It was anything but the typical “what I did on my spring vacation” talk in Rock Creek Sunday night as Lisa Siewert and six high school students recently returned from Guatemala presented a report on their trip to the community. They travelled to San Antonio Aguascalientes from March 13-24 to work with Hope for Home, a home for children with disabilities. Lisa said the team spent their spring break learning first-hand what life is like in the third world. The evening opened with Pastor Dave Janke of Kettle River Chapel in Rock Creek welcoming over 50 people who had gathered to hear about the trip. Lisa explained that Guatemala is a very poor country with over half of their children under five being chronically malnourished. “On this trip we mostly worked with children,” she said. “Some of them were either neglected, abused or abandoned— or the parents just simply didn’t have the means to take care of their children. It was a privilege for us to be able to go to schools and orphanages and feeding centres and villages to help where we could.” • See GUATEMALA page 4

Staff and board members of the Heritage Credit Union on the celebration of a decade of service at the West Boundary Branch in Greenwood: (L-R) Donna Durban, Edward Rohn, Dan Wack, Jeniece Uyeyama, Joanne Cotter and Christina Delisle.
Credit Union celebrates decade A special anniversary celebration was held in the West Boundary on Saturday, April 12 as the Heritage Credit Union (HCU) marked the 10th anniversary of the West Boundary branch in Greenwood. The celebration offered members—old and new—cake, coffee and a chance to win a door prize. Two senior directors came from Castlegar to offer their congratulations. Chair of the HCU board Dan Wack, and Edward Rohn, who serves as secretary, both insisted the hard work and dedication of the West Boundary staff and management over the past decade is the main reason for the success of the branch. Joanne Cotter, who served as branch manager for nearly seven years from the time the branch opened,
was at the branch on Saturday as well. Cotter now holds a position at Castlegar branch as Manager, Retail Services. Current manager Donna Durban has been at the helm since December 2010. “It seems like just the other day we started this branch,” Wack remarked. According to their website (heritagecu.ca) HCU was established in 1948 (originally named Castlegar Savings Credit Union). At the time of incorporation assets were $45.00 in share capital and $9 in initiation fees. The average weekly wage in B.C at the time was $42.47. Today HCU has over $148 million in assets with three branches serving the communities of Castlegar, Slocan Valley, and the West Boundary.
