1906 The total mineral production of the province was given as $25,357,535 out of this, The Osoyoos, Grand Forks and Greenwood mining divisions contributed $6,994,925. 1914 A carload of seven Ford automobiles was unloaded at Grand Forks for the Grand Forks Garage Co., being the first of a series of carload shipments of these popular cars which the Garage Co. received that year. 1919 The medical health officer’s report for 1918 was accepted at the regular meeting of city council. There were nine cases of Typhoid discovered and cured; five cases of Scarlet Fever discovered and cured, and six cases of Tuberculosis, five of which were cured in the Boundary last year. 1924 Hugh McCotcheon, who has been a collector of customs in Greenwood for 24 years, died at his home in that city last Sunday after an illness of six weeks. He was 73 years of age. 1929 North Fork’s long-hoped-for rural mail delivery was established on Jan. 16. 1934 The Finance Committee reported to a surprised city council a surplus of about $7,000. Council said this was very gratifying particularly in view of the reduced revenue and increased burdens entailed in the year’s operations. 1939 The rebuilding of the Great Northern Railway track back into Grand Forks is a probable development for the summer of 1939 according to officials in St. Paul. 1944 The last of the five Manly brothers,

pioneers of the Grand Forks district, Joesph L. Manly, passed away at Grand Forks Hospital on Jan. 11. His one ambition in recent weeks was to reach the age of 90 and he did on Jan. 10. 1949 City council set the price of $3.50 for each thawing of frozen water pipes, this being the amount paid by the council to Boundary Electric, the city supplying a helper and the necessary electricity fee. 1954 Mrs. A. Roberts, former Midway oldtimer, passed away at the age of 70. 1964 A Lillooet man, Brian Hewitt, became the new manager of the Shell Service station on Central Avenue, west. 1969 The Department of Commercial Transportation granted the PhoenixAlpine Ski Club permission to operate their Dippelnoyer T-bar tow at the Phoenix Resort Area. The hill will be open until April. 1974 The team of Colleen Engstrom, Sandy Marshall, Norah Ferguson, and Kathy Acres will be traveling to Trail to compete in the West Kootenay zone semifinals in curling. 1979 An arbitration board has awarded members of Grand Forks Teachers’ Association a 7.6 per cent raise for 1979. 1984

Pet of the Week

The Boundary New Year’s baby, Dennis James Friesen, was born Jan. 3 at Boundary Hospital, a son for Barbara and Dan Friesen of Grand Forks. 1989 Grand Forks’ New Years’ baby is Ashley Marie Derhousoff, born Jan. 6. 1994 According to information released by the B.C. Assessment Authority, single family residential properties in Grand Forks experienced the highest range of increase in approximate property value based on assessment in the province from July 1, 1992 to July 1, 1993. 1999 Paramedical staff in the Boundary and throughout B.C. began their first stage in job action as they started rotating job walkouts this week. Union representatives want to bridge the gap in wages and benefits between paramedical staff working in community-based agencies and hospitals. 2004 A truck driver suffered various injuries and was treated for exposure to the cold after a single vehicle accident on Hwy 3 near Norwegian Creek. Midway RCMP said the semi truck with a loaded trailer exited the road and dropped about 35 feet into the creek. The cab of the truck landed on its side and diesel fuel spilled into the creek. 2009 “When will it end?” was a question heard everywhere in the BoundaryKootenay last week as snow continued to fall land was topped by freezing rain. Every highway into the interior was cut off by avalanches, mudslides, or both at one time or another, isolating cities and preventing shipments of food, gasoline and other supplies from getting through.

XXXXX Sapphire

XXXXXmy name is Sapphire, I am a Calico cat. I am very beautiful and can be Hello often crazy during the night jumping off walls. I have a very good home with lots of fun places to play. I have two brother dogs and a brother cat whom I love very much. My human parents are very generous and loving towards me, I am free to roam wherever I please. One of my favourite places to lay down is under the couch in which I have made a cubby hole so I can hide in. I hope you all have fun and enjoy looking at my pretty picture.
