Q&A

Kristina Plewes,

M.Sc., Aud. Registered Audiologist

Ear Wax is Good!

Everyone has some amount of wax in their ears. However, our society generally views wax as unpleasant. Cerumen (the medical term for earwax) is produced close to the outside of the ear canal by the cerumenous and sebaceous glands. Research has shown that ear wax is an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal agent for the ear canal designed to protect it from foreign objects and debris. Ear wax has a noxious smell and taste which deters small insects from making a home in the ear canal. Many people attempt to remove wax on their own using Q-tips, keys, bobby pins, suction devices advertised on TV, ear candling and many more interesting ways that DO NOT HELP and can cause injury to the ear canal and/or eardrum. A build up of ear wax can block sound from entering your ears so if you have concerns about your hearing or fullness in your ear please see an audiologist or family physician. A build up of wax in ear canals can create problems for clients that wear hearing aids by causing annoying feedback or whistling. If this happens please visit an audiologist that is trained and certified in cerumen management. Ear wax has a definite function for our ears. However, if it is creating difficulty please consult with a professional.

John Hurlburt was born in Winnipeg in 1944. After he wandered around for a while living in odd places, he found his way to Victoria in the early ‘70s where he got into nursing. Hurlburt is the official greeter at Oak Bay United Church and an ambassador in downtown Victoria. More importantly, Hurlburt is a friendly face wherever he goes. He makes people’s days with a smile, a friendly word and a biscuit for their dog. He and Laurie both volunteer for ALS, Hurlburt also volunteers with the Salvation Army at Christmas. What is your favourite Oak Bay destination ? Why?

Q A

My favorite include Oak Bay United Church, Oak Bay Volunteer services society, the Monterey Centre, Anderson Hill Park and the village.

Q A

What’s at the top of your bucket list? I think the West Coast of Ireland would be someplace I’d really like to see someday.

Q

What is your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement would be Aaron, our son. As soon as he came into the world, the nurse asked me if I would like hold him and have a few private moments. I took him, held him, looked into his eyes and said that my prayer for him would be to carry into life a respect for all living things. Now, 34 years later, he has grown into a very fine young man with an equally very fine wife.

Hellie McLelland Age 88 Hellie McLelland has lived in Oak Bay since 1966 and has been a part of the Monterey Centre for many years. She is in charge of the Santas Anonymous tree at the centre. She has studied psychology and social work and has always enjoyed people watching. She finds people fascinating and thinks caring should be continuous not seasonal. She enjoys writing and genealogy.

Audrey Bruce Age 88

Q

What are you reading right now? I’m not reading anything rightnow, but the book that made the biggest impression on me that I’ve read it several times now, is The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. It’s a coming of age story set against a background of magic, suspense, mystery and a circus that only appears after midnight – to be gone at dawn. What can I say? I love mystery, magic and suspense – and maybe someday, I’ll even come of age. ●
