations on the north side of Mt Woodside (forest fire), to a large-scale search on Mt. Washington (Vancouver Island), to six calls on Harrison Lake. This Monday night saw SAR volunteers transporting paramedics to Long Island Bay to evacuate an elderly male with severe health problems. But it was time for some

“There were only eight communities given the grants and we were one of them,” Hilts said, adding that it’s a continuation of the work they’ve been doing over the past few years. The other communities to receive the grants are Anmore, Cobble Hill, Granisle, Kitimat, Telkwa, Vancouver and Vanderhoof. To achieve Age-friendly BC Recognition, communities must complete four steps. These include establishing an advisory committee, passing a local government resolution, conducting an agefriendly assessment and developing and publishing an action plan. The participation of local seniors also is required and is an integral part of this process. Twenty five communities in B.C. have been recognized as age-friendly.
