Big bucks for Big Brothers, Sisters $65,000 RAISED AT SUPER SUNDAY AT HERITAGE LANES
Kinnkade Streit with his perfect form is said to be the most sought-after “Little” for next year’s event.
On Super Sunday, March 2, teams of friends and coworkers came together in silly cartoon costumes to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer and District. The event, held at Heritage Lanes in Red Deer, brought in more than $65,000 in support of their community-based and site-based programming. This year, 65 teams collected cash pledges, put together their best cartoon dress and bowl in a strike challenge. Costumed characters ranged from Scooby Doo and his infamous gang, Minnie Mouse with bows galore, to the entire cast of Alice in Wonderland. “Without the support from our sponsors, especially Servus Credit Union, this event just wouldn’t be as successful as it has been for the past 34 years,” said event co-ordinator Meagan Wade. “They are a huge driving force for us during this annual campaign.” Servus Credit Union, the presenting sponsor of the event, raised more than $39,000 through their in-house pledging campaigns and special events in local branches. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer and District runs a number of initiatives, including in-school mentoring, Cops For Kids, traditional match programs as well as match activities for those “bigs” and youth waiting to be matched. Currently more than 40 youth are waiting to be mentored, with two-thirds of those on the wait list being young boys. Big Brothers Big Sisters is Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, facilitating life-changing relationships that empower children and youth to reach their potential both as individuals and citizens.
