TRI-CITY SPOTLIGHT: Happy faces at dentist office, RCH cash TRADES CASH

Five mothers were awarded this month with a “smile makeover” thanks to Coquitlam General & Sedation Dentistry. The Glen Drive business ran its Mother’s Day contest in The Tri-City News and ended up picking five winners for the $15,000 package. More than 40 women were nominated for free dental work by Dr. Shafiq Kara. Ed Westcott, Randy Petrash, Janet Foss and Scott Schiebler. Southern Railway of BC is matching funds saved through injury prevention. Since 2012, they have contributed more than $100,000 to RCHF.
A total of 29 students from School District 43 have won 2014 Secondary School Apprenticeship scholarships. Students in the construction electrician field are Derek Shong, Michael Seaman, Juan Lim, Jeremy Paddon, Tanner Roughead, Michael Couto and Philip Morse. Students in the carpentry program are Mark Gruninger, Thomas Kurtukoff, Erik Murphy, Justin Fox and Joseph Hogge. Michel Kosiancic is the sole baker while Tyler Mclaren is the only sheet metal worker. In the professional cook category are Raymond Chan, Nicholas Zadnikar, Siavosh Moshfeghi, Keifer Baranec, Nicole Moul, Tyler Arden, Arash Aghshahi, Cody Grant, Peter (Yu Tak) Kim, Keagan ArcherHastie, Devon Koerber and Steven Alexander. Meanwhile, Anthony Furlan is planning a career in landscape horticulture, Collin Fairchild as auto service technician and Anthony De Vita in refrigeration and air conditioning repair. The teens were honoured by the board of education at its May 13 meeting, with Doug MacLean (trades and transitions co-ordinator) and Sean Riley (SSA teacher) attending.

Leadership 12 students at Coquitlam’s Gleneagle secondary hosted a school-wide event last week with a focus on wellness. The Fit ‘n Fun after-school program on May 13 included lessons in Zumba, yoga, mountain biking, First Aid, tae kwon do and meditation, said teacher Adam Hayes.
ABOVE: Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, city council and staff were on hand for Telus’ $150,000 donation last week. Part of the money will go to the I Am Someone anti-bullying campaign and charitable programs. The company plans spend $34 million to expand its technology network in the city this year.
