A pair of Mission students placed in the top three in their public speaking categories earlier this month. A total of five local French-speaking students competed in the Canadian Parents for French BC and Yukon’s Concours d’art oratoire, held May 3 at Surrey SFU. The

annual competition attracted more than 10,000 students from across British Columbia, and 285 made the provincial finals. Keegan Heaven, a Grade 7 early immersion student from Christine Morrison Elementary School, earned second place for his speech on Nel-

son Mandela. Leila Rasti, a Grade 6 intensive French student, took third place for her talk titled, “The most important person in my life: me.” Other finalists from Mission were Jenai Konings, Chelsea Langan and Amy Marie Short-Garber. “It’s an incredible

feat to make it to the provincial finals – taking home a medal is a real achievement. We congratulate everyone who participated; they are all winners. Felicitations!” said chief judge Dr. Renee Hamilton-Clark. For more information, visit cpf.bc.ca.

Chantel Funk Design Inc. WE LIVE BETWEEN TWO POLES There is an old Jewish custom (attributed to the 19th century Rabbi, Simcha Bunim) of carrying two slips of paper around, one in each pocket, with a different message on each slip of paper. On the one slip of paper is written, “The entire universe was created just for me.” And, on the other is written, “I am but dust and ashes.” There is surely much wisdom in this. On the one hand, God has made all of us in His image, and loves us deeply and has veritably created the universe for us. On the other hand, we are short-lived creatures who will perish like everything else. Catholics are told on Ash Wednesday to “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season which ends with the joyous celebration of Easter, which essentially celebrates the fact that Jesus has risen. By extension, we as the church, will also rise from the ashes. We do well to always keep in mind that we live between the poles of finitude and eternity.
