Lochside Regional Trail Two trails diverge in Saanich, and you should take the one less travelled. The Lochside Regional Trail begins at the trail junction just north of the pedestrian bridge that spans above the TransCanada Highway. Head west, and you’ll continue along the busier Galloping Goose Regional Trail as far as Sooke. Head east, and Lochside will take you 29 kilometres through picturesque Saanich, Central Saanich, Sidney and North Saanich all the way north to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Roughly 1.1 million users travel along Lochside each year, while the Goose attracts more than 1.8 million users. The Lochside Regional Trail is a former railway line, now popular with walkers, cyclists and horseback riders. Along the way through Saanich, the trail provides glimpses of the varied natural environments the region has to offer – from Garry oak meadows in North Quadra to usable agricultural land along the Blenkinsop Valley. As the trail takes you through residential Cordova Bay, you catch sight of the Pacific Ocean above the rooftops. The trail is mostly flat. While the majority of the route is paved, conditions vary along the trail, with some gravel and dirt pathway, as well as a wooden trestle to cross over Blenkinsop Lake. Surround yourself with the area wildlife – the deer and native birds – who make their home in the woods that border the trail. “Whether you’re commuting to work or meandering on a weekend afternoon, the Lochside is a treasure for residents and visitors alike,” says Laurie Sthamann, communications co-ordinator with the Capital Regional District.
