BRIEFS Violinist who fuses several genres in city on Thursday Jaron Freeman-Fox redefines what the violin can do with a fiddling fusion of bluegrass, Celtic, jazz and Indian music. Toronto-based Freeman-Fox, winner of two 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards, will perform at a house concert in Red Deer on Thursday, July 24. The “violinovator” has been described as “Tom Waits playing the fiddle, backed up by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.” Freeman-Fox’s music was recorded on an acclaimed album called Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything, a merger of Indian ragas, klezmer punk, ethereal folk and Latin-fused funk. Doors for the local concert open at 6 p.m. and the show is at 7:30. Tickets are $30 and include a full Tex-Mex supper (bring your own bottle). For more information, call Terry at 403-302-0782 or email irishmouse@email.com.

Matt Blais to rock Red Deer Calgary’s passionate blues-rocker Matt Blais will perform next week in Red Deer. Blais, who’s known for blending fiery elements of rock ‘n’ roll with a smooth vintage blues sound, will play on Saturday, July 26, at Wild Bill’s Sports Bar in the Quality Inn, North Hill. The musician who’s been compared to Sam Roberts, Matt Mays and Joel Plaskett, is touring Alberta and B.C. this summer in support of his latest album, The Heartbeat. Cover charge for the 9 p.m. show is $10. For more information, call 403-343-8800.

Underside Pattern coming to the patio Upbeat pop group Underside Pattern performs this week on Red Deer’s Ross Street Patio. The fun and youthful indie band from Red Deer will entertain lunch-hour crowds from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, July 22 and 24. Underside Pattern is made up of five members: vocalist Shaeane Jimenez, Corey Gomez on bass, Craig Gomez on guitar and keyboards, Johah Falk on guitar and Steven Wheeler on drums. The band writes its own material, such as the sunny and melodic tune Brian Teaches Jonah, and also performs cover songs from favourite artists. Underside Pattern has played around Central Alberta at various fundraisers, Earth Dance at The Hub, the Festival of Trees, the Westerner Days Parade, and Centrefest, among other events. Another local group, the hip-hop duo Donatello, will entertain during the same noon-hour slot on the Patio on July 29 and 31.

New album for Lady Antebellum BY ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHVILLE — The title for Lady Antebellum’s forthcoming new album, 747, refers to a hook in the title song about how a commercial jetliner can’t go fast enough for a man trying to reclaim his love. It’s also a fitting analogy for the country trio’s own super-sonic momentum over the last year. Their last album was released just 14 months ago, a couple months before singer Hillary Scott gave birth to her daughter, Eisele. A deluxe version of the album came out November, and then they started writing new music while out on tour. Now, it just gets more complex as 747 is due out Sept. 30 — about the same time singer-guitarist Dave Haywood is expecting his first child. “We are just so excited for the opportunity to just continue to build our career,” Scott said as she was heading into the studio to put the finishing touches on the record with Haywood and singer Charles Kelley. “And then also in our personal lives ... our families are growing. That’s the energy level we are in.”

In this June 19, 2009, file photo, Johnny Winter plays during the Canton Blues Festival in Canton, Ohio. The Texas blues icon, who rose to fame in the late 1960s and ’70s with his energetic performances and recordings, died in Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday. He was 70.

Blues legend dead at 70 BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS GENEVA — Texas blues legend Johnny Winter emblazoned himself into the world’s consciousness with his tattooed arms churning out lightning-fast guitar riffs and his striking long white hair flowing from under his cowboy hat. His contrasting appearance and devotion to the blues pioneers of the 20th century turbo-charged a career in which he emulated and, ultimately, championed, his childhood hero Muddy Waters and other icons. Winters carved out a wide niche — and became an icon himself — starting in the late 1960s and 1970s with a sound that blues and country singer Tracy Nelson, prominent during the same era with her band Mother Earth, described as “Texas second generation.” “He did not overplay, like a lot of white blues guitarists,” she said of Winter, who collaborated with the likes of Waters, John Lee Hooker and Jimi Hendrix. “His tone was a little more modern, more electric, but I could see the influences. He stayed faithful. People idolized him.” Winter’s representative, Carla Parisi, confirmed on Thursday that he died in a hotel room just outside Zurich a day earlier at age 70. The statement said his wife, family and bandmates were all saddened by the loss of one of the world’s finest guitarists. The cause of death was unclear and authorities have ordered an autopsy, said Zurich police spokeswoman Cornelia Schuoler. She said investigators are mainly looking at “medical causes” and there is no indication that anyone else was involved. Winter was a leading light among the white blues guitar players, including Eric Clapton and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, who followed in the footsteps of the earlier Chicago blues

masters. He idolized Waters — and got a chance to produce some of the blues legend’s more popular albums. Rolling Stone magazine named Winter one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Music writer Fred Schruers said Winter played a major role in introducing the blues to a new audience. “The real legacy of Johnny Winter is that he brought the blues to an audience in tiedye that might otherwise have neglected the entire genre — and his timely work producing Muddy Waters only deepened that contribution,” said Schruers, author of an upcoming biography of Billy Joel. Winter had been on an extensive tour this year to celebrate his 70th birthday. His last performance was on Saturday, July 12, in Wiesen, Austria. He had recently announced that he would follow up his 2011 album Roots with a new studio album, Step Back, in September featuring collaborators such as Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, Joe Perry, Dr. John and Joe Bonnamassa. John Dawson Winter III was born on Feb. 23, 1944, and raised in Beaumont, Texas. He was the older brother of Edgar Winter, who like him was an albino, and rose to musical fame with the Ed-

gar Winter Group. “Made my first record when I was 15, started playing clubs when I was 15. Started drinking and smoking when I was 15. Sex when I was 15. Fifteen was a big year for me,” Winter recalled with a laugh in a documentary released this year, Johnny Winter: Down & Dirty. “I love playing guitar. It’s the only thing I’ve ever really been great at,” he said. His career received a big boost early on when Rolling Stone singled him out as one of the best blues guitarists on the Texas scene. This helped secure a substantial recording contract from Columbia Records in 1969 that led to an appearance at the Woodstock Festival and gave him a wide following among college students and young blues fans. He was one of the most popular live acts of the early 1970s, when his signature fast blues guitar solos attracted a wide following. Crowds were dazzled by the speed — and volume — of his guitar playing, which had its roots in urban blues but incorporated elements of rock ’n’ roll. But his addiction problems with heroin during that decade and later battles with alcohol and prescription medication also drew attention.
