Reaching Beyond our Borders

Companions in Compassion When the hearts of four women, from four different backgrounds, come together to support a common cause the result is a bond that cannot be broken and a legacy of friendship that truly inspires. When they first met Betsy Bodor, Elly Hageman, Wendy Koeppen and Linda Kozina recognized in one another fellow soul travelers and in 1992 they embarked on a journey together. They were participants in Crossroads Hospice Society’s first visiting volunteer training course conducted by one of Crossroads first employees, Pete Pictured l-r: Elly Hageman, Betsy Bodor, Wendy Koeppen O’Reilly. and Linda Kozina have spent the better part of 25 years The women soon serving and helping others to put life into their days. became affectionately known as “Pete’s Angels and their unwavering commitment to Crossroads has brought compassionate care to hundreds of people throughout our community. Elly Hageman became a spiritual care volunteer to those facing life’s final journey and was inspired to companion those in the community and in Crossroads Inlet Centre Hospice. “I have learned that when a person is in pain that person is in touch with his core being. The bare person is there. When you are there for that person, amazing things can happen, says Elly. Betsy Bodor came to Crossroads at the mention of hospice from a friend and quickly found an opportunity that filled a void in her life. “As a volunteer, when I see what happens at Crossroads, it allows me to be able to be more caring to others. To be allowed in the patient’s space and to share this time with their loved ones is such an honour. Now I bring that passion to all the volunteer roles I play at Crossroads, says Betsy. After facing the sudden death of both parents and a cancer scare, Wendy Koeppen read an ad for the hospice course in a local newspaper and was inspired to help. “My many experiences over the years have enriched my life and given me the opportunity to meet many wonderful people, patients and families, staff and fellow volunteers. Throughout the years I have enjoyed the friendship of Linda, Elly, and Betsy and how we have grown together in our love, knowledge and passion for Crossroads, says Wendy. Linda Kozina faced a crisis when she was unable to find the words and actions to support a co-worker who was dying of cancer. “After taking that first course together, we did not look back, but brought our talents and new found knowledge back to our work, even if, at first, we did not think it had any relevance. Perhaps that is what binds us together, this avenue of service and this shared vision of the mission of hospice work, says Linda. All of Pete’s Angels would go on to deepen their relationship and support Crossroads in variety of ways. Elly remains in her role as spiritual care volunteer. Betsy is now a thrift store volunteer and helps with fundraising. Wendy splits her time between patients, serving lunch at the hospice and helping with special assignments. Linda became Crossroads first Executive Director, then Hospice Manager and founder of Crossroads Hospice Coffeehouse only to return as a volunteer after her retirement. Crossroads Hospice Society is grateful for the foundation of care that our early volunteers have brought to our society. Many hands, hearts and minds are responsible for our continued success and we hope in the next 25 years to tell more stories and build even greater relationships.

ing,â€? reports Dawn McDonald, STC Committee Chair. The second week of the trip involved working with the Korle-Bu Palliative Care Team doing clinical consultations in the hospital, clinic, and community. As a result, some significant differences were made in pain relief and bereavement support for several patients and families. “Even in a few days, we were able to make a significant difference to patients and their families with pain relief and bereavement care. A number of meetings were also held with senior health care administrators, discussing strategies to develop palliative care capacity and programmes,â€? says McDonald. In the short time the Share the Care project has been in existence it is clear that there have been many positive developments in the palliative care field in Ghana, as well as, the KBPCT has formed and is providing palliative care in a variety of settings to ever increasing demands. There is a growing commitment to, and acceptance of, the importance of palliative care in many forms amongst health care administrators and within the government. With such positive indicators the STC committee is confident that by continuing to collaborate with our Ghanaian colleagues Crossroads can help develop palliative care capacity through advocacy, education, and clinical Creating Global Connections at Korle-Bu Hospital Accra, Ghana support.
