sneakers get around, thanks to the run inn If your runners are looking worn and frayed, now is a good time to think about a new pair. The Run Inn in Tsawwassen is holding its annual Stinky Sneaker Sale, during which the store collects old athletic shoes to donate to people in need. In return, customers get a discount when they purchase a new pair. This is the sale’s 10th year in Tsawwassen, and 20th at The Run Inn’s Kerrisdale store. Owner Kevin Ridley says he typically ends up with 15 to 20 large boxes of men’s, women’s and children’s runners — hundreds of shoes — by the sale’s end on Sept. 30. “We get a really good response,” he said. “A lot of people like that they can recycle their old shoes rather than have them end up in the landfill.” The sneakers are mostly donated to a charitable organization that takes them to Ghana in Africa. Other boxes are given to St. James Community Services Society in downtown Vancouver. The Run Inn staff are no strangers to community involvement. At the end of the month (Sept. 26) they are hosting a Boundary Bay Cross Country Run for local elementary school children.

Last year Ridley said about 1,300 kids from 12 schools took part in the run, and he hopes to see it continue to grow. Students from schools that aren’t participating can sign up as individuals through the store. Funds raised go to the Hannah’s Heroes Foundation, which supports pediatric brain cancer research in honour of a Tsawwassen girl who was diagnosed with two brain tumors and passed away. In past years The Run Inn has also sponsored other local and regional events, from the annual Jog for a Jug (also for Hannah’s Heroes) and Run Inn the Woods (for the BC Cancer Foundation), to the Surrey International World Music Marathon and Delta Triathlon. When asked why get involved Ridley said, “I think a lot of it’s just kind of been my philosophy of trying to give back and be involved in the community. Hopefully that encourages people to stay local and shop local, and support local businesses.”
