Items compiled from the archived newspapers held at the Cranbrook Museum and Archives 1900 Farewell To Our Boys … Last Saturday was a day long to be remembered in Cranbrook. Forty-two sturdy young men of South East Kootenay, who had offered their services for England and the Union Jack, boarded the east bound train here at noon under command of Captain Parker, and left for the battle fields of South Africa. The Pay In Strathcona’s Horse ... For the benefit of those who are curious to know what pay the volunteers for the Strathcona Horse will receive, it may be said that until the corps arrive in South Africa mounted police pay will prevail, which is as follows: Private 50 cents per diem, corporal 85 cents, sergeant $1, sergeant major $1.50. On arriving in Africa the line cavalry scale will be paid, which is: Private one shilling and two pence, corporal two shillings, sergeants two shillings and eight pence, troop sergeant major three shillings and 10 pence, squadron sergeant major four shillings and four pence. A First Class Dentist … Dr. Barber, of Nelson, has been in town this week practicing dentistry. He has done a great deal of work and is giving good satisfaction. He expects to make regular visits to Cranbrook, Fernie and Fort Steele, and establish a regular line of practice. The Glass Of Fashion … Plaid silk linings appear in some of the wool dress skirts. The back in many a cloth bodice made quite plain, without any seam. The new boas and muffs seem to be chiefly made of tails, so many are used. Round handkerchiefs embroidered with your favourite flower is the latest fad. Wide silk gauze scarves to wear about the neck and to throw over the shoulders with evening dress are shown in great variety in the shops. White
tulle, striped with narrow ribbon velvet, is very effective over white satin for an evening gown, and ruffles at the foot are edged with the velvet ribbon. Very shiny are the black gauze butterflies, spotted with chenille and spangles, which can be purchased in the shops for renovating last year’s evening bonnet. The Fort Steele Band … The Fort Steele band gave a concert last Wednesday evening to assist the organization in raising funds for its new hall. The band has greatly improved, and the people of Fort Steele should be proud of it, and do all in their power to assist it in such efforts as promoting the welfare of the town. The members are always ready to assist in any enterprise in the town, pay or no pay, and are deserving of a liberal support. 1901 A Wild Horse Pioneer … An interesting figure on Cranbrook streets for a couple of days last week was Dave Griffith, one of the sturdy pioneers of the district; one of the very few who came into the country in 1864 and has stayed with it to good purpose. Help The Fire Department … The paper that is being circulated

for funds to pay off the debt of the fire department, is being freely subscribed to. It is necessary to raise something over $100 for this purpose to pay the debt and place the apparatus in a condition to do work. Every householder in the town should give at least $1 for the purpose. The department is a benefit to every property owner in the town. Ice Harvest … The ice harvest is now on and several hundred tons have been shipped from Moyie Lake to this point. Among those who are storing it away are Messrs McInness, Ryan, Clapp, King, Brault, Leitch and Wellman. 1902 We Were Dead Easy … The Fernie boys did as they pleased with us, they walked through our players and when they wanted a goal they just rushed in and took it. There was a hockey game at the rink Saturday night. That is, it was advertised as a game, and the crowd was there expecting to see a game. But they didn’t. The sides were formed, and when Referee Donahue blew the whistle the puck started. It was a strange and peculiar puck. It liked McDermot, the Cranbrook goalkeeper, and kept near him most of the time. So near him, in fact, that “Mac” was

doing the hot step right. There were moments when it came so rapidly and often that he thought he was playing up against a symposium of pucks. Once in a while the erratic little rubber devil would take a turn down the ice by way of diversion, helped along by a good strike by one of the Cranbrook boys. But it was not for long, and back it would go, and then followed a general scrimmage. Twice a man on the Fernie side was knocked out, but that made no difference. They played like professionals and never seemed to tire. Our boys did well, considering. At the close of the first half Cranbrook had gotten but one goal, and when time was called at the end of the game the score stood 9 to 3 in favour of Fernie. The Odd Fellows Ball A Grand Social Success … Nearly 200 people participate in a glorious evening characterized by good humour and a good time. The largest and most enjoyable dance ever held in Cranbrook was that given by the members of Key City Lodge,
I.O.O.F., last Monday evening. A few minutes after 9 o’clock, the music started for the grand march, and the floor was filled with a fine looking crowd of dancers. As one gentleman present remarked, “Never before in the history of Cranbrook has there been seen such a number of magnificently dressed women and fine appearing men”. Dance followed dance, from the good-natured quadrille to the mazy waltz, until the hour of midnight. The music furnished by Messrs. Rookes and Highwarden was excellent, and every feature of the ball was above criticism. It is truly said that the Odd Fellows of Cranbrook have won an enviable reputation as entertainers, and every announcement along that line by them is a prophecy of a grand good time. It Escaped … R.O. Jennings and Gust Thies have been placer mining on Perry Creek the past few months. Their camp is about six miles above Old Town, and they have been living alone in their cabin.
One day last week they heard their dog crying in agony and alarm. Mr. Jennings rushed out to the brush and found the animal in the embrace of an immense mountain lion. Jennings called to Thies to bring the axe, and in the meantime, having nothing else to use, he threw his mitts at the animal. Without letting go of his victim the lion spit like a tomcat at this mode of attack, and finally let the dog go and slunk slowly into the woods. Thies hurried out with a .22 rifle they had in camp to shoot at mountain rats. Not thinking of the ferocity of the lion or the danger he incurred, Thies chased after him and succeeded in hitting him once in the flank. The bullet had no effect except to cause the lion to turn and spit at him. Suddenly it dawned upon Thies that he was chasing a half starved lion alone into the bush with nothing but a plaything of a rifle for protection. Thinking then that discretion was the better part of valour, he relinquished the chase and sought in hurried flight the safety of com-
panionship at the camp. “I hated to lose the fellow,” said Mr. Thies, “as it was the largest one I ever saw. But, I could do nothing with small rifle, and so had to let him go.” Narrow Escape … Richard Stewart, who was hurt by a premature explosion of dynamite last week while digging a grave, is able to be out again. Moyie Lake Ice Harvest … The ice harvest on Moyie Lake has commenced. Messrs Hawke & Brenton and Joseph Niederstadt have formed a partnership. They have contracts for one thousand tons of ice. Some of this of course will be shipped to outside points, a good portion of it going to Cranbrook and Marysville. The same parties still have the 50,000 ton contract from the C.P.R. in view and the chances are favourable for them getting it. Only married men who are residents of the town will be given employment and 30 cents an hour will be the wages paid. They are getting 70 cents a ton for their ice loaded on the cars here.
