Teach kids ABCs and how to call 911

With the start of school, the BC Ambulance Service is reminding parents and caregivers that teaching children to call 911 and to know their home address is one of the most important things you can do to help keep themselves and others safe. “Even very young

NEWS children can learn to call 911,” said Dr. Michal Fedeles, manager of learning design for BCAS. “It’s a good idea to talk to your children about calling 911 once a year. Fall is a good time because school starts and household routines change,” Fedeles said.

Driver charged after police chase Jennifer Smith STAFF REPORTER

A 42-year-old West Kelowna woman is facing a string of charges after police tried to stop her vehicle Sunday afternoon and wound up in a wild chase. The incident started when a member of the West Kelowna RCMP noticed a white Ford Expedition leaving a known drug house shortly after 3 p.m., followed the SUV and tried to pull the vehicle over in the

2400-block of Dobbin Road. The vehicle pulled into a nearby car wash and the female driver jumped out. She was directed to return to her vehicle, but when she did, she drove away. She left the area, driving at a slow speed toward Brown Road with police in pursuit. Once on Brown, an officer pulled up beside her and indicated for her to pull over. She responded by driving her vehicle into the front end of the

unmarked police car and from there, the chase kicked into high gear. The driver took off heading southbound on Highway 97, say police, speeding into the Glenrosa neighbourhood and forcing police to call off the pursuit in order to keep the public safe. She abandoned the SUV in the 3400-block of Laird Court, but tips from the public poured in as she was spotted getting onto a city bus. Officers closed in and arrested her on the bus,

but one officer sustained minor injuries in the process. Cindy Elizabeth Bevan was in court Monday and was granted bail; it’s not known whether she was able to make the $500 payment needed for her release. Bevan is facing charges of assaulting a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving, mischief and resisting or obstructing a police officer. jsmith@kelownacapnews.com

However, later in his cross examination, he agreed he lied about a phone exchange Irving purportedly had with a man named Joey the day she disappeared. Macculloch testified it sounded like the man was yelling at Irving, apparently because she couldn’t fulfill the drug order she was working on. But he didn’t tell police about the man yelling in his initial interview. Macculloch believed the man on the phone was not only someone Irving was doing a drug deal with, but also dating. Irving’s brother was also questioned about when she told him about the deal and was asked whether she told him

about the arrangement as she put on her makeup in the hotel room they shared on the morning of April 5, 2010. Macculloch said he was told “several times,” about the deal, but couldn’t say if she told him about it when she was putting on her makeup, so he told the court information in his police statement about the conversation was a “lie.” Irving was last seen alive April 6, 2010 and her Explorer was located the next day off Philpott Road. Nearly three weeks later, her body was found off McCulloch Forest Service Road. Joelon Verma is currently on trial, charged with first degree murder in her death.
