Two siblings are off to a running start with a service club they founded at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary. In just the first year, the school’s first Key Club – under incorporation with Kiwanis International – has already organized a food drive, fundraised for B.C. Children’s Hospital, and collected jeans for homeless

youth. During the holiday season, the club had students write motivational messages on cards and hang them up on a Christmas tree. Now, Grade 12 students Sahil and Ekanki Chawla are organizing a major bullying awareness event at the school. “We always talk about how bullying is a big issue in our schools,” said Sahil. “We wanted to make

a difference.” The anti-bullying event will have local community organizations set up info booths. There will be free food, as well as activities to keep young children occupied while parents browse the info tables. “This is an event for the entire family, in hopes of raising awareness of how we can all work together to take a step in preventing bul-

lying from occurring,” said Sahil. “My goal is to showcase the organizations and services available in our community, so that our youth are aware of the various supports available to them.” The bullying awareness event is open to the community. It will be on Feb. 22 at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School (2272 Windsor St.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
