BETTY CLEMENT (nee Major) Dec. 4, 1922 – Oct. 27, 2013
Wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, ferocious bridge player, sharp investor, snappy dresser, loyal defender of those she loved, maker of lifelong friends and edžpert seamstress of Barbie clothes. BeƩy was both a woman of her era, the quintessenƟal edžecuƟve wife of the 50’s and 60’s and also an edžcepƟonally strong and independent woman in her own right. BeƩy was smart, wiƩy, fun and leaned more to the pracƟcal and self suĸcient than the warm and fuzzy. Born in Sudbury Ontario to William and Elsie Major, she was big sister to Bill, Jack, Colleen and Pat. Her father, a telegrapher, accepted a job in MaƩawa when BeƩy was 6 years old, where BeƩy Įnished high school then aƩended Rideau Street Convent in OƩawa. AŌer compleƟng her courses she worked at the Bank of Canada and shortly aŌer, she moved to Cooper Cliī to work at INCO. There she met the love of her life and married Gordon Clement on Nov 4, 1944. They were married 68 years when he passed away in 2012. She and Gordon moved to Toronto where he taught at the hniversity of Toronto. Gordon then joined the Alcan Aluminum Company and they moved to Arvida Yuebec. Thus began their network of friends. A connector of people and a person to whom others gravitated, BeƩy made friendships that lasted a lifeƟme. From northern Yuebec they moved with Alcan to Kingston, Montreal, Toronto and Įnally Vernon in 1973. When they celebrated their 50th anniversary many of their friends from all these ciƟes came to celebrate with them. Although BeƩy enjoyed the domesƟc arts and was a skilled seamstress, kniƩer and ͞smocker͟ (a long lost art she thought) she also had a keen Įnancial mind , ran the household Įnances and did the invesƟng. She became a highly successful real estate agent in Montreal. She conƟnued this career when they moved to Vernon along with geƫng her real estate appraisal licence. In addiƟon to their Alcan friends BeƩy had her group of bridge friends with whom she got together every week for 25 years. Her only rule was no chit chat unƟl aŌer the bidding was done and the cards played͊ She was acƟve in the Catholic Woman’s League at St. James Church as well as a member of the VJH Hospital Audžiliary and Board of the Vernon Art Gallery. BeƩy will be fondly remembered and forever missed by her children, Jane (Keith Godfrey), Lachlan (Heather Caravan) and Maureen (Richard Sherwin). BeƩy leaves Įve loving grandchildren, Heather (Andrew Gubbels), Mark, Danielle, Blaise, and Michael, and one precious great grandchild, Jack, as well as her siblings Colleen Blight (George), Pat Robbenhaar (Brant), JusƟce Jack Major (Helene) and was pre-deceased by William Major (Jean). We would like to edžpress our thanks to the wonderful and caring folks at Canterbury Court where BeƩy leaves many friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church Friday Nov. 8th at 1pm A CelebraƟon of Life will be held at Canterbury Court, 3011 Gateby Place on Nov. 9th at 2pm. zou are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s on-line obituary Λ www.MyAlternaƟves.ca .
