Main stage given to backing singers SUBMITTED

Grand Forks Gazette

They are the “shoop shoops,” the “wah wahs” and other back-up vocal bits in our generational anthems. They give substance, dimension, harmonious threads and consistency to our favourite tunes. They are the foundation. Lou Reed referred to them in his song Walk on the Wild Side, “and the coloured girls go doo d’ doo etc.” When Merry Clayton hits that incredible high note as she belts out “Rape, Murder!” on the Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter, if you listen closely to the recorded version you can hear Mick Jagger say “whoo….!” in response. On Tuesday, Nov. 19 Spotlight Films will be presenting 20 Feet From Stardom, an overdue and well-deserved homage to the backup singers behind

some of the greatest legends of the 20th and 21st centuries. This film, directed by Morgan Neville (Johnny Cash’s America), features interviews with the likes of the Great Ray Charles, Sheryl Crow, David Bowie, etc. and is a glowing and fun tribute to the mostly

black women, mostly talented gospel singers, who shone just beyond the spotlight. 20 Feet From Stardom was an audience favourite at film festivals from San Francisco to London and won four awards: HBO audience award at the 2013 Provincetown International Film Festival; best documentary at the 2013 San Francisco IFF, both awards were to Neville and Tremolo Productions. Neville was awarded best documentary feature at the RiverRun IFF and best documentary at the Seattle IFF. The film was also nominated at the Sundance Festival in two categories, editing and grand jury prize for a documentary film. 20 Feet From Stardom will be shown at the GEM Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thanks to sponsors and supporters, Maureen and Marius Paquet, Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB.

In review: Telling the story of a sasquatch LORRAINE GORDON

For the Grand Forks Gazette

Kiba. The Story of a Sasquatch, is the tale of a rescued sasquatch baby raised by humans in, of all places, Grand Forks. It’s an exciting and heartwarming story with enough drama to hold the attention of young folks of all ages. Empty nesters George and Lorraine are on a berry-picking expedition up in the Cascade mountain range, in the old Phoenix mine area. Suddenly they hear screams, which they think could be a cougar. Then the sounds change to moans, and they know someone is nearby, and in pain. Upon investigation they witness a young and frail sasquatch in the throes of a difficult childbirth. Her mate stands by, but cannot help her. Through their unthreatening body language, George and Lorraine make him understand that they only want to help. Unfortunately, it is too late for the mother, who lives just long enough to briefly nurse her newborn baby. The grief-stricken father cries out, “Ki-ba,

KIBA The Story of a Sasquatch • Written by Helen Durham Kiba. The Story of a Sasquatch, is the tale of a rescued sasquatch baby raised by humans in, of all places, Grand Forks. Ki-ba,” which George and Lorraine later figure out must mean “Ki’s baby.” The male sasquatch knows he is not able to care for an infant, and in his desperation, allows Lorraine to take his son. Over George’s initial objections, the couple raises the baby sasquatch, whom they decide to name Kiba, as their own. Their last child had left home two years before, and they have plenty of love to give little Kiba.

Their friends in Grand Forks help them keep the baby a secret from the media, the government, the scientists, the hunters, and the just plain curious, until finally, the secret is out. What happens next is referred to as, “the trial of the century,” as George and Lorraine fight to keep Kiba legally. The story details Kiba’s struggles with speech and schoolwork—especially math—and describes his amazing athletic ability. Kiba grows into such a superb athlete that he ends up playing in the National Hockey League! But George and Lorraine ensure that Kiba stays in touch with his sasquatch family, and while growing up, he spends every summer on adventures with them in the wilds. I jumped at the chance to buy copies of this book for my grandchildren, who range in age from six to 14 years old, since it takes place in Grand Forks— where grandma lives—just in time for Christmas. Limited copies of the book are available from the author, at hdurham@shaw. ca.
